I've had the hackzall too. I actually ended up liking just a regular pvc saw like this better. When new they only take 3 swipes to get through 1". Just my opinion though.
Never wore a mask. You'll get used to the smell and after a while you won't notice it. As strong as it smells, don't worry about it being harmful. I practically huffed the stuff for 10 years and had no side effects (that I know of).
Unless you like ripping glue off your hands, try these gloves. They're lightweight and will last you weeks if you're just installing CPVC.

Design of Special Hazard and Fire Alarm Systems was a textbook I used in the special hazards course at school. It covers the more specialized suppression systems, and largely leaves water based ones to other books. The author, Gagnon, was a guest professor and is extremely knowledgeable.
