I too was extremely anemic when I had my surgery. I started talking Blood Builder and my iron levels went up. That stuff is easy on the stomach and didn’t cause any constipation. It helped a lot with the fatigue and breathlessness I had going on.

Unfortunately, any surgery you want that will inhibit your ability to have babies will probably be denied. I'm in my mid-30's, had cervical cancer, and even then I wasn't offered a hysterectomy. I was offered a surgery that would require tons of biopsies for years, but I could still have babies.
I told them I had no interest in having babies or biopsies, and I needed another option. They then told me I could get a hysterectomy, but kept hammering home the fact that I could never have kids. I pretty much had to convince every doctor I saw that I didn't want kids and it was okay. And I'm not a perfectly healthy 21 year old.
It fucking sucks and isn't fair. But a hysterectomy is also a very serious surgery with a long recovery time and the potential for issues down the line. You'd probably have an easier time asking for tubal ligation, which is also permanent but less invasive.
Either way...you'll have a tough time convincing your doctors that you should get one until you're much older unfortunately.
It goes away. My pain day 1 was so high it caused my blood pressure to go up. Mine was due to the catheter and the doctors gave me these ice pack pads that were a huge relief. These: ICEWRAPS Instant Perineal Cold Pack - 2 in 1 Absorbent Maxi Pad and Instant Cold Pack - 12 Count Single Use Postpartum Ice Cold Compress for After Birth https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HSRM1H7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_BG7M7V8TGHXGRXKEZ0DH?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Nearly 2 weeks post op! You're off to a good start planning. Good luck!
Recommended purchases: Saltines Prune juice in cans Sport water bottle (i use my bike bottle its so helpful) Lots of high protein snacks Heat pads A husband pillow from amazon
Body pillow Ice packs - lots of them Grabber Awesome bath robe
Ahead of time I made a bunch of smoothies with high protein powder and froze them in little baggies. Has been such a great treat in those moments when I want ice cream. I gave up dairy and other inflammatory foods pre-op and am maintaining to help with recovery.
Get ready to rock dresses!!
If you think you'll be ordering delivery, I recommend putting a table outside your door. I've received a few deliveries and they often put it on the floor of the porch which obviously I cannot pick up.
Have you checked out the hystersisters website? Good resource. At the risk of prying, have you received a 2nd opinion? I had fibroids and similar family history but I have no desire to have kids. You said you wanted that option so just want to make sure you're getting lots of outside support.
For underwear, I purchased some high waisted ones based on other people recommending them, but I found that I preferred things that fit loosely and ride low post op. I wore the high waisted undies one day, but they made me more uncomfortable and I did not use them again. These are the ones I purchased fwiw.
https://www.amazon.com/cauniss-Recovery-Postpartum-Stretchy-Underwear/dp/B07F6QXX4W
I was prescribed opioids but did not use them. I used a regimen of 800mg ibuprofen + 500mg tylenol every ~8 hours and did fine with that.
My partner also works from home. We were unsure about that as well, but he ended up not needing to take any time off. My surgery was on a friday so I had time to recover a little over the weekend. I needed him to cook meals for the first week but I was able to get up and get around on my own from day 1. No kids here, but we do have a rambunctious 80 lb dog. We let him stay with friends for a week to avoid any problems and that was a good idea. I definitely was not able to deal with his shenanigans for the first few days.
Good luck!
Thanks! I'd definitely recommend the 3 panel, maybe even the 2 panel. Measure your midsection, like top of hip bones to bottom of ribcage. All you're looking to do is hold a jiggly belly in place, because at first you're going to feel a bit like a water snake.
Assuming she will be at a desk -
Perineal cold packs from Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Medline-MDS138055-Standard-Perineal-Packs/dp/B000K6TF1Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=perineal+ice+packs+for+postpartum&qid=1582413091&sprefix=perenial&sr=8-3
Heating pad.
Things she can keep at her desk to naturally boost energy: CBD energy capsules or gummies, Yogi Energy Tea, vitamin B-12.
LuxClub. I actually had to check on groupon to find out the brand and they're still there. Lol
6 Piece Bamboo Sheet Set w/ 18 Inch Deep Pocket by LuxClub - 10 Colors - Group 1
I've had to get those old lady mattress sheet suspenders to keep the sheets on. There very soft and like to pop off of the mattress.
Something like that? Search hospital blanket on Amazon. Or just ask the hospital if you can buy one off of them. They must have a vendor they purchase through.
For me the things I bought/own that were priceless were:
1 - these ice pack pads: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HSRM1H7?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
These helped with vaginal pain
2 - a squatty potty and also colace abs gasX if I’m being real
For whatever reason, bowel movements felt like they were tearing me in half. These helped
3 - 3 Undresses: https://www.theundress.com/
I already had 2 of these and ordered 2 more just before surgery. They ended up being perfect because I could walk around the block and not get weird looks from the neighbors and still feel comfy.
Btw - I am 1.5 weeks post surgery and haven’t been able to comfortably wear pants, not even loose pants yet.
4 - a grabber.
Bending over is the worst. Just the worst. Sitting is bad, but bending is awful in a lot of ways.
