I have a few friends who use this and see it recommended online a lot as well. It's not magic themed or anything, but its definitely functional
I use an amazing app called cardwatch :) add all the cards you are looking for and just click refresh a few times a day or week and you get the lowest price avaliable at that exact time. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.avalax.cardwatch

Bundles would be my suggestion too. Heres a couple good ones at 50 on amazon. Theres more bundles to pick from than that, but I'm on mobile and at work :/ Sorry for fat link, on mobile. Also I meant to reply directly to op but this works too.
Find out which set he likes the most right now and consider getting him a "bundle" or "gift bundle" of that set.
Also, it sounds like he wants a "playmat," and you can make a custom playmat with any image right on Amazon!
I agree with others here, PLAY WITH HIM A LOT!! I want little more than for my gf to play with me often <3
My sister got her fiance one of these.https://www.amazon.com/Land-Station-Magic-Gathering/dp/B09B2VYRKS/ref=asc_df_B09B2VYRKS/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=563550137739&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17985448425467697936&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&...
I'm on mobile pls excuse the huge link
She got him the metal one, but it looks like it's a limited edition item now and 250$+ but theres a flat one for 40 here.
Every mtg player needs card storage. If you’ve been playing 30 years or are brand new, you need more/better storage.
I’m a big fan of the ultimate guard arkhiveAmazon link I can put 5 sleeved commander decks + tokens in it. Fantastic.
MTG Competitive is a new app with an interesting new way of life counter to tracks your games better. You can also save photos of your decks and search cards, It has timers ando multiplayers screens, and you can share a detail of your game as PDF with time register and life register with ids (fetch, shock, combat damage, gain life, etc) MTG Competitive
I like BCW cardboard storage boxes. They come in a variety of sizes, if you're just starting out the 400 count ones seem fine, although smaller and larger are available. Most of my collection is stored in a few of the 800 count boxes. Kids can also write and color the boxes. Below is a link with some pictures. Not sure the price is all that good, but it has pictures.
Toleration community college YouTube channel reviews a lot of deck boxes of every kind and that is my go to before I buy.
Personally I like ultimate guard "flip n tray"
So we've learned that you can proxy cards and you can proxy friends. Why not combine the two?

Check this out, its a premade red-green 60 card deck on a pretty good deal right now.
All basic forests are the same. If you have a card shop near you, they will likely sell it to you for super cheap. They might even just give you some.

If you don't have a card shop near you, you can get bulk land on ebay. There's also land stations for sale you can buy. This one is from the next set "Brothers war", there are others but the only difference between basic land is the art.
These are the outers I use. I get two double boxes of 500 at a time for my outers. I use whatever for inner sleeves as long as they are side fit.
https://www.amazon.com/Premium-Black-Double-Sleeves-BCW/dp/B017CEP0L0/
This was my first precon commander. It's great for the beginning if you have a fix Group to play with.
Goal of this deck is to attack with Horrors so 5he enemy have to Mill. And if the enemy Mills a creature or an artifact you can bring it unser sour controlled without paying the mana Costs.
So you get board controll with the strong creatures of your opponents, and you finally overwhelm them.
You will learn much about different cards because you will play cards out of other decks. And for a precon it's pretty strong.
So the sales dude told me " okay maybe you won't win with this de k against the ur dragon, but at least you will annoy your friends"
He was right! I changed around 10 cards with a total value of around 30 bucks and now it's competitive.
There are books from the original days of Magic the Gathering, here is on example this is a book involving Greensleeves who actually is now a card as of DMU, Greensleeves, the Maro Sorceror. https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-Sacrifice-Clayton-Emery/dp/0752202170/
So i poked around just now for ideas. Something like this kit from Amazon should easily do the trick. It would also help hold the front and back panels of the drawer frame itself more rigid and reduce the chance of the corners of the drawers from failing. It essentially connects the center of the front pull panel to the center of the rear wall/panel of the drawer. So if would take the "pull weight" stress off the front panel and corners. I think i am going to give these a shot.
Btw, there are apps where you can just scan cards with your phone camera like Delver Lens.
It's not 100% accurate on card edition, and it obviously can't determine the condition of a card, but it's a quick way to sort though a collection and find the more expensive ones.
Use an app like Delver to scan the cards with your phone camera.
It gives you prices, totals, allows you to sort the cards, and also is exportable for later use elsewhere.
Just note that the card edition may not be accurate but you can easily edit them.
I think you're talking about the MTG arena online game?
For clarification when I said arena starter deck I meant this...
https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-Starter-Ready-Play/dp/B098884RQ5/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=mtg+starter+deck&qid=1659891343&sr=8-3
I honestly don't remember what booster pack I got.
However, I do in fact also play the online arena game sometimes. So I will still use this advice, thanks.
I think it is hard to beat this deal, 2x solid commander decks that are a lot of fun to play heads-up versus each other, at less then $20 per.
I'd recommend the landfall one for the more experienced player (mostly just due to # of triggers to remember/resolve), whereas the rogue one is pretty straightforward.
Unless you're in tournament play, yes on the d6.
These are the dice I use, Yellow for white, purple for black, and all other colors as is.
yo are we talking pens! I love pens! Hit that baby with Prismacolor Premier Fine Line Marker. I use the 08 daily. Also a cheap alternative is LePen. Sharpie Fine points seems to be an issue for me and Pilot G2 have also cause smearing for me #LeftHandProblems

