I started with this photo of the Spiral Oddessy sculpture by Richard Hunt installed earlier this year at Romare Bearden Park in Charlotte, NC. I processed the photo with Adobe Camera Raw and then cropped out the background and then replaced it with a Gaussian noise function. I then used Photoshop's liquefy and edge detect filters on the background and foreground, respectively.