That was it. I bought a body pillow, didn’t need it
I bought books and a video game to keep me occupied. Slept for a week and went back to work part time in week 2
I have extra slippers a fancy easy thermometer, bandaids for my sutures. They’re all still in the box.
I would Eve say the grabber isn’t a necessity if you’re okay with some stuff just being on the floor until someone can help. I dropped shampoo and that was the only thing I really needed it for.
Good luck! You’re going to love being on the other side
The tailbone pillow wasn't for surgery soreness, it's for the soreness of sitting in bed. This is the one I have. I have no padding on my butt, so sitting in bed really hurts my tailbone.
The kind I got also doubles as just a nice supportive pillow, so it can also be used on your back or whatever. I suggest it!
Good luck! You'll do great!
This is the one I have. I love it. I had to buy a second one because my husband kept stealing it.
This is Amazon Canada, but it's the pillow I have.
This is the one I have. The recommendation is generally a blanket that is 10% of your body weight. I fall between 12 and 15lbs but prefer heavier so I have the 15. I'd probably love the 18 but its hard enough to make the bed with the 15 so I haven't upgraded!
Somehow or another one of my favorite bits of hitting my mid-40s was acceptance that anything I could do to help with my borked sleep cycle was going ot be just fine and I don't much care what anyone else thinks of it. Started with a stuffed animal. I discovered I have a tactile thing that helps me to relax and a soft squishy to hold helps. Then I realized I love sleeping in winter when I can snuggle under a pile of blankets and quilt but had more trouble in summer when it is too damned hot for all that so I invested in my first weighted blanket. That one didn't have the bamboo cooling fabric so, while it was great in winter, I was getting overheated in summer still but slept worse without it. Amazon to the rescue! Hubs hates having separate bedding but understands that a well rested wife is beneficial all around so he doesn't die on that hill. In fact he so doesn't die on that hill that when we did a long weekend road trip recently he made sure I brought bought the stuffie and the weighted blanket along! He's a good egg...
I went with these and I'm really happy with them:

I am so sorry you are going through pain and disappointment. It’s so sad to say goodbye to that dream. I know there aren’t really words to comfort you, but I feel empathy for what you’re experiencing. One of my dearest friends wrote a book on this: The Next Happy. It’s wise and affirming. https://www.amazon.com/Next-Happy-Life-Planned-Forward/dp/1616495723/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=the+next+happy+book&qid=1611968986&sprefix=the+next+happ&sr=8-3
I wish you peace in your journey, and a relief from the pain after your surgery.
I recommend this nightgown from Amazon. I lived in these for the first 2 weeks. I only bought one but then went back on Amazon and got a few more once I realized how great they were. The nice thing is they make a good beach/pool dress as well. Good luck!!
Ekouaer Sleep Shirts for Women... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XPTMM6L?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Get yourself a small "belly pillow." I got this a week or so ago and wish I'd gotten it sooner. Try to take a lighter load if they'll let you.
I wish I had better advice.
I was also on Lupron before my surgery. Unfortunately, that alone wasn’t enough to stop my bleeding. Lupron plus 10mg of Aygestin was the magical combination for me. I bought these on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072F3N42R/), and they made me feel more confident about preventing leaks. I would wear my overnight pad + regular underwear before putting these on. I also had problems with large clots. Good luck!!
As I didn’t wanna go to clothing stores/thrift shops as much as possible postop, I did online shopping and it was trickier than I initially thought. I’m petite and have a plus-sized waist but the rest of my legs was either medium or large depending on the company. Hoodies were also a weird fit, surprisingly enough: my brother’s medium/large hoodies didn’t pinch my abdomen as much as my medium/large hoodies.
I’ve had more success in terms of fit with leggings at Old Navy compared to Amazon. The Old Navy high-waisted leggings kept my waist tucked in but didn't press uncomfortably against it. Old Navy has a lot of online sales and there’s cute summer dresses on clearance too. I purchased a couple of "regular" jeans and jeggings from Old Navy which are being delivered; if those "regular" but stretchy jeans don't work, I’ll try maternity jeans/pants next.
The two joggers I purchased on Amazon are comically huge, but if you’re over 5’4” there may be non-crop leggings that work there for you. I've had success with No Nonsense cotton/poly tights when I wanted a less spandex-y and more loungey option but still fit my waist and didn't look too huge on my legs.
Give it time! Things need to heal. Also, what used to be "sure fire" may no longer be a guarantee. It may be time to explore a little and see what the new lay-of-the-land is (sorry, that pun was irresistible).
Also: UTIs disappeared for me completely as long as I take two tablets of D-Mannose every night. Haven't had one in 6 years and can cuddle after sex.
You might also want to look into a pelvic floor physical therapist. I found it really helpful for learning not just how to feel better during sex, but also how to better empty my bladder. Very good stuff.
I can't find one just like mine, but this one seems the most like mine, which I woke up already wearing, in recovery. It does help quite a bit with feeling secure. I wore mine nearly daily till 2 weeks or so, and then whenever I drove or went for long walks for another few weeks.
