That's kinda brilliant actually. Makes good use of the phone's keyboard haha!
Even better for typing umlauts is Blackberry Keyboard app. Simply create a customised SYM layout to pop up when hitting SYM. This way you can type by SYM + letter innstead of selecting your umlaut from touchscreen. Alternatively, you can use my app, which provides pre-built keyboard layouts for e.g. German with symbol layer when pressing SYM + letter but has no on-screen feedback for which character to expect on which key. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.fjdrjr.titanqwerty
App is now in Playstore, check it out here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.fjdrjr.titanqwerty
+ added a US layout which only has additional Symbols
+ added a Cyrillc phonetic layout
+ added support for Unihertz Titan (original)
Answering my own question ... there's an app Extra Physical Keyboard Layouts, which does that.

I've also re-mapped the Fn key as Ctrl key and now I can switch. I still can't type some characters like Ч, Ш, Щ, etc, but I'm getting closer :)
