For a moment I was really excited that citadel was having a new release . I've always enjoyed as an independent community platform, but unfortunately the other has stagnated. It still does have an active user community, but not a growing one.
i say Drive as you get chat and such with hangouts
but if you wanted local then how about <strong>Citadel</strong>
I had a instance of it running for awhile and it seemed pretty useful
Not sure if this is too "modern" for what you are looking for, but you could try citadel.
The original citadel was a popular BBS many years ago. I believe the current version is based off of the original BBS, but was re-written a while ago.
The project was the topic of a recent floss weekly episode as well.
No Citadel-86 or any variants running in Ottawa!? That for me was the best BBS to message folks at the time back in the Halifax BBS scene: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citadel_(software) The software has since evolved to our own day as Groupware: http://www.citadel.org/doku.php?id=screenshots (it even has the classic interface)
So, Citadel is maintained in this form:

There is a link on the download page to Source. I am guessing this can be compiled on OS/X and the only reason a package isn't available is because no one has taken the effort to create one.
What operating systems are supported?
> Citadel is intended to run on any Unix-like operating system. The primary development platform is Linux, running on 32-bit Intel. It is also known to work on Solaris (version 8 or newer), FreeBSD (version 6.0 or newer), OpenBSD (version 4.0 or newer), and Mac OS X (version 10.1 or newer).
The link to the source is currently broken. Probably you could just compile it if you nudge the Citadel gods to fix the link.
Zarafa is a Groupware comparable to Zimbra. Normally, when Zimbra is named, Zarafa isn't far (and the other way around). Third place does have more competition, I'd say it's either Sogo or Citadel. Perhaps Open X-change, but I admit I haven't kept up with their development and their website leaves a lot to be desired.
My thoughs exactly.
I personally found only one reaonable alternative to Gmail which is Citadel. Which apparently integegrates email, calendar, tasks and some other fucntionality which is eseential for me and is actually compatible with Android which is a big thing for me.
Although setup is not that simple it is something I will have to try setting up on my home server if I want to ever leave google.
This reminds me. I've been thinking about hosting a gmail replacement on my home server but I have yet to find a complete open-source or at least free solution that combines a number of functionalities that both gmail and MS Exchange provide like mail integrated with calendar, task management and project collaboration.
I've been looking into Citadel and Zimbara but the problem of my ISP interfering with proper DNS resolution of my email domain persists.
You could throw something like Citadel on a $5 VPS. I've used it before, it has a setup script that asks a few questions and then you have an email server. Go get a yourname.name domain for a few bucks a year and you're all set.

Personally I'd rather not have to deal with Exchange or O365 ever again. If you're such a small shop you have the ability to do this correctly from the start... and with NO LICENSING FEES!
Edit: You can use Outlook with either of these options
Ubuntu Server can help u in a lot of areas. VPN, Filesharing, Printing, Email etc.
As for user-management in a way that active directory (MS) does it. It is very hard to accomplish, using LDAP + Samba.
Samba 4 should offer relief, but it is still in development.
Regardless of servers, you should take a look at Citadel. I have no experience with it, but read a good review in Linux Format Magazine. Your request reminded me of it.