I bought two pairs of these and love them:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094JD5CL1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They're loose, and high waisted enough to go all the way up over my incisions (laproscopic ones). I am short so length isn't an issue but it could be for some people. I tried to wear regular leggings today but I still have a huge bruise (2.5 weeks post op) right below my belly button and the compression from the leggings made it sore so I went back to my more comfy pants.
The binder was super useful for me. I ended up wearing it when I went back to work too. I wore it until I felt like I could rebuild my stomach muscles without everything else being in pain.

pj yoga pants](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09XHJJTCK?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share])
I got those pants.
Anything high waisted was great. Those pants I pulled the top section up and fully covered everything. It felt more secure and comfortable but I did get blood on them and they would sometimes stick to the incisions. High waisted super soft leggings. Anything that hugged my stomach and kind of .. kept everything in place.
Also wore my husband's tshirts.or just my tank tops if it was warm in the house.
I also bought a binder and that helped feel much more comfortable. If I did it again I wouldn't get the longest binder. I'm very long waisted so I got a 12 inch long binder and it was just so long that when I went to the bathroom I had trouble getting pants off and bending.
Hi! I’m feeling ok. I had a laparoscopic surgery with four small cuts, cervix and tubes removed. The fibroid was pressing my bladder and I felt bladder spasms for about two days after. The first two days I HAD to alternate Motrin two hours after Oxycodone. I think my situation was quite extreme however so take that for just my experience. Now not even a week later I’m walking around just fine. I bought the binder off Amazon I don’t know if I can share link but if it doesn’t show up PM me. I just picked one, ORTONYX Breathable 9.5" Abdominal... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09NHVHBDG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
It’s good to prepare. I don’t watch TV and I wish I had planned for that because I’m not that fatigued. I got a nice big tray table for jewelry making in the bed and FOUR extra Pillows to my pillow fortress. You need lots. One to cover belly if you have animals because they won’t leave you alone afterwards.
It’ll all be good! Sending lots of love and healing your way. :)
Just hang in there!! I’m 3dpo and it’s crazy to me that I went in to surgery on Tuesday in pain, and came out with immediate relief/no pain. And minimal blood (just like…drops…) on my panty liner.
Buy these undies of you don’t have something similar:
Amazon Essentials womens All Way... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TLZP38F?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
They’re super stretchy, comfy, and come high enough to not irritate the lap incisions.
Before surgery I put a basket on my nightstand with cough drops, medicine, the remotes I constantly lose. I also bought one of those cord organizer things so that I wouldn’t have to reach for my charging cable every time it falls to the floor. Linked at bottom of post.
I put fresh sheets on the bed before I left. I also arranged the pillows how I would want them.
Fill any prescriptions that are coming up soon if you take medicine. Also about medicine…I brought Tylenol and Benadryl from home because they take forever to get it to you sometimes.
My must haves were:
*Ensure Pre-Surgery drink. My Dr. order it for me but alot of people here have done it and said recovery was super easy. Order on Amazon if your Dr. doesn’t give it to you.
*Squatty Potty
*AZO because it will burn when you pee for a few days after the catheter comes out.
*Gas X…get the Walmart brand. Much cheaper.
*Colace stool softeners…take 2 as soon as they give you something to drink
*Cough drops. Your throat will likely hurt from intubation.
*heating pad
*wedge for under my knees when laying in bed
That was really all I needed. I’m glad I didn’t buy everything on my wish list.
Not exactly your situation but hopefully it's helpful. I took a 2 week roadtrip 4 weeks PO. My biggest advice is to get a seatbelt pillow to help protect your incisions from the belt irritating them. I got one like this and it was a life saver. https://www.amazon.com/BNRendles-Hysterectomy-Abdominal-Protectors-C-Section/dp/B097ZD57YG/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=VIFWUE2H0Y5I&keywords=hysterectomy+pillow&qid=1667230397&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI2LjE1IiwicXNhIjoiNS45MyIsInFzcCI6IjUuNDcifQ%3D%3D&...
Also, make sure to stop every couple of hours to get a short walk in to help with gas pain and reduce the risk of blood clots forming (good tip for anyone really).
Another thing to think about is wiping your behind. I never thought this might be an issue, but once I actually had my first BM after my surgery, it was difficult to reach around to wipe lol The stretching from the reach-around was a bit uncomfortable if not a bit painful.
If you have a bidet, this would help tremendously. A postpartum bottle/portable bidet would work too. I think you can get those in the pharmacy area, although I've never been able to find them here. Something like this PostPartum Care Bottle
I wasn't able to get the bottle like this so I had to tough it out and just wipe gingerly and use butt wipes.

That’s it! Congrats on getting approved! Cord Organizer
I got this one off Amazon and it's okay overall. I wore it mostly so I wouldn't bend over the wrong way, but when I sat down in it, the top would hit my ribcage and it was annoying. Plus after like 10 days of use the velcro is not as sticky and the edges are fraying, so I'm sending it back. It was a good option for me between day 3 and day 11 or 12. I'd say buy one you can return (actually buy two sizes to try on) and then you'll have it if you want it. Currently (16 DPO Robotic) I'm just wearing a random shapewear tank from TJMaxx to keep everything contained and so I won't scratch at my itchy incisions
I posted the link to the one I got. Just make sure you go by the measurements to make sure you get the right size. I got the three panel one. It really does help a lot. Here is the link. NYOrtho Abdominal Binder Lower... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DLKZYW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I'm in the hospital right now. And agree with a lot of what's already written here. But, #1, get yourself a small pillow. You will feel very vulnerable after your surgery and can use the pillow as a protective shield of sorts. I have had it on me since I woke up!

