There is the traditional snipping tool built into windows that should be available to you if that is your preferred OS, but one that I have found particularly useful is an open source / free application that has version for pretty much every flavor:

Its a bit more complicated than the regular windows snipping tool and your method, but I have found it pretty handy from time to time.
