I went out for about an hour to test out my magnet. Stopped at a small dam that people fish from. Along with these items, I removed about 10 broken/ rusty fishhooks (along with about 200 yards of old line), two soup can lids, and a couple unidentifiable hunks of steel.
I picked the magnet up from amazon mainly because it was cheap & shipped fast.

I DIY’d a shroud from a 20oz soda bottle. I learned a few things while on my first outing:
I should have brought a pair of waders with me. Wading out to get my snagged magnet from the rocks was insanely cold!
Magnet fishing was a lot of fun & I should have started a little earlier. I ran out of daylight.
I should probably plan to get a tetanus shot soon.
I had one too, 2 of them actually, i gave them to a friend, but they were actually really great as a throwing axe, very easy to get it to stick into the target
This is a real-time GPS tracking device. It can only be used for locating the unit itself, which should be firmly attached to whatever you are trying to track with it.
Here is a very similar model.
It operates via a monthly subscription fee paid to whatever company issued the device.
This one is really strong and feels pretty dang sturdy.

The main differences are just in pull strength. You should start with something like this and upgrade if you think it is necessary. Make sure that the bolt won't come loose by using loctite on it. Use a figure 8 knot to tie a rope to your magnet so that it won't come loose. Tie the rope off to something before you toss it in so that you don't lose your rope and magnet in one throw. Pull in short bursts and let it settle, this increases the likely hood of hooking onto something. When you throw the magnet again make sure to toss it in a different direction. Wear gloves that you don't mind getting wet and dirty. I use an old pair of gardening gloves or construction gloves if I'm going for something that seems pretty heavy.
After all this is done and you are done then you have a choice of taking your treasure home and cleaning it up. Which I suggest you watch some rust or metal cleaning youtube videos. Or you can find a city dumpster or trash can and leave it by there as most places will take it away for you.
If you google brute magnets, you’ll find what I believe is their 880 pound pull magnet. IMO it’s one of the best for the price and really good quality!
Sure. Here you go. I fully admit they may not be as good. They are 100% better than my NO GLOVES, but, maybe not as good as the ones you picked.
I did not like this one.
I really like this one. Though I did not use the rope or anything. Might be okay, but I just bought it for the magnet.
I wanted a grappling hook and a magnet with two mount points so a kit seemed the way to go. I was looking for a dropped bicycle so I had the magnet flat side down from the rope and let the current move it while I was simply raising it straight up and down. If I throw it out and drag it back I use the side mount point so the flat side drags along the bottom.
Amazon may be a netter friend here.

Short answer: Knot: A figure eight follow through knot to securing your magnet to the rope Rope: Amazon link https://www.amazon.com/Nylon-Rope-inch-Solid-Braid/dp/B01G5ZORLQ
Long answer:
I would disagree about using paracord. It's typically rated for 550 lb/~249 kg load. Your pull force would exceed that. I'm in the S.E. U.S. I used a Polypropylene rope. It's strong enough for me to reel in shopping carts.
From the sitcky "General tips for new magnet fishers": "...Nylon or polyethylene rope are the best choices, due to their strength and resistance to rot. Thinner rope is lighter and you’ll be able to “feel” things better, but thicker rope is easier on the hands, and much stronger. I went with 3/8-inch nylon. The exact brand I use is a fairly soft rope, so it is very easy on the hands, but is slightly susceptible to fraying. I got 50 feet. If you are fishing from high bridges, you may want 100 feet or more. " HTH!
It's a two-component thing, the flexible thing is called 'Welle' (wave) in German and I'm not sure of the English equivalent but you should be able to find one easily in the hardware store, they are sold for Dremel tools and drills. The wire brush was part of a set with polishing wheels and a couple different grinding and wire brush attachements, my hardware store has a full assortment of drill attachments. Where are you from? I found this on US amazon that looks like mine, make sure to get this twisted kind because they hold up much longer.
I also have one like that for the angle grinder but it takes a reckless madman to use that because 11k rpms are just insane. I used it to clean off paint and mud from bicycles to use them for bottle openers and it's scary.
I discovered this stuff when I ordered a huge 3 ton hand winch, and it came supplied with this rope rather than steel cable. So much easier on the hands. I picked up lighter strength rope and swapped out the steel cable on my shop hoist as well. I'm going to swap out my cable for this on my Honda SxS as well. Good luck.
Here's a link to some pretty serious rope at Amazon. If this isn't the length or strength you want, just search at Amazon for "synthetic Winch Rope"