A stuffed animal - I know this may seem juvenile, but at night when you're all alone & in pain, sleeping in a hospital with everyone poking around your privates, your stuffed animal understands! My girls bought me a little stuffed hedgehog I've named Henry & he's been the absolute best!.
A friend, partner or spouse --- You will need emotional support. Ask a friend to take off & stay with you. Insist your partner stay (if their job allows it). It's an emotionally draining procedure to have an organ removed - especially a life giving organ that only women have. Or ask the nurses to sit & hold your hand. It's okay to not be OK. I was brave until I wasn't. Most people are very kind & will help you if you ask... You are in good hands...
Ask for a sleep aid if you can't sleep.
Good luck! I'm rooting for you!!!!
Oh oof, yeah. Tho, I just googled "stainless steel pet feeder" and got this here (assuming just the eating part needs to be steel). I saw Chewy's got a stainless steel gravity water bowl, too.
This bed rail has been a life saver!
I bought a hysterectomy coloring book. It's been very therapeutic going through and coloring the pages during my recovery. I worry that one day I'll meet someone that makes me actually want to have babies but I'll cross that bridge if I come to it. I'm just happy to have gotten rid of the cancer and feeling so much better than before.
I just got this one from Amazon. My surgery is 9/9 so haven’t used it yet but didn’t see terrible when I tried it on. Was recommended by someone else in this sub.
Postpartum Belly Band,C Section... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I18CKZ0?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I think the pads you are describing are similar to the Always ultra thin ones I liked before the bleeding got really bad for me.
https://www.amazon.com/Always-Ultra-Super-Wings-Unscented/dp/B01IZ5EYJO?th=1
That said, because I had everything taken out, I've had like..... NO discharge since the operation. (Day 5 post op here.) At all. I was so used to being a constantly leaky bloody faucet and not having anything come out is just so wonderful.
I have a bad back as well, and this helped a ton during my recovery; it’s counterintuitive to get a “pregnancy pillow” following a hysto, but trust me it helped w the back support.
I hear you on the ADHD front 😭 if you like competitive game shows like RPDR, big brother is a fun watch, addictive, and there’s a million seasons from different countries to watch on Paramount+, it helped me kill time. I also watched the entire Twilight Zone there during my recovery. Criterion Channel also great option.
Just focus on sleeping, chilling, eating well, and zoning out on the meds ;) it’s a long road, but be patient with yourself as much as you can be. Good luck!
My binder is like one long stretchy band, and velcro only on the end. So you can pull it tight and place the velcro anywhere on the band that is already wrapped around you. So you could literally use it around your wrist if you wanted to. I got two binders because I didn't know about size. The larger one is perfect for me, and I'd be happy to mail you the smaller one if you're in the continental USA - just private message me your mailing address. I have taken it out of the package to try it for size, but immediately folded it up and put it back into the package. It is 34 inches long, so you'd only have 10 or fewer inches of overlap (the larger one overlaps about 20 inches across my belly, and it's been really easy/perfect for me). I didn't use the binder at first, but as I'm able to walk around, everything JIGGLES and that HURTS, so the binder is really helpful for keeping things still. It's this one, size Small: https://www.amazon.com/ORTONYX-Breathable-Postpartum-Postoperative-ACOX524006/dp/B07MJV115C?ref\_=ast\_sto\_dp&th=1&psc=1
Here.
I have one that was prescribed by a doctor and this is the first linked I clicked on to show you so, you’d have to do some research on which is best to buy. Or you could ask your doctor for a prescription.
It definitely helped when the gas moved to my chest and shoulders. I wouldn’t put it on your abdomen.
I bought these in preparation for mine on the 26th. They're washable/reusable. And if you don't want this many there are other packages with less: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09L19GYYV/ref=dp_iou_view_item?ie=UTF8&th=1
I tried them on and then didn't want to stop wearing them haha
What helped me most getting in and out of bed is just a little Rubbermaid stool. This one: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000VAZ4AU?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1
Our bed is pretty tall and I normally have to crawl into it and getting out is sort of sliding down a bit. I knew neither of those were going to work, so the little stool made it so I could just step up, and sit down. Plus it's cheap.
We have a cane but I didn't need it. Used the grabber a few times. Other than that, the best things I got were granny panties a size bigger than my usual size. They came up above the incisions. I wore those for about 3 weeks till all the tape was off and the incisions weren't bothering me anymore.
I bought a box of pads expecting to need them, and I think I used 2 just as a precaution. Never really bled except for the first 24 hours.
If you get anything at all, get Gas-X and stool softeners. They will be your best friends for a week or so. :-)

Temporary handicap parking placard. My wife just thought of this today and I'm 100% gonna do it.
