Easiest way is to get some bitcoin, then simply send that to the address we will publish on the day. Bitcoin is hard for newcomers, but there are plenty of helpful sites with advice. Very small amounts can be purchased for instance (0.5 per day) from bitbargain.co.uk if you are in the UK.
The community will decide on when the SAFE project is live. It will be in testnet very soon though, there may be three test nets before the currency is live. It's all in the open on the mailing list. That's a great place to get help to. No large wallet files, you are correct there. When the network is live nobody will be able to switch it off which is a really good thing. Forks are good if they add support to the community, upstream pull requests etc. all will be cool to.
No exchange will accept paypal, please be careful and if you get an on line wallet get a good one, it is massively suggested and strongly advised to use a secured local wallet on a secure machine.
Conversion of MaidSafeCoin to safecoin will be via a one way peg (kinda prove you burn the MaidSafeCoin and a message signed by that address with your safecoin address in it). It should be very simple.
The address for bitcoin will be made available on Tuesday at 9am (GMT+1)
Mailing list is here, plenty of help and suggestions, please ask and many will give advice. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!members/maidsafe-development
Here are some general data on the maidsafecoin:
https://coinmarketcap.com/assets/maidsafecoin/
When the network is ready for the full release then there will be a swap in which maidsafecoin will finally become SafeCoin (sounds better right) :)
Then those tokens/coins will function has a form of value in which people can use for various actions on the safenet, one being buying storage, another might be to buy a product or service of any kind really.
Safecoin and safenet will have nothing to do with Bitcoin or any other crypto at this point and be its own completely separated network.
You will however be able to interact with the "real internet" within Safenet and visa-versa, by for example using a chrome extension or by doing tasks such as exchanging SafeCoin for Bitcoins on an exchange on the safenet.
In regards to the creation of tokens, the details are not completely set but there will be a slight inflation as a reward for nodes that contribute to the network, if i'm not totally mistaken. Some might worrie and think "but what if that makes coins worth less" and such, but consider this, the devs obviously own SafeCoins themselves, so do their friends and family and everyone they have communicated with over the years, I think it's highly unlikely they would configure the creation of new coins in such a way that it would hurt those involved.. And actually when I think about it, it wouldn't suprise me if SafeCoins once everything is said and done are more rare than most people initially thought.
>I have become convinced there is some real potential here.
Welcome and may a congratulate you on the timing. Not many people here as this thing is getting born.
The current coin is an Omni asset MAID but as you've noted it will become its own coin as safecoin once the SAFE network is stable and live.
ERC20 sounds like a Ethereum confusion and there are likely copy coins on Ethereum and CounterParty etc trying to fool noobs - don't buy in those!.. see https://coinmarketcap.com/assets/maidsafecoin/ and the markets listed there to be more sure what you are looking at.
Some interesting stats/info about double spending here: https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/maidsafe-development/hz30YduO4I0
I am unable to confirm the calculations are correct, but assuming they are, double spends should be harder to achieve than with blockchain technologies. To gain influence over all transactions, you would need over 80% of the nodes (according to calculations).
Maybe you could comment on the dev thread to confirm?
Perhaps you would like to comment on the developer list here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/maidsafe-development/cew9LcEz5lc
I won't quote the full text here, but it looks like multiple steps are taken to prevent successful sybil attacks. Do you think these are insufficient?
EDIT: FWIW, I think this part is key: 'Generally, nodes can only modify data which they themselves put onto the network. Such requests are cryptographically signed.'
From our mailing list https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/maidsafe-development/6TlaoLtAgoY
It's a new platform. You can install anything. At the moment there is no http type program there never mind php etc. parsers. This is all possible though as this is a huge hard drive and can also handle structured data. I think there are many ways to do it an as soon as a project wants to we will seek out the best mechanism for doing it. I see easily a client with a php parser or javascript dom that connects to the system. This would point at the public data from a user so
safe://blog/
In this dir a file, say blog.safe
When the user connects to this file s/he can read it with all the content parsed through whichever parser the client has installed (no server but client, this is the big difference). As the client connect to the site a challenge response can be there that basically looks like a login button. Pressing the button the client (automatically) can access the site validated with an anonymous public key. This allows session etc. and user data such as comments. Clients can then upload data they want such as video or comments (the link to client data is published in this public drive) and you can have wordpress/reddit/youtube etc. It's all up for grabs. You can also link to other 'sites' just like the web does but use safe:// links instead of htpp:// (no https, we encrypt everything every time anyway).
That's the quick version though. This can be much better with some focus, although not much focus, the thinking is just different. You could share a whole program in the safe:// directory and folk could run that to. There are many opportunities.
I'm getting mine off .. just cause I have that option enabled now to withdraw beyond default $2k and seeing their own statement of the obvious:
> Our plans to handle potential BTC network disruptions: https://poloniex.com/press-releases/2017.07.24-Our-plans-to-handle-potential-BTC-network-disruptions/
but still, of all the exchanges Poloniex is perhaps the best one to be stuck on. Just avoid making any transactions for a while until it's clear what they are doing and what change has occurred. That might be a few weeks.. expect they would update with a statement. Low risk I'd say.
> Safecoins will only come into existence once the network is launched.
> However, it is currently possible to buy MaidSafeCoins, a proxy coin that uses the Omni protocol. MaidSafeCoins will be exchanged 1:1 to safecoins once the SAFE Network goes live.
See this FAQ question for more info: How can I buy safecoins?
A video ;-) quite cool > https://www.kickstarter.com/team?ref=footer I like the illustrations in this list > http://www.boom-online.co.uk/creating-creative-meet-the-team-pages-with-13-awesome-examples/#axzz2s6Gu3SMN
I was going to post a link to Satoshi's "about us" page but couldn't find it ;-)
Anyway, here's bitcoin's "about us" page: https://bitcoin.org/en/about-us
and its "meet the team" page: https://bitcoin.org/en/development
I could get behind something more like these. Especially having 3rd party devs appearing in the list of contributors.
