They are not much different from a normal, high boot pattern except for some specific details which are not really part of the pattern (more like finishing.) So, any book explaining patternmaking (first co come to mind is Le cordonnier moderne, by Yernaux) should have it. But, actually there are not that many books explaining patternmaking in thorough detail: best would be asking for a course/special class by a cowboy boot maker.
If you can find a cheap copy of Handmade Shoes for Men by Vass it would give you an overview. The only reason I don't recommend it highly is because it is thin on technical information. It does have good pictures of the process though.

It's mostly preventive, but holes are guaranteed to form after 8 months. I have a condition which makes usually walk with more pressure on the toe area.

Would spreading a thin layer of that in the area that always gets gets the hole be ok? Getting Crepe rubber would be an extra $8 that I'd like to avoid.

My professor recommended a bench grinder with a belt sander attachment. It’s more compact and does the same job. Plus you can have buffing wheels on the other side. bench grinder with belt sander attachment.

It’s off Amazon it was on sale for 145 when I got it. Not the best quality machine, But it does the trick and I used it to changed a couple swooshes on some of my shoes.
