It’s a trail marker. Dates back to Native American practices. I’d guess this one is younger than all that. https://roadtrippers.com/stories/mysterious-bent-trees-are-actually-native-american-trail-markers
I use a downspout extender, cut it down the side, wrap around tree. https://www.amazon.com/WholesalePlumbing-Supply-Downspout-Extension-Connector/dp/B08J9BBJBF/ref=asc_df_B08J9BBJBF/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=475788616966&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12750230548523050017&hvpone=&hvptw...
I used "Compare-N-Save Systemic Tree and Shrub Insect Drench" and it says "up to 12 months or protection". No further details provided in instructions about how long it lasts. Perhaps this is a case of just following the instructions and doing it once per year?

Looking at buying a fixer upper home and I'm concerned with these two trees. (https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOnu0lzCfN5FOk_7t620Nz8dBhwmkQ5rG6sJDpTkFSLw9_HVLx84XIq9IqBOe432w/photo/AF1QipNcbO8Bys2HJjfKWUnuoFUm7hUeQJckaZJrGuKj?key=MjNoZ1ZlcEpmanlyc3ZWNWZOekF3N1c0OElveUNR)
Just trying to get an ID on them so I can look into the removal process (or trimming, if good) if they're too close to the home in case of a hurricane or heavy winds.. Thanks.

Still going to make an attempt, I'll look for some damaged samaras where the hull might have been compromised & we'll try to cut one open to search for an embryo.
Exerpt from Amazon seller offering 12 seeds for $10
"Germination The seeds need scarification, so soak them in hot tap water and let them stand in water for 24 / 48 hours. Place seed in baggie with moistened medium (peat and sand) and warm stratify for 120 days. Check the seed coat as the outer layer should be easy to remove. Sow 7 mm deep in moist peat/sand mix and cold stratify (or place baggie in fridge) for 120 days. They will germinate under spring like conditions so after the cold period move them where the temperature is about 20C. If the seed coat is too hard, it may take 2 years for the seed coat (or skin) to soften enough for the embryo to escape. If you allow the stratified seed to dry out, it will kill the embryo. The seed should germinate in 30-365+ days. It can take longer, up to 2 years, so don’t give up. Be patient!"
I would suggest a book for you: Pruning and Training
This and the American H. Society Plant Propagation
These books are bibles for your garden. I have loved mine for years, and when I have a question that I need answered, between these and the Sunset Western Garden books are about all you will ever need.
The way it was staked before was according to an agricultural extension diagram and it was using nylon straps; I used this stuff https://smile.amazon.com/WXJ13-Garden-Supports-Staking-Strength/dp/B07SQP4VS4. The nylon straps kind of disintegrated when I pulled on them when I was relocating the stakes. the Nylon straps are pretty much impossible to tie into a knot because they're wide and flat so I had to loop around the tree and come back to the stake to staple it on. Could I wrap the area on the trunk where the paracord is contacting the trunk with the nylon strap instead?
Not sure if you do much online shopping but I found it on amazon for $99 shipped brand new.
Just realized it's only 5th edition but still has great info in it. https://www.amazon.com/Westcotts-Plant-Disease-Handbook-Kenneth/dp/146847684X
Ditto in the ISA. order the arborist study guide. Order this book... The Tree Climber's Companion: A Reference And Training Manual For Professional Tree Climbers https://www.amazon.com/dp/0615112900/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fPgnxb0SJSK4V
Also lots of tree climbing/arborist groups on the Facebook. Instagram is filled with arborists sharing knowledge as well. Reddit is kind of lacking in the arborist world. Hard to Reddit in trees.
If its a hybrid, its likely another maple...maybe even two different bred cultivars of silver maple. Poplars are in the willow family thus not comparable with maples...or in my neck of the woods, we only have tulip poplars which are in the magnolia family.
That thing is a piece of shit. I get angry even looking at mine I ordered last week. It only reads moisture levels but they threw a pH scale on the reading without a separate needle and call it a pH meter.
Since you don't need exact accuracy for scientific recording or anything, this should be adequate for your needs:
http://www.amazon.com/Luster-Leaf-1612-Rapitest-Tester/dp/B0001LEPYA
I use that kit around the farm regularly to make sure I don't have any strong pH swings. It will tell you the pH between 4.5 and 7.5 with roughly .5 precision. Just use distilled water!
It looks relatively small. To keep a nice, moist but not wet environment you could look into buyg a treegator bag You fill it up and it realeases 20 gallons over the course of like 8 hours.
gun nut and motorcycle nut. I buy a ton of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000DZF7T6/
Cheap enough that if I lose a set, i won't get upset, but they are good enough that I can still hear, but protects my hearing from wind noise while riding, and gunfire when shooting.
Having extras is always a good idea, last time I was on a group ride, one of the riders forgot his and was getting windblown, so I gave him a set.
