I have been self-hosting CommaFeed for a while (https://www.commafeed.com/) and I think its awesome. It's simple and fast. It also works really well on mobile so no special apps needed.
When Reader shut down I made a very nice Reader clone as a Firefox extension -- it even included synchronizing between multiple computers. Then Firefox shut down extensions. Bastards.
Anyway, I'm not using CommaFeed which is essentially a Reader clone.
I recommend making your own RSS or content feed - I used Commafeed and it works pretty nicely for what I want (an overview of the headlines from various sources, nice and simple).

Commafeed: RSS reader
Try CommaFeed, almost exactly the same as Google Reader, and I don't think there are any limits to the number of subscriptions and it has a very similar Chrome/Firefox addon to Google Reader as well. Worked flawlessly for me.
