Just saw this.
If you are looking for a new OS I would try one of the Ubuntu variants. They all act the same, but look different. Lubuntu is lighter than standard Ubuntu and is better for old computers . https://lubuntu.me/
Xubuntu is also light and fast. Either are good, just try the one you like the look of more. https://xubuntu.org/
It is really easy to boot either of those from a USB stick and just try them without effecting anything on your computer.
It's so much worse when (due to COVID-19) the office is closed, and the only way to work is via some program that creates a remote desktop session in you're web browser.
Hmm that's interesting. What happens when you run a super basic program like this? ``` import pygame
I'm not sure what you mean by "seeing it as an interpreter". If you want, you can run it in the python interpreter in PyCharm by clicking "Python Console" on the bottom left of the screen. Then, type the following and press enter:
>>> import pygame
Either of these methods should produce the output:
pygame 1.9.6
Hello from the pygame community. https://www.pygame.org/contribute.html
``
if you instead get
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pygame'`, that means that you don't have PyGame installed for that version of Python. However, you shouldn't get that error if you followed the instructions I gave previously.
Is your system 32 bit? If so you'll need to use the 2018 versions as PyCharm current version only supports 64 bit.
(Hi, I'm a developer advocate on the PyCharm team.) Glad to see you recommending test-driven development! I did a [video+text+code tutorial](https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/guide/tutorials/visual_pytest/) for pytest+PyCharm+TDD. I'm interested in any suggestions you have for making it more accessible to beginners, as well as what I could do next for intermediate.
You've likely extracted pycharm to a folder not owned by your own user. I would start the process over. Download the pycharm tarball from https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/download/#section=linux
Then try something like DONT USE SUDO:
mkdir ~/opt
tar -xvf ~/Downloads/pycharm-community-2020.1.tar.gz -C ~/opt
cd ~/opt/pycharm-community-2020.1/bin
./pycharm.sh

It appears then that you have either a EAP (Early Access Program) or the education verison. https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/206544709-Register-menu-is-disabled-cannot-enter-the-license
I would redownload the professional version from https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/download/download-thanks.html?platform=mac and see if you can register that one.
