Succulents don't last long in terrariums. The moisture and humidity make them rot. They thrive with open air and good drainage that allows water to actually leave the dish entirely.
Edit: if you're going to do it anyway I like something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073Z5JFSZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_jY6sBb2X0MG1C
H Potter Wardian Case Terrarium 504 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C4E9O2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_dGyhAb19WXHTP
Quite pricey though. There are some others from the same company (H Potter) also on Amazon for <$100.
I got these 1 gallon glass jars from Amazon for fermentation but you could totally use them for a terrarium. 4 for $30 seemed like a pretty good price to me. That is, if you think you could use 4 of them. The lids are plastic so they won't be as pretty as a glass top, though.
Paksh Novelty 1-Gallon Glass Jar Wide Mouth with Airtight Plastic Lid - USDA Approved BPA-Free Dishwasher Safe Mason Jar for Fermenting, Kombucha, Kefir, Storing and Canning Uses, Clear (4 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DWR75W8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_EPQ0AbVXS1GVD
I will start making the substrate in a day or two and add it as it is ready. I will also start with the hardscape but need to cut some logs a bit more to fit. Once done I will add them to the tank. After that I will start planning the layout and plant the plants. I am still thinking on how to deal with the orchid and and want to get some more. The environment is ideal for them :)
I have a temperature and humidity sensor (an AM2302) inside that is coupled to a raspberry pi and I collect the data. I have it only for approximately 2 days currently but I think it is quite representative of what will happen (the vivariaum is in a room that have very little temperature fluctuations during the seasons). More importantly is seeing how the humidity is affected when I turn on the humidifier and for how long it needs to run (want 80-100% humidity as I intend to keep dart frogs - but will get these only in a few months). I will start testing today but I think the humidity remains quite constant when everything is kept closed and will write a script to turn on the humidifier for a few minuted if the humidity drops below a threshold - then I will play with the time to see how long to turn it on (will do the same with the heating). I also have extractor fans that will run once a day to bring in fresh air and would need to compensate for the loss in humidity... but all this is quite exciting to test and tweak.
I do share the data publicly on thinkspeak and you are welcome to have a look at it here: https://thingspeak.com/channels/436974 The scale will probably fluctuate over the next few days as well as the values as I open and close the doors when planting and testing etc. It is however quite obvious when I added the glass doors and turned on the humidifier for the first time.
Sure, I just posted a pic to this sub. The mosses on the Buddha were originally painted on with the yogurt method. IIRC, I chopped the moss up on a cutting board instead of using a blender. They’re all semi-aquatic. Regarding the peat gravel, I used the product in the link below. You can get it in the aquarium section of petsmart or petco. It’s sold to go in a filter to soften water, promote acidity, and add tannins, but you can use it as a growing medium for moss.
I bought the container on Amazon. It came with a really short chain so I made that longer rope to hang it from.
I’m not gonna light it though, because although you can’t see it in the pic, there is a window about 10 inches to the left of where it hangs. I’m hoping that will be enough.
Mini Terrarium Plants (2 Plants)... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076652LML?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I got the red nerve plant like in the picture. I’m not sure if it’s a random shipment of small plants but it may be worth asking the seller if they can include a nerve plant. (Not sure if you can ship to your state either )
Hope this helps.
You have to sign up. Our class was completely full and he said it was the most popular terrarium class in the US. This is the link to the Groupon that I used. It gives you a $25 credit towards your glassware but they are mason jar sized. If you want a bigger one, you will have to pay, but it is worth it!
check Amazon. Search for “3.5” cork”. here’s what I found when I ran the search. Look at the dimensions. That SHOULD be just what you need. I bought something similar. You’ll want a tapered cork meaning the bottom is slightly more narrow than the top so you get that snug fit. I haven’t received mine yet but will this week. I hope this helps.
Any LED grow light is fine. I got these for my terrariums awhile back and they have worked out well.
At the time when I purchased mine it was much cheaper but here it is nonetheless:
Starlight Natural Charcoal 6.6 lb 100% Natural (3) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V6LB48K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_XkFSFbS3FH2Z5
I bought 2 sets of tools off amazon, from this 3 pack I use these 2 tweezers for most everything, the scissors are kinda crappy though: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Y9ZGYMK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also bought this set, however because they're so big the only thing I've used them on is the wine bottle. even then when inserted, the neck would push them closed. Since I couldn't get them to release I resorted to dropping things in and nudging them around into place. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EFYG5HS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
its This one. but i found it locally for 1/2 the price of Amazon!
I got one in my order from this
Mini Terrarium Plants (6 Plants) (2" Pots) Fairy Garden Plants Assorted Varieties https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GBBZN8D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-NhqFb8V1ZMV0
I also recently saw it at my local garden store. They must be in the right season for them so you might get one if you order.
I used long tongs (see below) to move things around mostly. For dropping soil/dirt in at the correct area, I uses a big straw (like the one for bubble tea lol). Putting the small ferns/plants in the right place took a bit of time, I did that first after a thin layer of soil, then put more soil on top of the roots or just push them down.

