As for the images, I mainly used Wikipedia for real-life reproductions of the species. If I couldn’t find it on Wikipedia, I searched other sites like Deviantart and Artstation.
Once I had the image I would remove the background - I used this website, as I don’t own any software myself.

Something like this in conjunction with finer tools (dental wax-carving kits are a good option) would be a good place to start, depending on the material you would like to work with!