I think I'm using Dragon Shield inners and regulars for my ARF stuff, so I'll likely use those again as well.
After doing a bit of searching I found some side loaders that are mildly expensive, since I'll have to buy 2 packs of 50. Any opinions on these?
I have a saporling/fungus commander deck and I use some little plastic mushrooms I found on amazon.
Here is a link to some "transparent sticker paper" found on amazon like what he is using. If you want to shop around a bit more just search for that.

Card Kingdom has pretty good market for what you're looking for. I use ManaBox to digitally store my collection, and you can even purchase cards through that and it'll give you fair market value for cards.

foam borad can be cut to make dividers for the bin you have now cost about 2 bucks at any craft store. however the boxes made to store cards are pretty darn cheap MTG Storage Box holds 3200 cards is only 15.00. Hell for a collection your size assuming you have copies of cards, a binder and MTG binder pages would not be to costly
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=delverlab.delverlens hey bro this keeps up with all the tcgs prices on a day-to-day you're able to make multiple folders make list of cards you even want and keep track of all your rares with a photograph
absolutely perfect, that list answers all my questions :) and it also shows that when i buy booster packs i could get duplicate groups but they still slightly differ which is nice.
Does this look like a good deal to get started, cant bring myself to buy the big box for over £100 ...
So if i get one of these I can shuffle them to create tow decks i can play ?
and if i want to add another player, i can just buy two jumpstart booster packs and shuffle them ?
you've bought this
BCW boxes are the answer for good but cheap, however, a three-ring binder and Dragon Shield 18-Pocket pages will look better, and assuming you have more than one copy of some card 50 pages will give you a bit of room to grow
perfect, going to get both commander decks i think
one last question ... when we went to the store to play, we got two free decks of about 25 cards each i think (white, blue and green) my son is 9 and he manages to play with the decks - does this type of deck/game have a name ?
I also bought this set .... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Gathering-MTG-M21-SK-EN-Starter-Display/dp/B089SYL8Z3/ref=sr_1_6?crid=115KAIAEC4VJG&keywords=mtg+starter+deck&qid=1643990359&sprefix=mtg+starter+decks%2Caps%2C46&sr=8-6
what sort of game are those decks designed for (60 cards each i think)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pt.tscg.mtgmanager I find this one to be pretty good at that. the scanner is pretty accurate, sometimes you need to adjust what set it is, or if it's foil or not, but overall the free version is great.

It will make sorting cards a breeze!
For my first battle box / cube thing I used a bunch of inner sleeves from ultra pro because they were stupid cheap and the cards I were using were mostly commons and uncommons, so not really worth that much. I actually just ordered these off Amazon a couple days ago. They only have a few reviews, but they seem positive. They’re also pretty cheap so I took the gamble. I’ll update this post tomorrow when they arrive to let ya know
I'm pretty sure he got it on Amazon here: Wooden Life Counter on Amazon
Just know that it's a tough build before you get one for yourself
I can understand why! Best investment - BCW storage boxes. Just easier to hold and keep stacked and organize. Personal preference is the shoebox size that can hold top loaders ( an use as dividers, store foils, etc.
Note - link provided as reference, but from LGS if possible. Also much cheaper - I get them for 3-4$

Nevermind, I must have been thing of the lagoon sleeves, this seller had only 2 reviews. Here's the seller if anyone wants to gamble.