I've only been out, maybe a dozen times, but I've never heard about the Loctite thing. What is it?
Not sure if I've just been lucky or what, but have never come close to loosing my magnet.
I have been wanting to start myself so I cannot give you a 100% recommendation. But I will tell you that if you go on Amazon you can find entire kits for magnet fishing. (Rope, gloves, magnet, etc all in one). Let me see if I can find it and maybe others can tell us both if it is a good purchase.
So I have almost the same setup. I have one of those reels but it has a stand on it, so you can have it on the ground and roll it up. You can also put your foot on it when "casting" so you don't toss it in the water. The neat thing about my setup is that the reel can be squeezed into a 5 gallon pail, and it's a tight squeeze. So I can pull the amount of rope I need and shove it in the bucket for stability. It's been working great for me so far.

I went with this one, also good to 2000lbs.
If I ever have to use it I’ll try to remember to post about it’s effectiveness/ease of use.
I started out with a 500lb magnet, similar to this:
I tied a rope to it and out a 1 liter bottle top over it to help with tangles.
If it gets stuck on something, well, you try and pull it off with different angles or get a buddy. But more than a few people have had to leave theirs behind and give up
My Google Search for "platinum online products magnet purple" led me directly to https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011IEMXM4 (same picture even) for $92.99,
I feel like these types of ropes retain water too well, I use this one.
Its 1/4 inches by 100 feet, used it for the first time last Sunday April 5th and it held up well and didn’t retain so much water.
Heard someone say harbor freight. But tbh I got this one off Amazon and I'm about to test it tomorrow.

This is why I carry a boat trailer winch in my backpack - I built a stand for it, and chain it to a stake or tree for support. It hauls 3500 lbs with two selectable crank gears, so I can get my magnet or grapple back if I hook onto anything short of a locomotive or bridge.
I use this one:

For future reference the grappling hook is not meant to ever go near the seafloor. It is meant to lift items up that your magnet has already pulled to the surface.
I got my son in law this one. He thought the kit was cool, but he squealed line a kid when he saw the Batman-like grappling hook. It comes with a scraper and bag to hold all if it too.

Sure - it's just a generic one, and unfortunately it looks like it's not available currently on Amazon, but this is the one I got.
I'm sure there are a bunch of other ones out there, too, and this community is great for ideas on the best ones to get at relatively low costs for starting off. This one had actually come up a couple times in different threads, which is why I'd sent it to my wife to get my for Christmas in the first place, haha.
Bring a towel, a change of clothes (at minimum your bottoms and shoes), and I recommend some rubber grip work gloves like these.
You’re going to get wet. Especially pulling stuff out and when the rope itself gets wet.
My last time I also took one of these utility pry bars, as I was going under some bridges that had a lot of metal underneath. Wound up needing to use it as a lever to pull off of a beam that had a lip preventing me from sliding the magnet off.

For a starter, something like this is ideal. Later on you can look at stronger magnets if (you and) your son get(s) 'hooked.'
Magnetic fields obey the inverse square law (between distance and strength), the amount of power it'd have to have to pull all the up from that far would be insanely dangerous.

Magnet is on a d-ring so I can switch between different sizes and actual fishing gear....Cause I can’t /shouldn’t eat things that are magnetic.
This is the one I just bought. It’s a pretty good double sided magnet, with a decent weight rating. It also has two attachment points, so you can hang it from the top or the side. It comes with the magnet, rope, a grappling hook, and gloves
From what I’ve seen in my use (I haven’t had it long), I’d say put locktite on the screws to keep them in place, but it’s not necessary. Also, use some electrical tape or shrink tubing to reinforce the knot (it comes with a small piece of shrink tube but it’s not much). This could be said for any magnet though

Something like this https://www.amazon.com/Capacity-Operated-Two-Way-Ratchet-Trailer/dp/B07WC4BXMH. This is easy to have in back of car ( could in theory pull some cars, if strong enough ) and is kinda cheap i guess. Works for tons of stuff.