Cell phone holder. A tablet version exists, also.
Yes that sounds like the wedge pillow I’ve got! Here is the pregnancy pillow I got. I have it propped on the wedge and it works perfectly!

They stay put pretty well, you can put them on top of the sheet or underneath depending on your comfort level. They wash well and hang dry within a few hours.
Sometimes they are called "soaker pads" or "incontinence pads".
I actually wish I'd had them years ago because I have been sweating it up at night for a long time!
The thing I used most was an extension cord that had USB and plug options. This one, specifically. It was great to be able to charge multiple things.
I used my phone and Bluetooth speakers (or headphones) to listen to audio books and music. And had the option (but didn't use it) to have my tablet out to watch streaming things.
Chapstick, and your own slippers/slipper socks were both nice to have. I mostly slept or drifted in a haze, except when my Aunt (only allowed visitor) came by each day.
I live in these shorts and they were perfect for after surgery in June last year. I'm a size 16/18 and I went with an XXL for loose fitting comfort.
I am one week and a day post-hysterectomy. I don't know if you have any preference, but I have found these to be a life saver and comfortable. As for clothes, I've been living in loose sweats I had and t-shirts. Dresses would be good too.

I used a full pregnancy pillow which worked for lying on my back, and further into recovery, my sides. This is the one I bought: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0775SXR38/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_KHH9X1FKTCMQECEAA4S7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I also got a half bed-rail that just strapped under the mattress. That way I could sleep in our bed and I was able to get up on my own by just using my arms and pulling on the rail. Worked like a charm!
Having a cane or something for stabilization without using your core for right after surgery was also helpful when walking.
Good luck!!
I LOVE my wedge pillow and still use it daily to watch TV in bed even over 8 months PO! Someone recommended it on this board in fact-- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DTZVLTW/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They are the Surgipad surgical dressing =) I can’t find the Johnson and Johnson ones on Amazon but I have these ones also and they are the same exact thing! https://www.amazon.com/42502000-Abdominal-McKesson-Cellulose-Rectangle/dp/B07K318J93
Thank you! The BP bit was definitely alarming, and I won't deny that I was pretty freaked out because at first the many attendants around me were thinking it may be internal bleeding and the idea of going back into the OR was just too much. I was beyond relieved when just having my legs elevated did the trick. Still annoyed about the red blood cell/hemoglobin counts though.
And yes! I got this one, which has been great and so comfy so far. I will say I think I have a longer torso because this doesn't span my entire abdominal area, but it's definitely enough to do the trick.
Good luck with surgery!! I was so, so nervous going in and being out on the other side is just such a relief. Sure, there may be complications, but there's something different about facing the reality of a complication and doing what you have to do to address it vs. (at least for me) wondering if I really need to get the hysterectomy/are the complications worth it/it's elective, etc. But now it's just about chilling on the couch and watching Netflix :)
Pls see my comment above... I'm too dumb to find out how to post a picture on here...I'm not sure of it would be the exact same on Amazon, as it is not really a shelf product, but mixed by the local pharmacy. But I found out what the main ingredients are and found a similar tea on Amazon - see link, IF that works https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K8JW63F/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_HR1TE9ZMJ48FNMBCQTJX

Wow your bloating as subsided very early! I was reading earlier yesterday that the inflammation/swelling in the belly could last a few weeks! Hopefully by weeks end your swelling is gone!🤞

Ps. I fell asleep a little after 8pm 😂
I bought these off Amazon - Molasus Womens Boxer briefs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08JSGRK9L?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Been wearing them since op and they've been super comfy. I also didn't have any post -op bleeding (I had an abdominal hysterectomy, if that matters).

This is the pillow I have. But like I said, there are other ways to make regular pillows work as well.
A couple of things to consider:
I’d asked my doc, who was also my surgeon, about possible uti pain. He said that my bladder had been fused to my uterus, so that it was likely just pain, and normal, especially emptying at the end.
Secondly: my mom always got recurrent uti’s. Her urogyno recommended DMannose. It’s an herbal supplement. I used it as well, before my surgery, as I had to pee, all the time. Several times a night, etc., and this helped, a ton. I imagine that was because my bladder was fused, as now I can sleep through the night, and don’t have to pre every 5 minutes.
Anyway, DMannose. I’ll add a link to the one I get.
Just wanted to add that I am always always skeptical about herbal remedies, and take them with a vein of salt. Glad I didn’t with the D cause it made such a huge difference. As for mom, she passed away before we really got to see any real results.
Idk if it would help, but maybe a tens machine? I had a fibroid and possible endo and that thing has been a life saver. Just kinda vibrates away the pain. It also works on other type of sore muscles like your neck and legs and etc
I got this little pillow and it's been great! I took it with me to the hospital and was so grateful (it was especially perfect for the car ride home). I had it with me at all times the first few days too.

Woo! Congrats! That’s great that both you and your husband are taking time off for your recovery. I only took a week and a half off from work. Luckily, I’m only working for 9 days before having another week off and It helps that my work is pretty slow this time of year and that I work remote.