This is another one I've gotten, and you can choose from various GPH models
of course! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09CKVX4DR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share these are the ones i have and its really convenient having both straight and angled ones for all different shapes of containers
Grab yourself some chef- plating tweezers. Try to find a pair that has a bit of a bend in them, which will give you more angles to work with when placing things. Like these ones: https://www.amazon.com/Mercer-Culinary-M35236BK-Precision-Plating/dp/B077NSXJ1B/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=2L4F3S1WVU9CF&keywords=chef+plating+tweezers&qid=1667711159&sprefix=chef+plating+twee%2Caps%2C321&sr=8-4
Also he use peat and keto soil as i remember ,and spaghnum moss i think(i havent watch his videos for so long). Also for the net that he is using you can use bugs net i think=)
been a few years but i think This is a similar pot. i just mounded dirt in, put the epiweb with hygrolon in the center supported by a wooden chopstick, and then planted. i water it every now and then because its not fully sealed and has drainage holes at the bottom of the tray.
That’s an oil & vinegar cruet!
That's beautiful! I wonder how a doorway or portal or a ruin would look at the top of those steps.. Something like this aquarium decoration, but smaller (the thing I linked weighs almost two pounds, but the shape is neat)
Those steps have me looking at the neighbor's slate roof and my ladder.
I think I'm even starting to recognize plants. Fittonia, pepperomia meridiana, peperomia verticillata?
Slate rock, I purchase all of mine from Small world slate and stone. They have their own website but I linked the amazon listing for the 1-3 inch bag they sell. Five pounds for $20, really good quality as well.
I basically created larger Terras for my wedding and used these as remote lighting 😊

Substrate
I'm going to continue to prune and shape it to fit the terrarium. part of the fun :)
I actually used something marketed for Bettas 🙄 it's a .9 gal and has no room for any filter or heater. I gave it a one star review and stated inappropriate marketing and why. It's actually perfect for a terrarium and comes with a light and lid! Not a sealed lid, though. And I added the plastic separator. Here's the link, bonus if you leave a one star review for crap marketing.

