This title claims that the "the global internet traffic dropped by 40%".
This is simply wrong. The number stams from "GoSquared", that claims that it trackes a sample of the population.
Please, read the original source for this, GoSquared: https://engineering.gosquared.com/googles-downtime-40-drop-in-traffic
> This had a huge effect in the number of pageviews coming into GoSquared’s real-time tracking – around a 40% drop, as this graph of our global pageviews per minute shows
GoSquared is something like Google Analytics, and their list of clients isn't all that impressive. The biggest websites in traffic (Google, YouTube, Twitch, Dropbox, ...) were not clients, and are not clients. I highly doubt that they are close to a representive sample.
If only Apple actually made those security updates available for previous macOS versions.
I'm not saying Apple should keep supporting Lion, but El Capitan is still used in about 34% of macs, and Yosemite in about 24%. Sauce. That would leave more than half of macs under risk.
As you can see in the sauce, Sierra adoption was great when launched, but for the last month it has almost gone flat. I'm guessing now it's only the devices being sold that are influencing market share.
u/kubelke Thanks so much for the question – haha this is a great one!
I could answer this in so many ways, but primarily: we charge for GoSquared because, unlike Google, we don't make money from a global monopoly on digital advertising 😂
In seriousness, though – there is always going to be a cheaper / free alternative to whatever you're doing, unless you yourself are offering something for free. In which case, you probably need to find a way to make money to pay your bills.
I believe for anyone building a business, it's obviously critical to build something people want. And for us, with GoSquared Analytics – we found many years ago that some people wanted an easier-to-use, slicker, faster, privacy-friendly website analytics tool. It's not for everyone(!) – but then it doesn't need to be. Google Analytics isn't for everyone either, but they mop up a huge amount of the marketing by being free.
The world is large, the majority of the world's population now have access to the internet. There are niche audiences, pockets of opportunity everywhere. Make something people want, and some number of people will pay something for it. You don't have to get everyone in the world to pay – just enough to satisfy your needs.
Often, the people saying "Why do I need you when I can get X for free!" are not your ideal customer – spend time finding more of the people that are.
Also, from our experience: no one will ever tell you they want to pay you more money. You will only ever hear pricing feedback that says you should charge less. It's a trap, usually – be careful who and what you pay attention to when it comes to pricing feedback!
I hope this helps!
Thanks for not harrassing me ;P The code isn't mine, in the end, so it's not like I take any ownership in it. But some people HAVE blatantly stolen my specific modifications before, which was annoying. But I digress.
I do have all the heart flags from Eurovision; I'm not particularly fond of the flag beads though. I think I'll stick with the tiny flags though. I like the minimalist pixelly look. Also they're available as a set to download online here.
It appears to be up and running here. Our GoSquared Analytics is showing a good amount of visitors on the site right now: https://www.gosquared.com/demo/now/tf2
If you are unable to access the Wiki can you run a trace route for me? https://kb.intermedia.net/article/682
Thanks for the kind words!
Unfortunately, the minimum iOS version that 4.0 will run on is 11.0. It became increasingly hard to support smaller devices that ran iOS 10, especially with playcalling and such. Additionally, a vast majority of devices are on iOS 12 at this stage. I'm sorry I wasn't able to build in support for iOS 10 devices, but I'm happy to hear that 3.1.3 is working perfectly for you!
u/friedster – sorry Jason, just wanted to stop by to say I was so inspired by this response last night that I woke up this morning, and recorded a product walkthrough for GoSquared Analytics. One take, merely a zoom recording, but not quite 37 mins like yours!
https://www.gosquared.com/analytics/#how-it-works
Hoping this can give us results like yours did! Thanks again for all the inspiration and motivation here – exactly what I needed on a tough week.
Agree. I'm pretty disappointed in Apple's response to KRaCK. Other desktop OS vendors released patches before the public announcement or shortly afterward. Apple saw fit to instead wait and roll it into a general minor version update. It's also looking like previous versions of macOS will be left unpatched even while adoption rate of High Sierra is still quite low.
We've found that showing pricing upfront is really important to ensure people know where they stand, but asking someone to pick a plan too early can cause unnecessary friction in the signup process.
It always depends on the product / company / pricing tiers, and what your immediate goals are, so I would recommend picking what you feel is best and running with it for, say, a month, and measuring the results. Then try experimenting / testing out alternatives.
