This is the Bible for many handicappers of my generation, written by a guy who Andy Beyer learned a thing or two from. It provides a good treatment of pretty much all of the basic Handicapping Fundamentals: https://www.amazon.com/Betting-Thoroughbreds-21st-Century-Professionals/dp/1932910700/ref=sr_1_4?crid=W1I0YEB6IFH3&dchild=1&keywords=betting+thoroughbreds&qid=1621502911&sprefix=betting+thor%2Cdigital-text%2C169&sr=8-4
If you are interested in a long statistical analysis of many of the most common "Angles" or myths among horseplayers, then "The Skeptical Handicapper" by Barry Meadow is highly worth reading, although somewhat turgid.

The best book on the topic IMO, written by a member of a betting syndicate in Hong Kong. It is translated to English so some sections are a little hard to read but you're still able to understand it all.
Out of print so you had better start checking your favourite second-hand sources: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Racing-Tribe-Portrait-British-Subculture/dp/1138538094/ref=sr\_1\_1?crid=2MG3261793F6W&keywords=kate+fox+racing+tribe&qid=1664133479&sprefix=kate+fox+racing+tribe%2Caps%2C102&sr=8-1
Nope. With most you just sign up, download their program, log in and select where you want your internet to come from!
Check out a /r/VPN. They are really easy and wonderful things. I use AirVPN, PIA is another I have used. There are lots.
100% agree with your points.
One of the best poker player's to every live - Stuey Ungar - won millions upon million playing poker and other card games, but would always go to the track and lose everything he won. Sure, he won 900k in a pick 6 from Santa Anita once, but he then would go on to lose it betting on horses. The book about him is fantastic and I urge anyone that gets into gambling to read the book...

If you can find in a library: https://www.amazon.com/Betting-Thoroughbreds-Professionals-Horseplayer-Reference/dp/0452270421/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1477963330&sr=8-2&keywords=betting+thoroughbreds
stick with win/place/show and exacta betting (exacta is picking the 1st place and 2nd place horse in a single race).
There's going to be some really great races this weekend. Have fun. Play in moderation.
I was where you are about a year ago. I ended up finding Handicapping 101 by Brad Free and really enjoyed it. (http://www.amazon.com/Handicapping-101-Horse-Racing-Primer/dp/1932910808)
I also am currently reading The Winning Horseplayer by Andrew Beyer (http://www.amazon.com/The-Winning-Horseplayer-Andrew-Beyer/dp/0395701317)
Both have significantly helped me read the DRF and I have learned plenty about class, pace, and speed.