I’m only 11 days post-op and while I feel pretty good today, I didn’t expect to feel as bummed out when I had two “down days” over the weekend. But: recovery isn’t a completely linear progression. There are ups and downs, and I’ve noticed that if you tend to over do it, your body will tell you. Know that it’s okay to be in bed most of the day. Give yourself permission to get help with even the most simple tasks. Your mental well-being will thank you for being kind to yourself!
I also recommend getting some prune juice. I was taking stool softeners and still didn’t feel the need to go #2, but the prune juice kicked that into gear immediately. Even though things were soft, the actual bowel movement still felt uncomfortable. I couldn’t imagine how painful it would be to actually have to push!
Having a seatbelt pillow to rest under that lower strap helps a lot! I didn’t expect to feel like poop when we hit every bump on the road the first two days, but it got better faster than I expected! It helps to lie back in the seat as opposed to sitting up too.
Lastly, I drink collagen every morning and try to get my daily dose of protein. They both apparently help your body repair and heal faster.
Good luck with everything and know that things are much better on the other side, despite the surgery discomfort! I also had a very angry and enlarged uterus thanks to fibroids, cysts, and the surprise endo they found during surgery!
I'm 1 year post op as of Dec. 28th. Poop didn't come for me until like 3 days after surgery. I'd been taking stool softeners and gas-x all those days though and it wasn't painful at all when it finally happened. I'm a consistent water drinker anyway, so maybe that's why?
What hurt the most for me was the gas pains in my shoulder blade area. They fill you up with gas so they can see better (or so I'm told...I hope I'm not wrong. I wasn't awake so I can't confirm LOL) and the gas settled in my shoulder blade area for a few days. I just felt bloated, but I'd never felt bloated there before so it was really strange for me. "Pain" isn't the right word, but I remember that being the most problematic for me. I also was very weak in regards to sitting up. I felt fine the rest of the time so I had a hard time convincing my roommate that I really did actually need help from laying down to sitting up. He figured I was absolutely fine, and I can see why...I mean, by day 2 I was walking halfway around the block. My recovery went beautifully overall.
I bought this pillow to help with sleeping positions, and I STILL use it. I love this thing so much.
Everyone heals differently. I know a nurse and she said, "If you're taking pain killers when you're IN PAIN, you are HELPING your healing!" Do not feel like a baby at all.
I feel you on the lower back pain, I am a herniated disc recover-er. I used a wedge pillow behind me AND a bolster under my knees. Here and here Really helps relieve the stress on that lower back area. Or, many people here recommend a recliner of some sort. I had surgery in August and I'm still watching TV in bed with both my pillows!
I know you said moving around causes more pain, but really try to move. It will help the gas and the pain.
Don't get down on yourself. Before you know it you'll feel like a million bucks.
They also sell ones with arm rests to push off if your mom might need the added assistance.
I’m 3 weeks post op (total hysterectomy, right ovary, both tubes and an abdominal hernia repair) and I’m still using this pillow. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08XBJX5GB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_ETKK6S2S1Z5HN5ZS60KJ)
Initially, I used it over my abdomen but now I place it under my hip for a modified side lying. I slept on a large wedge with a king pillow under my knees for a little over a week.
Hi! Haven’t had my hysterectomy yet but have had 3 laps, two in winter. I got through with layering dresses with sweaters and leg warmers. I got some super long ones meant for dancers. They stay up pretty well, but I use a low-slung garter belt with them if I’m going to be moving around a lot.
Can’t remember where I got the garter belt, but the leg warmers are on Amazon. Highly recommend cable-knit leg warmers
These pants fit and feel like yoga pants, but they actually look like dress slacks when paired with the right top. Not thick, but a little too heavy for warm temps though. fwiw
TheNorth Face Everyday High-Rise Womens Pants
My boobs had never hurt more in my life between 3-4 weeks PO. After two weeks they're normal again. I wore medical bras like this one and it was a huge relief. Also "high impact" sport bras worked too.
I wore a lot of elastic waist stuff during my recovery and had no problem. I got a lot of these loose pants for work from home, but they also turned out to be excellent for my recovery.
These pants are super comfortable and have POCKETS!
Just something like this. I did need a bit of extra padding so I ended up putting a thin air mattress on it to give me a little more cushion. Didn't think of that when I had my first surgery and my tailbone was absolutely killing me after a couple of days!
This said, do me two favors- First make sure your surgeon knows you have a waterbed and gives you a recommendation on hw long you should wait before attempting to negotiate your way out of that. It takes a surprising lot of ab muscles to get out of a standard bed. I can't imagine trying to do that post -op! Second if you have the room, see if you can find a recliner since I'm guessing you're going to be in that longer than I did the zero G chair because of the waterbed! Borrow, rent, hit the Goodwill... If I had the space for it in my house I'd have preferred a recliner but we are small and tight on room plus had the chair available!
Colace, Gasx, a extension cord (so you don't have to bend over to plug in chargers) ice packs & I bought ice packs you can put in your underwear (link below) I avoided soda & prunes for first week because of the gas it gave me. I used heating pad for my back & ice packs on abdomen. Pillow for ride home to hold against abdomen. Crackers saltine & Graham crackers, chicken soup/broth, drink a lot of water.

