DoggCatcher does it for me. Worth the few bucks it costs on the android market.
DoggCatcher - for Podcasts, when it was on sale for like $3 and the money was being donated to Japan relief. I like it plenty.
Abduction World Attack - because my kids like it and I like to make my kids happy.
I use doggcatcher. the interface is easy to use, lets you make custom rule sets for downloads and deletes, and has a search feature that has never failed me- in other worlds you don't have to manually load the podcast address. Also, it has recommendations. Totally worth the 4.99
Doggcatcher's interface has been atrocious in the past. The developer acknowledged it and started fixing it last year [1]. It's gotten much better to use. And I've tried nearly all of the podcasting apps (BeyondPod, Acast, Google Listen). If they required buying to get all the features, I did. I considered it an investment into the Android marketplace.
DoggCatcher is a nice worry-free podcasting app. I do all my listening on my phone, so I don't need to worry about syncing it to any other device or app (a la Google Reader).
What you are looking for is a "Podcatcher" or aggregator.
The simplest is just browse to the podcast's page in your browser and stream the episode.
ITunes, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google/YouTube/Whatever Play/Music/Whatever also allow streaming and subscribing to podcasts, although they are less flexible platforms. They do have most of the popular podcasts on there though, so I expect you'll find Cautionary Tales on whatever your device's default streaming service they push on you is. This is probably your best bet if you are just checking out podcasts for the first time.
Personally, if you start listening to a lot of podcasts, using a dedicated podcatcher is warranted. A podcatcher will usually let you "subscribe" to a podcast, meaning it will check the podcast feed for new episodes in the background and then download them. It should also track which episodes you've listened to and where you are in them so that you can resume listening from where you left off.
Over the years I've used several different podcatchers, but since I got my first smartphone I've used DoggCatcher on Android. I like it, and it's what I'm used to. The one caveat to my recommendation is that I haven't used any other podcatcher's since I started using DoggCatcher. You can dig into setting and much around, but the default settings are decent enough, and you can subscribe to just about any podcast I can think of without needing to import the RSS address manually. Let me tell you about the early days.
As an alternative to the suggestion of Pocket Casts, Podcast Addict is free and supports intents. You could also ask the author(s) of DoggCatcher to implement a pause intent (maybe ask for an update).
You might be able to do something with AutoInput to press DoggCatcher buttons.
The two that I have, DoggCatcher (linking cause it's a little hard to find) and PocketCasts theoretically let you change the download directory. I can't test it though cause my HTC One doesn't have removable SD cards. Is that what you meant?
You might mean you swap SD cards a lot and want it to recognize the various ones automatically, in which case I dunno
it really is the best... but looking at the forums:
http://www.doggcatcher.com/node/1362
Eric the developer states (message #3):
"Feel free to try it out as long as you like, if you don't like it, send me an email and I can issue a refund."
Maybe you could send him an email and ask if it is okay to test first.
I lot of people seem to like BeyondPodcast too, but I found it to have the worst interface. I have tried the trial a number of times, and every time I have hated it.
EDIT: sorry.. I thought you were the OP.
I'm a longtime user of Doggcatcher - http://www.doggcatcher.com/. There is a one time small payment to purchase the app, but it is reliable, has excellent functionality, and is very customizable. Includes casting support, custom settings for each feed, custom sorting lists, you name it. All the other options mentioned in this thread are also great, but I didn't want Doggcatcher to be left out as overall I think it offers the best overall experience.
I was not clear. I'd like to subscribe to it in a podcast app, such as DoggCatcher. Does the church publish it as an RSS feed somewhere?
>1. It doesn't need that permission because it doesn't have the feature that Messenger does. It does, however, have full access to your network connection.
?
>You should let them know that then, because they say they do:
Was it not you who gave that response when I said DoggCatcher didn't need that permission?
Yes, from what you're explaining that is a little different than what DoggCatcher does. But don't tell me you didn't say DoggCatcher had this same permission when it doesn't.
I got fed up with Google listen/reader combo when there was an outage for 4-6 days last year with not explanation and no google employee monitoring the mailing list/discussion board.
So I bought DoggCatcher and haven't looked back since.
I know it is $7 bucks but, Buy it, if you don't like it the creator will issue you a refund: proof

I have never see Doggcatcher go on sale. With that said, Buy it, if you don't like it the creator will issue you a refund: proof