No, his is a different brand but Brute Magnetics does have a 1000 Lb Magnet on Amazon. It's pretty large though.
We use boating line from the hardware store, it handles water well (paracord for example doesn't like getting wet) and is reasonably thin. High breaking strength too, your back will break before the line does.
As for the magnet we use this one, it's pretty much perfect and cheap enough. We use the same version with an eyelid already installed, with this one you need to also buy a bolt and eyelid but I can't find our exact version on amazon.
The rappelling I've done was with a harness I tied myself with tube webbing $40 for 20, $50 for 30 yards on Amazon. Details say 4046 pounds at 100 yards. Sounds like what you're remembering.
I had that same concern...I found a deal on Amazon to get 2 decent magnets for $50 bucks...if one isn’t strong enough then I just attach the other for more pull force
I opted to get both bc I had the same struggle...got 2 good ones for 50 bucks on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QN3BSD1?ref=myi_title_dp
If one isn’t strong enough, I attach the other to increase the pull force...works great!
When I first started I couldn’t decide either so I found a set on Amazon where you get both...pull force is decent and if one isn’t enough I just use them both at the same time. I wouldn’t go too big in case it gets stuck on something that’s too heavy for you to pull out. Hope this helps.

That's awesome! I live in Canada so, Amazon . ca is more limited. There's a few 1700 pound double sided ones but the reviews say they're sketchy / like false advertising. There are some big single pull ones though, up to about 1200 lbs, but I didn't bother with that - yet.

I realise this isn't helpful now, but I purchased this Muscular Magnets kit from Amazon as my first magnet. I'll update with my first impression when I go out next Wednesday.
I just bought my own first magnet to try this out, and that one seems pricey for what you get. I went with this one and it’s definitely cheap but I didn’t want to drop $30+ on something that I know could very well get lost soon or just not be for me.
So I'm 100% uninformed. Never done it before, but saw this sub and got interested immediately. I just ordered this yesterday - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083SK9T3F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It comes later today, and I'm hoping to take it out this weekend. Seemed a fairly good value for a beginner set? Brute is suggested often, but I didn't want to drop 60-80 dollars on a hobby I might not enjoy. That $40 was more chewable for a starter.
I agree, doesnt really fit sub BUT you can find them on amazon lol.
>Where would I look for one of those magnets and about how much do they cost?
They are everywhere now. Amazon has them for $15 or less. For $25 you can get a kit complete with rope and box.

My godfather gave me some money so I think I've found something to buy with it. Before I do, could u tell me if u can see any obvious flaws with this magnet design?
Yeah, it's just a thread sealant; keeps the threads from banging loose over time (which they do). UK might have a different version, but loctite is pretty prolific, I'd be surprised if you don't have it. Link below off the US market for reference; this is the blue stuff, which will keep the threads from coming loose, but will still let you remove it if you actively try. Another nut could work, but thread sealer is better for the purpose; it's also cheap, and the tiniest bottle will last a very long time. It only takes a drop or two on the threads.
Tucking the wrists into the gloves isn't a guarantee. Just a few days ago I found that out the hard way. I was propping myself up in a weird position working on an overhead groove and molten metal spilled out and dripped into the top of my glove, burned me pretty good. But on the plus side, it burned me in the shape of the Little Dipper constellation, so that'll look pretty rad if it scars up, haha. I've only been welding since last summer, but I've learned quickly that if you're stick welding, the sparks will find you. Better safe than sorry! THIS is the jacket I've been using. Not as stylish as yours, but it does a good job and the price was right.
That's a bummer they won't ship over there, though. I never really thought about the consumables being different over there though, so I guess that makes sense.
And yeah, the briefcase welders are pricey. I've heard of people picking them up used at a reasonable price, but definitely out of my price range as well.
Yeah, I'll let you know if I find anything better. I hate having to deal with cord bunching up everywhere.
Also, I have no clue why they seem so weak. Especially since the other magnet I have is only a 265 lb one but it handles much better. Maybe just bad batch?

As others have said, you are likely to be disappointed with a magnet's actual pull strength. For example, I have a 375lb magnet and I lose things that are not even close to that weight (thank god, I couldn't lift 375 lbs).
Things that reduce the magnet's pull strength are
In my opinion, go with as big a magnet that you can afford and that is within your rope's strength rating.
And remember, you might someday come across that submerged, flat piece of metal and it just might take your magnet. Just the risks of the game I suppose.
This is the magnet I got and I like it quite well. Excellent for an entry and mid level fishing magnet.
I use 2 neodymium magnets @ 100 lb. pull each. They are stackable, meaning they combine strength when used together. Having said that, it pays off to get a few of those than to have all different sized magnets to suit any situation where the force to pull changes (i.e. if you are with someone on a pier v. alone on a fishing boat). This one is reliable. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C6PB7C6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