I took a chance and paid extra for this one bc I know how wonky the cheaper ones can be when getting in and out. This is french engineered - totally smooth gliding and stays in place. Also v lightweight. Fyi. And It's padded enough except I do sit on one of my bed pillows. <3
I can't recommend D-mannose enough for UTIs. You can see the glowing reviews. It only works against e-coli which is responsible for 90% of uti infections from what I understand. It will not interfere with the abx at all. It's totally benign - no side effects, it only helps. It's the simple sugar in cranberries and e coli loves it and clings to it and then you pee it out. Has done miracles for me - a long time uti sufferer. I literally have not taken abx for uti in over 15 years.
Sending you good vibes and hope you feel better soon. You're definitely not back to the beginning though I understand the frustration! Your body has been through a lot. Maybe think about adding in some immune boosters for a little while. Taking colostrum in the morning on an empty stomach is a good thing. Wheat grass is a good thing. Probiotics. Quit sugar. etc. <3
There are some things I wish I knew beforehand and some things I'm glad I didn't know. And I'm afraid to tell you too much in case there are parts in there you might not have wanted to know either! I swear none of it is bad though. The whole process was way easier than expected - and still is going well at day 24 PO - despite me wishing it was all healing faster. 3 weeks is a long time to be like this and I have another few more weeks of it ahead. I just have to be patient.
We're not supposed to get constipated so my doctor had me on colace 2x per day plus miralax. And my stomach is sensitive so all that plus 4 different kinds of pain pills made me really miserable. Like my stomach killed and I felt like I had to go #2 for days 1-3. Literally just sat on the toilet doing nothing for 3 hrs those days. Nothing surgery did was bothering me much at all, but those dang laxatives had me so miserable!
So I switched a magnesium laxative that I know works well for and is gentle. And then I reduced my pain meds - without making myself uncomfortable - day by day until finally on day 9 I was not on any pain meds. Nothing against pain meds, they just made my stomach hurt.
Also on day 3 I figured out how to sleep. I have an adjustable bed where the feet go up, but what I liked most was taking my big husband pillow and putting under my legs. I slept like a rock like that. Around day 10 I could shift to my side if I wanted, but even at day 24 I'm using some kind of pillow support to keep comfortable.
Day 24 and I'm still moving slow!
This is the first and only cookbook I've used on it.... but there might be better out there. I am far from 100% strict on it. I will have pizza and fries and etc a few times a month without issue. I did have to follow the diet closely though for a few years until I could "cheat" without repercussions. It was well worth transitioning my diet to AIP because the relief is so immense!
https://www.amazon.com/Autoimmune-Paleo-Cookbook-Allergen-Free-Approach/dp/0578135213
I have yet to put on a pair of socks, but I bought myself a shower foot cleaner thing from amazon and it’s been a lifesaver! I’m about 5 weeks post op and I still need it. This is the one I got
Shower Foot Massager Mat Bath Massage Pad Shower Foot Massager Scrubber & Cleaner Acupressure Mat for Feet with Non-Slip Suction Cups to Improve Circulation,Exfoliation,Reduce Feet Pain https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08T9DZ78X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_EK074DBCK0VRM9EMXGMS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
The suction on bottom doesn’t work too well so I hold onto my shower railing and clean one foot at a time. I just pour some body wash on the mat, toss water on to make it sudsy, and then have at it.
D-MANNOSE! I had a helluva time with UTIs and yes I'd get off abx and the next day it would start again. D-Mannose saved me and many women I ran into who were having the same problem. It worked wonders for everyone I know who tried it. I hope it helps you too. It's totally benign. Can't OD on it. It's the simple sugar in cranberries (which is why cran helps so much). 90% of UTIs are from e coli and they stick to the D-mannose and then you pee them out. Try 1tbsp in water every hour or so depending on how bad the infection is. You should not have to wait long to see improvement. Vitamin Shoppe usually has some in stock if you don't want to wait for Amazon or Vitacost delivery.
If you want to try something right now then you can change the ph of your urine by drinking baking soda. Do that preferably on an empty stomach since it will also dilute your stomach acid. You can mix the baking soda with vinegar first and then drink. I've done this a few times with success. If you have ph strips you can test your urine before and after the baking soda drink and when the soda is working you'll see on the test strip. Bacteria can't survive in the basic environment and you can kill them that way also.
Yes to probiotics also for sure.
I've had similar issues. Def get yourself checked out if it's more than mild pain that doesn't go away in a day or so and if you notice any bleeding. Also consider changing the type of lube you are using. I switched to using this and it's been a game changer.
I would ask your doctor (about showering) before surgery, since it seems to vary greatly!
I had a total, lapro, vaginal assisted hysterectomy and stayed overnight at the hospital. My doctor told me to take off the bandaids (I still had steri-strips over the sutures, underneath the bandaids) and shower when I got home.
Idk if she advised that to prevent infection or something, or if she just figured I’d want to. Either way, I showered when I got home and everything was totally fine. I had no problem stepping in, I just went slow and held onto the bar. I had my husband sit in the bathroom with me for company, just in case I felt weird.