No it’s kind of a plastic reusable cling film, similar to this- https://www.amazon.co.uk/PHYLES-Containers-Alternative-Non-Toxic-Dishwasher/dp/B07TTBM2X1/ref=mp_s_a_1_10?keywords=reusable+cling+film&qid=1656918414&sr=8-10
Parafilm could work though
The flask is covered with a plastic “reusable cling film” for now, not this one, but something similar to this-
So for the one in the left I simply have a 1/8 inch thick circle of acrylic sheet balanced on top, actually works pretty well! I bought the circles off Etsy somewhere and they weren’t too expensive. For the flask I have a kind of reusable cling film, it’s not this exact one but it’s something similar to this- https://www.amazon.co.uk/PHYLES-Containers-Alternative-Non-Toxic-Dishwasher/dp/B07TTBM2X1/ref=mp_s_a_1_10?keywords=reusable+cling+film&qid=1656918414&sr=8-10
The flask is just a temporary measure for now but actually works pretty well too
Personally, I never seal any of my terrariums completely, but I do use Aqueon Aquarium silicone, for leaks, which is completely safe for plants and animals.
I ordered my springtails off Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WLHZP34?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) I would definitely recommend them they shipped fast and I had a healthy population a week after they arrived once all the eggs hatched. Also, if they don’t survive after they arrive, they will ship you a new box for free.
What about this? I just hate the idea of plastic in my terrarium.
Hamiledyi Reptile Carpet Natural Coconut Fiber Tortoise Carpet Mat for Pet Terrarium Liner Reptile Supplies for Lizard Snake Chamelon Turtle Bedding Bunny Rabbit Mat (2sheets) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077SSZ3DG/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_9X1CG9YD1RTJDTZZBV5T
So for this terrarium, it's working great, I actually purchased:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09CTH5ZW9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
And it worked great! I had to 3D Print a little clip for it to hold it to that bookcase. Whats great about this light is it has a timer in it, this terrarium's in our bedroom so I especially want it to go on / off at given times.
If you live near a Lowe's hardware store, they will cut the acrylic exactly to your measurements for free. I use Lowe's all the time for plexiglass.
Alternately, I use these 11.75" square clear glass cutting boards (seller has different sizes), for the tops of several reptile terrariums I use for plants. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B3GI8BC/
Prefer reptile terrariums because of the screen top, which allows the plants and soil circulation of fresh air. The screen tops hold in humidity pretty well. I place the glass on top of the screens, when they need humidity and take them off when they need an airing out. :)
its this one!
This thing!: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DVFBVPF/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_i_dl_KNY2MMSMGV54EFW13EZY?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I like it because it connects right to my phone or computer and displays the image there, so multiple people can view it at the same time and i can record photos and videos.
Thank you!
You can use a cafeteria tray in the bottom. Remember the "outside" dimensions are 20 x 20 inches, so you need to find an 18" tray (this one is expensive, but would work well).
I use clear acrylic organizers as underliners on many of my plants. They work beautifully and don't detract from the setup because they are clear.
The height of mine is only 9 inches, but if I am not mistaken, the smaller table you linked, is only 5.5 inches high, which is a drawback and the reason I use mine for micro plants.
Zilla Front Opening Terrarium - 8" x 10" x 15"
After the new year, the prices of reptile terrariums went absolutely wild. I use the above for some ferns. Own more than 50 terrariums of all shapes, sizes and brands.
I cant believe as well 😊
Im using this kind of light
TORCHSTAR LED Indoor Herb Garden,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0827SD63S?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
But recently i upgraded to 7000k spectrum. But still same design light. It grew faster with higher light spectrum
I have a hygger 22W 24/7 that does the sunrise/moonlight thing, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08N197NGW/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_55YQ816MNVFNYW2Y5PXQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1, and some supplemental lighting from this one (off for my pics as the pink light didn't make for great photos) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08T1T45V1/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_F7S15ZFVDKXEXM79GPZH?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 . I don't use all 4 heads of the pink light, 2 seem to be enough for the tank to be happy. The other 2 heads light up smaller jar terrariums and a disco ball planter off to the sides.
If you want to seal them without opening to spray or anything you will need an air sealing jar like thisnot one with a cork lid.
Not sure why it’s not showing up. I’ll try again:

Not OP but it could be something like this which I did not know existed but now must have.
Are you thinking about your specific climate? They're stored at 40 degrees, which means I can order and release them in my greenhouse now. Or could it be something about their reproduction that you're saying may?

