Carving may help you keep some speed while going, but things that you could get to maintain speed is maybe replacing your bearings and tires for ones that roll easier, faster, and for longer. For bearings I think these will do you some good https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QY4YB8F/ref=emc_b_5_mob_t And for wheels my personal favorites are 78a slimeballs. They've always been real good at letting me just roll for a while whether I'm on pavement or sidewalk
does the gym there not have lockers you can lock your board up in? if not, I guess something like this could work: https://www.amazon.com/SKATE-Snatch-Compact-Skateboard-Lock/dp/B0856TKTV6
Just that and a simple cable lock to prevent someone from just picking it up and dashing. obviously won't stop someone with bolt cutters, but as long as your locking it up inside and not out on the street I don't picture someone walking around inside a gym with boltcutters.
You might want to go with a drop down longboard like a Landyachtz Evo or one from skateshred if your just mellow cruising. If you want a cruiser with a kicktail though I just recently bought a 10x33 old school double kick for $40 on amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003FVFVUU?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
I got it to use for a surfskate. It feels solid so far. The concave is nice. Im a size 12 shoe and I think if I were size 16 I would have to have something 10" or wider.
For trucks I recommend not going too cheap, get a good brand like Indy, Thunder, Bear, Paris, Caliber, Ace. Size will depend on your board size and wheel width/offset. Youre probably going to want harder bushings (probably 95a or harder), I usually get venom bushings or whatever brand of truck theyre for (ie indy bushings for indy trucks).
Bearings you dont really have to worry about too much, most are pretty similar speed and strength wise. Built in spacers are a really nice feature to look for though. Zealous are only $16, have built in spacers, and are known for being durable, longboarders swear by them. But they do take some miles to break them in and get max speed. Bronson g3s and Bones big balls are the fastest out of the box.
For wheels, if youre not doing tricks, go big, 70mm or more. Just make sure you have enough risers to prevent wheelbite. Also factors in preventing wheelbite are the concave of the deck, wheel flares and/or wheel wells (which can be sanded out yourself), as well as the truck height.
If you're using spikes, then try some old yoga mat from a thrift store on as grip.
Also if the Zealous start getting dry from water washout, try packing them with some of this: https://www.amazon.com/Schaeffer-Manufacturing-02742-029S-Synthetic-Grease/dp/B00JF2LBQ6
My favorite waterproof grease.
Zealous is great for the price. If you can find them, go with them.
Here are a few online sites for Canada that have them:

This is the super basic one I use. Haven't had a bad spill yet to have any reports tho.

This is the one I’m looking at now, in the US. I know Amazon isn’t the best but from the reviews and specs I’m thinking it shouldn’t be too bad on a tight budget right?
