Advice
Currently the site does the basics pretty well:
- an algo ranks links/posts based on votes and time
- searching said links/posts (elastic search is the shit)
- private messaging between users - gmail style
- uses can create subs ("headcycles") for public or private use with moderation/subscription
- everything is cached to avoid a major hit on the db
Unfortunately the site looks very plain and I think someone who hasn't seen a site like reddit won't really understand the point.
I think I might have gone too minimal, and any style or functionality advice would be greatly appreciated.
O.k. here's an unabashed plug for headcycle.com - basically a reddit clone I built for fun.
For anyone who checks it out please be gentle (it's built to withstand a good amount of traffic but not a hug of death).

As for the OP's initial question - I really don't think any clone can dethrone reddit, instead it will be a something new and different that a younger generation will embrace and as of now no one knows exactly what that will be (but it's probably an app with a website on the side).
