I've been tinkering with Go (golang) a bit. Wrote a small utility in Go for my bookmarking/read-later web app EmailThis.
Now you can send a URL to and my app will extract useful content from it and reply in a few minutes. If you send a link to a downloadable file (PDF/doc etc), it will download it and send it as an attachment.
I am working on a tiny side project called Email This.
"Email This" lets you save ad-free articles to your email inbox. If you have come across an interesting article but don't have time to read it now, you can use this bookmarklet to extract just the text and images from that article (no ads, distractions) and send that to yourself as an email for later reading.
You can try it out here - https://www.emailthis.me
I have built the backend using Elixir/Phoenix. It is hosted on AWS using Dokku.
It's not self hosted but I use https://www.emailthis.me/ to email me pages. You could self host the email if you wanted. Obviously EmailThis is not self hosted but what's nice is that if it disapears off the face of the earth tomorrow, I still have my content.
And email is a perfect read-it-later medium. It's designed for organization, offline sync, search, etc.
I would love a self hosted emailthis part but I don't know of any at the moment.
This is the logo for my new side project called EmailThis - https://www.emailthis.me.
This is a simple "email me this webpage/article" service. It will extract useful content from a web page and send that to you as a nicely formatted email. Is this idea conveyed in this logo?
Any suggestions on how I can make this better would be much appreciated.
Purpose: Save ad-free webpages and articles to your email for later reading.
Email This is a simple email me this web page service. If you’ve found a great article but don’t have time to read it now, you can use Email This to send yourself a nicely formatted email with just the text and images from that article (without the ads, crufty sidebars, and distractions). You can then open up your email client and catch up with your reading list.
Technologies Used: Elixir, Phoenix framework, SCSS, JS (Readability.js)
Feedback Requested: Is the message conveyed clearly? Do you find utility in the idea/product? I would also appreciate your feedback on the design and execution.
Comments: This is a new side project that I have just launched. Please share your thoughts, suggestions, and critiques.
I had forgotten about Email This. You can email a link to the page (after setting up an account with Email This). It will then email you a "readable" view of the webpage and links are clickable. I haven't used it much but it looks promising.
Sorry for the issue that you faced.
Please use this link to install the bookmarklet - https://www.emailthis.me/#bookmarklet. After you type the email where you want to save articles, you'll be asked to confirm the email. Once that is done, drag the big blue 'EmailThis' button to your bookmarks bar. Please note that the left side of the screen has the animation, ignore that. I think that since that animation also has the same button, it gets quite confusing. I'll actually go ahead and remove that animation shortly.
not the solution you are looking for, but i use this (https://www.emailthis.me/) to email sites to me (extension in chrome, on mobile i can mail to [email protected] and it sends a nicely condensed email) that's not coming form me.
Second solution i use is the Rename mail extension in chrome.
Just some tips, although i hope they decide to keep inbox alive. It's allround better, faster and nicer.
First of all, Instapaper is really good but obviously not self hosted so I am guessing that is out.
I have been thinking about this and I am pretty convinced that the best answer is actually email! If you can email yourself an article, you have it backed up, fully archivable, easily done offline, searchable, etc. So for me personally, I want an self-hosted version of something like this.
Even if you use a non-self-hosted service to email you the page, you are no longer reliant on it for archive. It is certainly worth a thought.
Which chrome extension in particular?
Edit: think I found it
Source code is very large and minified. Chances of a port are slim, Google doesn't do Firefox addons.
You might be able to get the same workflow by using a bookmarklet like Gmail This, modifying it to put some unique string in the subject line and filtering your emails to go to the saved folder when they have that in the title.
There's also Email this which might help.
Yes, the only difference is that you don't need to install an additional app or log in to another service to access your bookmarks.
I've written about the differences here - https://www.emailthis.me/pages/faqs#instapaper-readability-alternative
Currently, this extension also creates a bookmarklet. If you are logged in to Chrome on Android/iOS, you can save articles from your mobile device using the steps mentioned here
From the top of my head, I can think of the Android/iOS app as a way to save articles from other apps like Medium etc. Is there anything else you would like to see in the app?
