I used Edinburgh Miniature Companies' conversion torsos and a sword I designed in TinkerCAD and printed! I went for a more "subtle" daemon prince.
Looks great! I think the big eye is one of its best features, so you could paint a pupil to make it look more intimidating. Otherwise you could give it a more glassy look like this: https://tinyurl.com/ycxv965s
Other than that, a bit of edge highlighting on the carapace, carapace dents/holes, and flesh would be nice. Same for the gold metal, which could get some leadbelcher on the edges. Awesome stuff. Papa bless.
Just a spare fishing tackle box! That one is a “3600” size, which is about 10.8x7.25x1.65. I can fit about 18 regular citadel pots in one as well as all my paint brushes. However contrast and shades are too tall for a standard fishing box, so I have another “3600 DEEP” tacklebox that holds all my taller pots.
If I were to buy one specifically for storing paints I’d get a 3700 size which would probably hold around 36-40 paints, but these were just some of my old ones in my closet that were no longer fit for tournament duty. You can probably find these things for between $4 and $8 at your local outdoor outfitters, especially in October (when everyone starts putting their fishing gear away for the winter).

Fishing stuff is way overpriced on Amazon right now because COVID is causing an outrageous fishing explosion, but your local Dicks / Cabelas whatever should have some nice cheap crappy ones for like $5.
roughly the same size as a regular demon prince is good

Pretty much in the same boat as you, I got into 40k about 4 months ago and started with death guard. So this more of a "noob to noob" advice, and any vets reading can feel free to correct me.
I'd recommend buying the First Strike boxset https://www.amazon.com/Warhammer-40-000-First-Strike/dp/B073VQZN5C
It's extremely affordable in terms of bang for your buck. You get 3 Plague Marines and 6 Poxwalkers, as well as 6 Space Marines so you have enough units to play small skirmish matches to teach yourself the rules. It even comes with a bunch of die, a clear ruler for measuring distances, and a playing mat along with a box you can use as cover on the battlefield.
From there you can branch out and buy whatever units you. I found this guide on this subreddit (I think it used to be stickied) that gives you a rundown of what units are good and what units are worthless https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x3I3a2g5u4XHOaXHTqu0MborGYGY-H2Eg9inF4Nu4G8/edit#heading=h.u8tydgxkn3br
If you want cheap cannon fodder, Poxwalkers are great, but so are Chaos Cultists. Cultists are dirt cheap and it's fun to experiment with color schemes to make their outfits Nurgle-themed.
Finally, if you're an artistic type and feel comfortable mixing paints to get the right color you want, you could probably save money by avoiding the Games Workshop Citadel brand paints.
If not, the two biggest Citadel colors for Death Guard, are Death Guard Green (Duh) and Balthasar Gold for armor trim. I douse my minis in Agrax Earthshade after painting them and they come out looking great.
Once you get comfortable painting your plague bois, you can throw in Ryza Rust to make metals look filthy and rusted, Nihilakh Oxide to accent your rusted armor and weapons with an oxidized look, and you can use Nurgle Rot to give open wounds a nice goopy wet rotting effect.
Hope you enjoy the new hobby! It's a great way to kill time in quarantine.
its on amazon rn, get it while you can! (note I live in the Mountainous region of the USA, so that might make a difference) Amazon Link
Amazon have it in stock if you need it quick.

