This sounds like the SSD inside the Nucleus is dying. Try unplugging the SSD and then connecting your hard drive. Using Roon Remote under Settings -> Storage add the hard drive as a folder. If everything works the SSD may be failing. You can determine this by connecting it to a PC with something like this Link if it is just a 2.5 inch SATA SSD and checking Crystal Disk Info to see if it has failed. If you could state the brand and type of SSD you have eg Samsung or SATA/M.2 (nvme) that would help diagnose. My best guess is you have a bad SSD and that is causing Roon to hang.
Possible, yes. What Roon recommends, probably not. If you use rclone’s mount argument with VFS enabled, files will cache to disk while in use (Roon finding and analyzing the files for the first time or you listening to them). Be sure to set the --vfs-cache-max-size
so that the cache directory doesn’t grow past the slice of local disk you want to be used to cache files when accessed.
I’ve not had the best luck with new files being picked up in real-time by Roon on my macOS core with an rclone mount so that’s the one downside I’d share. You’ll have to force a scan of the directory if you want something that was just added to be added to Roon. It’s worth not needing 1TB of local storage for my library though.