You're always going to see a drop off in the funnel from visitors > signups > activations > paying customers. What's different for every business, and what can only be discovered through experimentation, is finding out which stages of the funnel are strongest and weakest.
One of my colleagues has been writing about our own experimentations in user onboarding recently – hopefully this comes in handy too! https://www.gosquared.com/blog/onboarding-without-overloading
Thanks for posting. Great question.
I would start with an MVP (Minimum Viable Product), spending as little time and money as possible. Then install a customer engagement/survey app. Below are several free or inexpensive options to Intercom (a leader in this area). Then evolve in the right direction. I wish we'd started this way.
Customer interviews have actually become a core part of our Growth strategy, we've
built a system around scheduling them and extracting insights. Live chat is great for short form feedback ( we don't use Intercom, we actually use our own tool GoSquared for this ) but for longer form feedback, we schedule Zoom calls with our customers that are roughly 30-45 minutes long.
One of the tools that has been incredibly helpful for us in extracting these insights is grain. I am so so impressed with this product. It transcribes your Zoom calls and will allow you to extract key phrases and sentences that you can edit together and send a 30 second summary around to the wider team.
Thank you. Google Search Ads is the only thing that has driven decent sign ups but its also really expensive in comparison to the social channels. Something I am a bit confused about that you said about Google Ads is 'especially if you already have keywords ranking that you know are converters.'
So we have a really great post, which is pretty much the top ranking organic search result for people searching for an 'intercom alternative'
https://www.gosquared.com/blog/intercom-alternatives-free
It converts really well, so what I don't understand is why I would also run ads for that search term (if the post is effectively doing it for free)
I would say whatever you are going to actually use. Everyone has GA but I'm not sure how many people A) actually use it B) have it set up correctly.
I would also say specifically for SaaS, just find something that lets you focus on your 'Pirate Metrics:' Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral, Revenue (AARRR!)
I work for an Analytics SaaS business (Gosquared) so obviously we use our own platform for this. There are a bunch of others like Heap, Amplitude, Mixpanel, Woopra.
Just find something that you're comfortable with and you'll actually use, that doesn't require too much set up and you'll actually be able to take action on the data.
Here's a great post, some really practical tips with some example B2B landing pages at the bottom
We have just launched a new area of our platform at GoSquared. Our platform is specifically designed for SaaS platforms, who want to get a better understanding of the web traffic and convert more to sign ups. SaaS business have always loved our analytics, but wanted the ability to take action on the insights, so we have just launched our new marketing automation platform to help them send better more targeted .

Any genuine feedback really welcomed!
My reaction after scrolling the site to the bottom: "Wait, what button!?"
I found it finally... It's actually not a button but a navigation option, of course nobody clicks it.
You need to make it a "Call to Action" button. And it should be visible right when I come to the page.
See: https://www.gosquared.com/blog/call-to-action-buttons for examples.
Appreciate the interest. We're still nailing down the date for next event. Our current thinking is that we want to put on an event at least every 2 months. So our first event was in Feb and our second event was in April. So most likely the next one will be in late June or early July.
We'll announce a firmed up date shortly on our Twitter and in our SaaS newsletter. Happy to answer any other questions if you have them :)
I've looking for someone that can connect to the Freshbook's API to display my revenue for the week on the Statusboard App (https://www.gosquared.com/statusboard/) on iOS. Let me know if you know of anyone.
Hey Slyf, I work for GoSquared so I can hopefully shed some light. You're right it's not quite as simple as 80% of social traffic goes boom. It is based on pageview data, we're quite strict about what we count as a pageview and how we track active visitors. This support doc lends some light on how we define engaged: https://www.gosquared.com/customer/portal/articles/606891-engagement
In terms of what is "social", great question and it's definitely not a stable term. We group a number of social networks together under social (Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Dribble, LinkedIn, stumbleupon, delicious and a bunch of others) and it covers what are major social sources across our network.
There's also the field of "dark social" which are visits that come from social but don't easily appear as so. A lot of app traffic from Facebook will appear as direct and it's very hard to pin down. So take these numbers with a grain of salt, if anything the impact on web browsing was actually greater.
Hope this provides some insight!
Really depends on what kind of info you want to display. If you run any websites, you GoSquared has a beautiful info interface that you could just put into fullscreen mode. Also, Panic from my original post made their infoboard into an iOS app and now they drive their displays from iPads. Maybe you could use the Xcode iOS simulator to do the same from your Mac Mini?