I've been using this app to keep track of my collection and it shows prices for the cards. If I notice any that are higher I usually put them aside because they are probably viable. Ik it's not what you were looking for but I've found some pretty interesting combos I might try in commander because of it.
What I mean is this:
https://www.amazon.com.au/Ultra-Pro-Standard-Protector-Sleeves/dp/B005BFZAK4
Double sleeved of course but you can use both sides in these. I do believe Dragon Shields have clear ones as well.
gonna hijack
Everyone should put trackers on their bags, in deck boxes, and in your playmat tubes.
Any deck worth more than 100.00 of mine(like all of them) gets a GPS tracker, I use tile trackers I have the 'Wallet title" in a few boxes and mate title under some of my cards in boxes I keep mate titles in my bags and tubes and when I am at cons with a full bag I use a Wireless Vibration Motion Sensor with a key fob makes a ton of noise as soon as my bag is lifted /opened/kicked, etc.
None of these items cost much each less than or around 20.00 way less than the cost of just one deck's box and sleeves much less the cards themselves.
GPS Tags
If your worried about the art fading or the sleeves being bad quality then I suggest you grab some of these KMC outer sleeves https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZBRHRSA/
If your sleeves are standard size then these will go over the top of them, protecting the art and making bad sleeves shuffle better. I've been using these to protect my low quality sleeves for years now and haven't had any issues with them breaking.
The only problems I have had with them are that they make your deck T H I C C. So thicc that if used on a commander deck, you have to shuffle the deck in two halves.
Another one is that your deck wont really fit into many deck boxes any more. I don't really mind this problem because I use a whole gamegenic stronghold for my commander decks sleeved with these, but it may be a issue finding a big enough box if you don't want to drop $40 on a box for one deck.
The last problem that I can see someone having with these sleeves is when you properly double sleeve the art will be upside down. Not the end of the world but if you don't want the art to be from Australia then you can always double sleeve them the other way round.
Ive just got some "Art Focused" apps Ive been working on to a stage that other people might be interested in using them too, especially people into Magic Art (or any art!).
It’s a free iPhone and Android app and as well as livewallpapers it also supports static wallpapers together with a wallpaper editor and a few other goodies. :)
It doesn’t contain any wallpapers itself but you can load in any that are already downloaded to your phone or create yourself.
I was thinking of adding a creator of the month feature for anyone out there if there are any live (or static) wallpaper artists who have created something cool and would like it featured, let me know. :)
Anyway please let me know what you think and what features I should add next. :)
Its on the Apple App Store here and Google Play Store here.
Hope you like it and thanks for reading! :)
Maybe consider teaching them normal MTG than moving on to CMD. Here is the Arena starter kit -
10-15 bucks isnt a huge investment, and if they play Arena the game can teach them stuff like the phases of turns.
After that, if they want to continue, advise them to buy a precon - most are pretty good out of the box.
https://www.amazon.com/PPD-Creative-Adhesive-8-27x11-69-PPD-39-10/dp/B07F79W53F/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=PPD+Inkjet+Clear+Self-Adhesive+A4+-+10+Sheet&qid=1632943563&sr=8-3 these are the sheets I've used in the above video.
I would suggest you look online at a place like Amazon or at your local hobby shop kind of place that has magic cards. You could possibly find them at a place like Walmart as well but don't count on it.
I would personally recommend Dragon Shield for sleeve protectors.
(Classic Amazon Link) (Matte Amazon Link)
For me, it doesn't really matter what sleeves you get as long they are of standard size, don't easily fall apart, can double sleeve, the backs are opaque, and do not damage easily. For the deck box, all that matters for me is what you want to fit in it, whether you want accessories or not and the size of the deck.
Card House Storage Box - with 12 800-Count Storage I use these, they’re pretty cheap and hold tons of cards! Boxes by BCW https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M3YVUDR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_NM0TQQ6G538ANM9ABKRX
Thanks for the response! This is actually what I was looking for, is what product I could use to do the double sleeving you mentioned. I bought Givotran penny sleeves, thinking they were comparable to the perfect fit inner sleeves you mentioned.
I'll buy those KMC ones and be good to go :D
