r/IDM is playing all of my old favs today!
Edit: If anyone is interested in James Holden's music, especially "The Idiots are Winning", most of the production was done on Jeskola Buzz machines (http://jeskola.net/buzz/), a free tracker with modular virtual instruments. Super fun to play with.
As mentioned in another similar thread, as free music software goes I'm partial to Jeskola Buzz. The interface can be off-putting at first (although one big advantage is that the interface is very light on processing power) and there is a steep learning curve (somewhat alleviated by all the tutorials you can find online, especially on youtube) but it is very versatile and also completely free and open source. You can find it here : http://jeskola.net/buzz/
Many of the links on the page linked above are useful, especially the forums if you are lost. Also, check this website if you want to download a ton of synths and effects for Buzz, all are entirely free : http://www.buzzmachines.com/
It's missing a some features present in other DAWs (audio editing is not built in) but it does everything I need it to. It is built with a tracker interface as opposed to a piano roll. The program is fairly stable and can do some things a lot better than other DAWs like 303 sequencing for example, and sidechaining and aux sends are the easiest of any DAW I've used. The support forum is active and new machines and features are being actively developed.

i used lmms briefly back in 2007. i revisited it again in 2013. having also used fl studio (on which lmms' UI is based), i didn't like either, but can't deny their power as tools.
i would recommend that you instead start with the modular tracker jeskola buzz and have a look around the forums. buzz is free and has an active, supportive community. there is a learning curve with any DAW, but for me the tracker and modular interface of buzz made the most sense.
I did something similar (with my voice), but a long time ago so I'm out of the loop, with Buzzmachines. Site has disappeared since but I found this: Buzz, and more suggestions here: AlternativeTo.
Hope that helps, at least to get you started.
They lost the source code and development just stopped in 2000. But I did some research an they started development again in 2008 and added all those features they promised back in 1997. http://jeskola.net/buzz/
Hi,
As this is my first post, a short introduction.
Around 25 years ago (jeez, I’m getting old) I started producing heavy techno, trance and hardcore (bonzai style) tunes. Back then I mostly used trackers (Fast Tracker 2 among others) and later on Buzz. Later on I also had a go with Reason and Fruity Loops. At the same time I started dj’ing with vinyl on “the wheels of steel” (Technics SL1200’s) and became quite good at it (had a few gigs, won a dj contest,…).
But then live hit me. Girlfriends and later on wife, work, a house, kids... you know... So no more music production or dj’ing for years.
Quite recently I started dj’ing again, almost by accident. So I guess that was also the moment to start producing some new tracks. About a year ago I bought a Maschine MK3 and had a go at it.
I found the Maschine on itself a great tool to create loops and experiment. The sounds and instruments included were a big bonus. But for laying out a track, I struggled enormously. So I bit the bullet and after trying out several DAW’s, I bought FL Studio (aka Fruity Loops).
Anyway... I always loved pumpin’ techno tracks, so I had a go and finally finished a track. I myself always loved tracks from Green velvet, Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, The Advent, Surgeon,… and nowadays I Hate Models, Tommy Four Seven, Amelie Lens,...
As I said, this was done with Maschine MK3 (rhytmn section, and main bass sound). All other sounds, automation and mixing was done in FL Studio using a Beyer Dynamic DT770 pro on Mac.
To be honest, I think the sound is a but to full and muddy, as I always tend to end up with. My mastering skills are not that good I’m afraid. But it has the feel and vibe I was looking for. Hard, straight on, and a bit retro perhaps.
Thanks for your time and feedback!

Enjoy. Or not :-)
I haven't made any full songs yet, but I love the sound of a piano, and I've been trying to make sense of Jeskola Buzz
I don't know how to play any instruments, and I just don't have the time or money to learn right now.
Edit: And I just realized I didn't even answer your question: I like to try and make trance music/remixes, such as this one.
Jeskola Buzz.
Hard to get into at first but very powerful, and there are plenty of tutorials online. It's extremely versatile, comes with hundreds of synths and effects already in and most of all, it's completely open source and free.