Thank you, this is a hygger fixture. I like these because they have built in timers, are fairly affordable, and seem to have a good spectrum for plant growth.
I just used “systemic houseplant insect control” to manage my fungus gnats and they were gone after the first watering.
It is not meant for edible plants and should be used with caution around children and pets but it was recommended by my local nursery and I saw it recently suggested for use when you are replanting to help prevent future pests from occurring.
If I may, I would like to EXPAND on this awesome setup from /u/41PH4B3T50UP.
If you are worried about forgetting to turn the lights on or off, or if you're thinking about travelling this tip may help you out. Building and taking care of a terrarium is supposed to be a peaceful experience. With that I mind, I bought a 2 pack of this "Teckin Smart Plug", and used it to plug the lamp above (with a USB to outlet adapter from an old phone).
There are many brands of the same plug, but regardless of what you buy, make sure the brand / model supports "Scheduling". I just set my schedule from 9AM to 4 PM to start, meaning it will go off after 4PM and turn back on again at 9 AM. This is incredibly useful for leaving your terrarium on auto-pilot.
I hope this helps someone else, and wasn't common sense :D
Thank you so much!!!
Of course i wouldnt mind sharing:)

They're NICREW SkyLED Plus aquarium lights (here on Amazon), but I'm going to change them out for Arcadia Jungle Dawn LED light bars. They were good enough to get my plants off the ground in the beginning, but I think I need something a little stronger for this size of tank with denser foliage.

Hi everyone! I've been planning on making a jewel orchid terrarium but before i got to that i received this (in the pictures) glass terarrium with a ficus ginseng, but it broke :( so i have some questions!
-Can i put the ficus in the same terrarium as the jewel orchid (do they have similar needs?)?
if so, is a closed or open terarrium better? Or doesn't it really matter?
(for just the orchid:) would this be a good substrate for a jewel orchid in a terarrium : Seramis orchid substrate
-what potting mix would be suitable for the ficus and the red plant (second pic) in a terrarium (cant use most of the original stuff bc of glass shards)
Thanks!!

I like this one by govee. I have a couple of them. I know that they work with Alexa and they have an app
You would have to add a light INSIDE the bottle because the green of the bottle filters out too much light for the plants to thrive. They have these USB lights that give off 6000k but not sure if you can fit them in the wine bottle opening.
It did come pre-sealed. Which is great because I have tremors and my lines would look crazy if I tried! here it is
So far, it's been sitting on my desk for 3 months and the mounting tape and light itself show no signs of degradation, but I'll continue to monitor. Here are the ones I bought:

Something very similar to this. Google adjustable gooseneck tattoo LED, and they should come up
Btw, if you wanna use them on a timer, be careful of what kind of switch they come with, some of the 'dimmable' ones have to be manually turned on (found that out the hard way..)

First of all, thank you so much!!! I really appreciate it :)
I used new zealand tree fern tropical background for the background. Its a is soft, porous and spongy, long lasting, and has fantastic moisture holding abilities. These natural products – tree fern panels and fibre, have a much larger surface area than many other substrates, which means its capacity to retain moisture is much greater.
I bought in amazon, here is the link

On a couple of them im using 5000k under cabinet light bars to supplement because they get good morning sun first.
On two others I have a basic full spectrum grow light that you can find on Amazon. Not sure of the specs but here it is. There are so many out there and different shapes and all that stuff but this one worked for me. I haven't had mine long enough to know how long the batteries last. But the fact they can be turned on remotely and set to timer means you can often have them off

Here is a vid about false bottom. The only difference in what he does in the video and what I do is that I add a layer of wet (soak and then squeeze out as much water as possible) of sphagnum moss after the charcoal and before the substrate. He does this in other videos later on.
Nylon screen or fiberglass screen mesh is more like the thing that screen doors are made of. Like this this .
He mentions the depth of each layer in the vid as well.
I have this one for my terrarium. I love it because it has a base for accidental spillage. I highly recommend.