Penny sleeved cards won’t fit in standard normal sleeves. They’ll be too big and baggy and won’t fit inside as the penny sleeve will likely be slightly longer and wider than a standard outer sleeve.
‘Double sleeving’ usually refers to using INNER SLEEVES along with normal sleeves (such as dragon shield) to further protect the card inside the sleeve, and hypothetically spill proof your deck (liquid can’t touch the card if there’s two barriers protecting it).
It’s all up to preference, but I have all my modern decks double sleeved and I’d seriously recommend using KMC inner sleeves, along with dragon shield matte (or classic) outer sleeves. I’ll post Amazon links for the best price on kmc inner sleeves since you said you use amazon. Hope this helps.
For me to start off with I bought a Deck Builder's Toolkit and went from there. It has a good starting point for all the land you'll need and includes some good cards to start off. It doesn't have the best cards, but it's good to start your deck building with. This is the first one to come up on Amazon but you should be able to find it at any store that has MTG. Of course it depends on what set you're looking to start with, but it can be cheaper the further back in releases you go. I'm based on USD and not Euro so the prices may differ for you, but that's what I did and then just bought booster and drafts from there.
I suggest getting a few starter decks like these:
https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gathering-Planeswalker-Ready-Play/dp/B07V5XF8YQ
Play a little while and figure out what you like. From there you can modify your existing decks, or build a deck from scratch.
When buying complete decks, I suggest you go to your local game store. They usually have better prices and selection than big box stores like Walmart. Also my local game store has a ton of unsold stock from years and years ago and I find some interesting stuff for dirt cheap.
If you want to modify the decks or build from scratch, I recommend cardkingdom.com for singles
With something like these. 10 Pcs 25mm Gold Round Open Back Bezel Pendant Zinc Alloy Round Frame Pendant with 1 Loop for Jewelry Making https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NZV8RPG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_YGYEDRFR415K081FCQBK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Not the same ones I used
Repacks tend to take out the good cards, I’d recommend star city games 1000 card box here. Then once you figure out what you want to build and what strategies you like (I recommend only Sphinxes), buy singles on sites like card kingdom or tcgplayer. It’s alright to go a little booster crazy once in a while, but don’t use it as a way to find needed cards. I hope you have fun playing magic!
It's available for Android and iOS.
You can create creatures, instants, sorceries, enchantments, artifacts, artifact creatures, planeswalkers, lands and tokens for free :). There’s in-app purchase if you want to further create other cards, like sagas or adventures. This helps me continue the development and keep the app ad-free :).
I hope you like it!
Hi!, I'm the app developer.
Community here suggested this change because some play groups are used to associate left and right to minus and plus. So in order to keep everyone happy, now you can modify it to fit your preference :)
With this setting turned on, you can also swipe left or right to decrease or increase.
I really appreciate all the suggestions you are giving me to keep improving the app, thank you so much!
In case you haven't heard about the app, it has these main features:
• Commander EDH damage tracking
• Track poison, commander tax, experience, mana, storm and charge counters
• Up to 6 players
• Dark mode
• Match history and sharing
• Roll virtual dice
• Battery-friendly
• Intuitive gestures: tap, pan, long press
This was a very requested feature, I hope you like it :)
One of the boxes can be used for your life, and all the other ones for counters like poison, charge, mana, etc. It supports up to 6 counters to be seen at the same time, but you can access up to 42 by using the radial menu shown in the video.
I also added user defined starting life. I really appreciate all the feedback and will continue to improve the app based on your suggestions, thanks!! :)
Okay, well a good place to start from my experience with the game is with a way to play called commander, and actually next week they are releasing 2 pre-made decka that include everything each of you would need to play, and the set of both can be found for about 40 dollars on amazon. Here is the link. Amazon Also if 200 is your budget a booster box of the new set, zendikar rising can be had for about 100 dollars, or a set booster box is about 120, both on amazon. Either one would be a great choice to collect some cards and also there are many cards that can be used from the packs to put into the two decks.