Definitely try not to fight the tools you're using. To that end, grab yourself some cheaper paper (Canson XL--blue cover) for experimenting on, but also pick up and primarily use Arches cotton-pulp paper. It will be wonderful to not have paper that will tear or buckle when you really start layering.
The same idea for paints. I enjoy windsor and newton cotman series paints (I can try a fair few of them), but also pick up some artist-grade daniel smith colors to see the pigment difference.
With some good materials, all you need is time and practice and a goal for what you'd like to paint subject-wise. Watercolors are NOT layerable in the same way as the acrylics we use in our model painting. You typically go light to dark and there isn't a way to go back to a lighter value with watercolors alone
Thanks again mate. Don't think imma get GW air paints. I hate working with paint pots and putting airbrush paint in a pot is litterly a crime. If I get an airbrush I'll just see if thinning down my already owned paints is fine if not the AP airbrush line does look pretty nice.
Also, I watched a few youtube videos and the Neo for Iwata airbrush is good for beginners. Also heard its nearly as good as the Iwata Eclipse but idk. Do you think this would be a good purchase?
Cool, what Master airbrush did you get? Found this one on amazon for $40. Getting it would save be $20 by getting it instead of an Iwata Neo... Would you say its worth it for only $20, or screw it get the Neo?
It’s just the omnibus I’ve read:
https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/1844164160/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_W4SHTEHHQW2XMZ1B9RWQ
There are a few more set after this that came out later, but I haven’t read them. The omnibus works well enough on its own as the ending is pretty good.
I actually use silica beads from those little desiccant packets you can find in shoes and other goods that need to stay dry during shippping.
You can get more than you'll ever need from Amazon.
To answer your question, you've a couple options. First, you COULD use clear coat nail varnish in a pinch. I've done this and it gives a decent gloss effect; however, it has a solvent in it and once it's on any movement will strip paint from the model. You're far better off buying a dedicated product like Vallejo's gloss varnish. I've got some recently any the stuff is ace. There's also a satin version too for a mild sheen. Best of luck, the model looks superb!

This one! I love this guy, his work is amazing!
These strings made with UHU glue and then painted with GW blood for the blood god

Hey all, I participated in a miniature painting competition. This is my first entry ever, and took me a great deal of work. I'd love it if you could have a look at the competition. And if you think mine is the best, I'd appreciate the vote :). My entry is 'PP11', for the tabletop category. Help me infect this competition with rot and disease. (C&C is also very welcome!).

I use 2mm thickness magnets from sizes ranging from 6mm diameter to 10mm. Depending on the size of the model I use 1 (poxwalkers), 3 (terminators), or a bunch if its a daemon engine.
I mold the magnets to the bottom of the base with magic sculpt. Its very permanent when you do this though so glue might be easier.
I use these for my flies. Back in 5th ed the dollar stores by me had them by the bagful and I was chasing down as many bags as I could grab
Sure! I got an old water filter from a water jug like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MZZI7OI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_jwbrFbMWVVCE8 Cut it open and there is a load of tiny beads inside. Bit of PVA glue and sprinkle on top. Or you can mix them with the PVA to make big clumps
Don't forget to get the newest technical paint from GW. It'll take anybody's DG to the next level.
Edit: On a more serious note, that looks incredible. You've got the perfectly tasteful amount of nihilakh oxide, rust, and nurgle's rot. Absolutely disgusting.
Nice.
If you like Plague Marines, I'd suggest 2 small additions.
2x of the Easy-to-Build Plague Marine Packs. https://www.amazon.com/Games-Workshop-Easy-Build-Marines/dp/B073VS7BQ2/
Blightlaucher MArines and Champions with Plasma guns are nice.
Agrax does wonders to the bronze trim.
Welcome to the hobby, nice first mini! Watch your edges -- if you need some finer paintbrushes I recommend this kit.
> use a wet pallet I made myself but it feels like the paints keep drying up after a couple of minutes
What wet pallet are you using? Are you pretreating the paper? My better half and I use the Sta-wet and have not had the issues you describe. You do need to "activate" the pallet paper the first time you use a sheet.
https://www.amazon.com/Sta-Wet-Palette-Keeps-Paints-Airtight/dp/B000C18GTE
Tried the "self made" parchment paper and paper towels/sponges in a tupperware bin... that didn't work for us.
> and I haven't really experienced that long waiting time on the paint to dry.
Interesting, it can take a good hour or so for wash to fully dry. A good 20-30 minutes for a base coat. Are you not waiting that long? And if not .. are you not getting streaks or paint pull up?
