honestly, i've tried many many adblockers. adblock, adblock plus, ublock, ublock origin, ghostery and more.
before you judge, maybe look into what makes 1blocker so great. it comes with a solid review. and a few dollars one time fee is worth it to me, considering it works substantially better than all the other ones i've tried.
My understanding is that YouTube ads currently can not be blocked do to the limitation with the tools Apple gives developers for content blocking. one difference is Apple content blockers should have no invisibility into anything you're looking at while JavaScript based ones like uBlock Origin technically can see everything although I trust uBlockO. while the advantages are vast on what you can do uBlock Origin it isn't a native Safari blocker thus it's not optimized for Safari.
>YouTube preroll video ads are very difficult to block properly given current tools provided to native Safari content blockers by Apple. 😞 The reason is because preroll ad URL source is indistinguishable from main video URL. However, we’re keeping our eyes on it. We understand how popular YouTube is, so this may get resolved in future versions of the app.
Apple based content blockers absolutely work, Safari does the blocking according to the developers rule sets, I believe. the only Safari content blocker I've found that absolutely makes no connections whatsoever and is open source is (Better Blocker.)
PS, don't use Ghostery
Just a reminder that Safari tries to disable cross site tracking. https://www.apple.com/safari/
Also, Safari for iOS and macOS can have content blockers that block client side advertisers/trackers. I like 1Blocker. https://1blocker.com
Having multiple blockers installed has a pretty decent chance of breaking some web pages. I'm sure you already know this.
The best blocker to do what you want is 1Blocker. It is unfortunately not free, but I don't know of any free product that does everything you want.
That's interesting. I thought 1Blocker had a free version everywhere. Even on their website they say "Start using for free". Here in my regional App Store, I can activate any one category and the 1Blocker extension for free. As for AdGuard, I have pretty much every feature enabled except DNS level blocking enabled. It's interesting how policies vary from region to region.
Pi-Hole indeed is great. I've read that even the Pi W can be used to run Pi-Hole.
I've been using NextDNS on my devices for the last few days and I have hardly seen any ad on apps where I normally would see ads. NextDNS doesn't seem to have cosmetic filtering though.
I don't think that you can block ads on Youtube except by paying what Youtube ask for that privilige.
For other things I recommend this blocker. Works wonderfully and can do an awful lot on our Macs.
Not possible if using the official YouTube app (assuming iPhone or Android).
I use iPhone with an adblocker (1Blocker) which blocks Youtube in-video ads in Safari.
It's possible using Opnsense would also prevent video ads from loading in Safari, but I haven't tested this.
if you’re on a laptop/desktop, i know chrome & firefox have all kinds of add-ons to block trackers. if you’re on a mobile ios device, 1Blocker is the best $5 i spend each year. 1Blocker will block cookies/trackers in safari, or any third party apps that display a website inside the app using safari (ie instagram swipe-ups). it won’t block instagram or facebook’s native ads tho.
Sorry, i mixed up iOS & macOS; The issue i described only exists on iPad and iPhone... here's a screenshot where you can see the groups: https://1blocker.com/img/screenshots/iphone-1.png
You're right, in macOS you can enable/disable "eu cookie notices" as a separate item in 1Blocker.
Check out Lockdown – it's pretty new, but offers some very compelling features.
I've used 1blocker X for a couple years and found it works quite well.
No one seems to be answering your question, but if you're on Android you can install a plugin with your browser. But if you're on iPhone you can use 1Blocker, or another similar app. I use 1blocker and it blocks 99% of all the adds.
Mostly, yes. Moreover, having more than one ad blocker will impact the speed of your browser.
I don't know any of the apps in your screenshot specifically. I use 1Blocker, which also exists for Mac. It's a very fast and reputable blocker. Some ad blocks are notorious for either "leaking" paid ads, or collecting and selling data about your browsing habits.
Regarding Safari loading time: you do know that you can install content/ad-blocket extension for Safari. Go to the App Store and search for content blocker. If you don't mind paying, get 1Blocker.
Once you've installed a content blocker, make sure you've install the Share Sheet option for whitelisting. And in cases where you do want to reload without content blocking (some sites block content blocker) but don't want to resort to whitelisting, tap on the reload symbol in the address bar (the top right of Safari screen), and you will get the option.