The rocks you can see are called Seiryu stone. (I think they’re imitation as the authentic is impossible to get.) It’s used a lot in aquascaping. To get the height I put some large rocks from the yard in with the gravel before adding soil to take up some space without having to use up more materials. Then compacted the soil on top to make it easier to balance the pieces I selected.
Not all pieces look alike. You kind of have work with what you get. I spent some time playing around with the layout before building this setup. Even then I changed some things afterwards. You can see the difference if you look where the pump is in my post history.
Light for anyone that’s curious I actually really like the features of this light. It’s programmable and has an auto 24 hr light cycle. Rather inexpensive as far as tank lighting can go. Just seems a bit strong for the moss varieties I currently have
Tank is a Mr Aqua 12 gallon long
Terrarium inhabitants include 3 slugs (somewhat responsible for decimating the upper section of plant life), several pill bugs, one centipede, and a rather large earthworm I just discovered early this morning. I hope to add spring tails at some point but i worry about the flooding.
I’ve played around with keeping the lights off but that encouraged a lot of mold growth. So now I’m experimenting with what survives and letting that flourish. I truly know nothing about moss. All of these varieties have been sampled from my yard.
The setup of the tank was a rather quick DIY as I was bored and sad that I had to close down my ponds for the winter. This brought a bit of life and moving water into my home. There are a few things I would do differently. The style of pump makes covering the outlet a bit awkward. So I might design things a bit differently. Also the water doesn’t flow so well in the bottom area. I’d shape the liner to direct in more towards the pump inlet. Because there is no pre-filter on the pump, sediment will occasionally get through. The tube itself is getting some mud and muck in certain sections. Eventually it will have to come out and be flushed or replaced.
I’ll try to answer all of your questions as they come. Thank you so much for your interest. And sorry for filming the crappy way! I’m not a big social media fan and didn’t realize until I posted.
Thanks! Here's the link to amazon . I'm really impressed with the quality of it and highly recommend.
I have some long tweezers that I use for aquascaping that make it a little easier. When trying to adjust the plants and put the moss exactly where I wanted I wrapped some paper towel around the tweezers to make them have a bigger surface area to push them into place. I imagine chopsticks would work well for that part. Link to the set, I have below. Really affordable and worth it if you plan on doing more terrariums.

LEDs will work well. Amazon has plenty of grow lights I'll leave a link for a light that I use for one of my terrariums. I like it because it has a built-in time and can do different intensities

I was on a waitlist to purchase mine for a couple months before they came back in stock in September. The light I got from amazon. I really like that’s a white light not the pink ones you often see for grow lights. https://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-FLF27D-Desktop-Plant-27-Watt/dp/B008UZJQMA/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=desktop+plant+light&qid=1602964991&sprefix=desktop+plant+&sr=8-3

Hoffman Horticultural charcoal soil conditioner.
Washed some medium sized rocks found in my yard for bottom planter drainage and also for top accents.
Plants found at local market. 🙂
Try searching for "decorative round bottom flask with stand"
This product on Amazon isn't exactly the same, but it's similar.
Here is a link to the container on Amazon. Terrarium Container I had to use some silicone to seal the edges as it doesn't come sealed, so make sure you do that or you'll have a wet table :P
I have used used the yellow sticky pads and Orange Oil. I specifically used "Medina Orange Oil", and ordered it from Amazon. Did a couple of spray applications, and some light watering in. They usually live on the top portion of the soil so you don't really need to give the whole thing a soaking.
You know, I wish I could answer your question. It's the middle of a pretty harsh winter up here so I'm not able to source any plants locally. I got this little variety pack off of Amazon (and it doesn't name the different species): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GBBZN8D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I found it on Amazon! There was also a silver option.

Low lying one and the little egg capsule looking one are from Ikea. The sphere bell I coupled with a petri dish, and both are from Amazon. The base for the sphere is unfinished wood. I just spray-painted mine black.