Since I stayed overnight at the hospital, the nurses got me up to use the bathroom after a few hours. After the first two times, I could get up and do it all by myself. I had no problem at home! Stairs weren’t an issue either, besides making me tired.
(Bathroom related tip: take stool softeners religiously for the first week+! And it may take a little time to have a BM. Just be gentle on yourself.)
My personal biggest “struggle” was trying to sit up in bed and get out of my nest. I bought these straps to help with that, and I was actually glad I did! (I probably wouldn’t have used any of the other fancy stuff I had considered buying, like bed rails or potty rails etc.)
I’m actually still using it 4 weeks out from surgery even though I’m mostly back to normal mobility!
Vive Bed Ladder Assist - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07215NF33/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_KPH296G2YZ6VVFXVTE19?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Amen about those dresses. Unique and comfy. Here's a link to a similar one to my favorite, which I've had for about 5 or 6 years now.. Perhaps others will enjoy...comfy dress
I am much more level with my estradiol. I also have the twice a week patch. I put it on my abdomen under my pants line, switching sides every time. I will say these have been a godsend: https://smile.amazon.com/Skin-Tac-H-Adhesive-TacAway-Remover-Wipes/dp/B002672TV8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=tack+away&qid=1626210968&sr=8-3 they get off the residue from the patches which is my only real complaint.
Before applying, I swab the area with alcohol to dry out the area, which makes it adhere better. If I showered beforehand, I wait 30 mins to 1 hour before applying, nor use any lotions, as wet skin or oils can mess with the stick. I was recommended the rolls, https://www.amazon.com/3M-Health-Care-16004-Transparent/dp/B01AWCD0I4/ and you can cut them to size to generously cover the area.
But I switched to a generic Vivelle dot 2 times a week, which is more of a thin, small diameter sticker and it sticks much better, I don't use the film anymore. Just like birthcontrol, we seem to need to try a few different brands before we find one that works.
I didn't know outer thigh was a placement - all the patches I've done say only to apply to the upper butt, lower stomach, or hip. I find the butt spot the best, with very little stretch and friction with clothes.
This is the pillow I used in conjunction with my recliner to sleep and spend my days. It helped a lot. I've had the pillow for years though due to fibromyalgia and it's always helped put me in a very comfortable position. Does not work as well with a fully flat back though, as I still want to roll around then.
I had my surgery in Dec. and I'm still using this pillow to sleep. I love it so much! There isn't a need anymore. It is just comfy!
We actually got this pillow system a while ago when my husband had COVID and was restricted to the bedroom, but it's worked well for me post-surgery as well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TXGNYTM/
I also have two pretty standard king-sized pillows that I have been using under my knees and as a body pillow at night.
Im using thisthis
I have the pregnancy pillow wedge into a corner of a high loveseat, then a throw pillow in front of that for my low back. Then I have a king pillow behind my head. I wrap the looser arm of the pregnancy pillow around my waist like a seatbelt. Then I have a pillow under my knees. (My legs are supported by an ottoman.) on top of that I have an un zipped puffy sleeping bag, and then another king pillow across my lap. This has helped me sleep sitting up which has helped a lot with gas.
I used this one. It was a life saver in the first 2 weeks because it hurt my stomach muscles to lay completely flat. With the wedge pillow, I could sleep with my upper body a little elevated and not stretch my stomach muscles or belly button incision. Later on I was able to flip it and use it as a back rest when I wasn't ready to sit at a 90 degree angle all day for work.
I used this one for both my lap removal of endo in November and my robotic hysterectomy 4 days ago. In between, my husband used it for a sprained ankle. It’s worth every penny for post-surgical recovery!
I used a flat pillow for much of my recovery, but a few weeks in, I got this. Sadly, it's not available now. I also used a stuffed animal when I was up and around.
Since you can't be there for her, there are things you can get to help make her recovery easier.
First and foremost: Make sure she has a belly pillow. In fact, get that before the surgery and make sure your dad brings it to the hospital when he brings your mom home. Every bump in the road is going to hurt. And when she's at home, every cough and sneeze will hurt. I used a stuffed animal, but I wish I'd gotten this a whole lot sooner.
Tell your mom to buy comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Elastic-waist pants or shift dresses are best.
She should get a few pair of slide on shoes so she doesn't have to bend to tie, zip, or buckle them. Since my surgery was in June, I wore sandals a lot. (I already had slide-on shoes because I'm a transcriptionist, and I like to work the foot pedal barefoot (or in stocking feet).)
Get her a grabber. It'll make it easier if she drops something.
Bending and stretching is not going to be an option for her, so I'm recommending things that will prevent that.
I bought this one on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DLKEDE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
It helps to "hold things in", if you will. The first several days post-op when you're feeling puffy and your insides are sore, this can offer support and stability. I feel like it helped with my pain as well.
I have a fairly big wedge pillow i use to elevate my legs and take pressure off my lower back. I did use it a decent amount during my recovery as it felt better to rest in that position for me. Not sure if it's similar to what OP mentioned but here's a link to the one I have:
