Looks like most of links are dead, so I uploaded it again. Link 1: https://vid.me/jOAtK Link 2: https://instant.io/#b0d1cbd195083f8bd58d756afe4a2c8e20eb35ba Upvote so more people can see. Enjoy. :)
Also this has been around for a while now in the form of instant.io. Seems like the only difference is that if your file is below 5 GB, wormhole stores it on their server for a limited time, while instant.io is peer to peer only.
Webtorrent is hands down the best way I've found to send files to other people. No waiting, no limits, it's on my computer and then it's on theirs. link. If I can get a bit of my Netflix bill by using up a bit more bandwidth I'm all for it. Why not if you have the capacity?
Webtorrent alternative: https://instant.io/. I'd be willing to host a ton on a server behind a VPN. If multiple people do this, it's going to work pretty well. It's real easy to write a python script that monitors 'new' and if it's a webtorrent link it downloads it.
Who's in?
Edit: Here's a magnet link of my cat: magnet:?xt=urn:btih:08a31d27646c9b906ba5fe748141283f7463bcb2&dn=IMG_20140920_145627.jpg&tr=wss%3A%2F%2Ftracker.btorrent.xyz&tr=wss%3A%2F%2Ftracker.webtorrent.io
Another one:
Streaming link (HBO can't take this down, because it's a serverless torrent live transmission, the more people leave it open/watch it/seed the more it will last): https://instant.io/#b0d1cbd195083f8bd58d756afe4a2c8e20eb35ba
If its only for torrenting, you can use a webtorrent, a service that downloads torrents to their servers before you download from them directly (not torrent)
They usually have a free plan with limited file size.
Examples:
There's WebTorrent implementation https://instant.io/ but it's very basic. There's also https://btorrent.xyz/ which is based on WebTorrent. But it's nowhere near the functionality and performance of dedicated clients.
Working Streaming Links:

If it's for sharing with a friend, you can drag the file here and it instantly creates a seeded webtorrent: https://instant.io/
Then he can paste the magnet link (or get torrent file) to his client, boom instantly downloading from you.
I just checked. For some reason it's available everywhere except in the UK and ireland.
If you have access to it otherwise, it's the second episode. Segment 00:24:42-00:28:21
I'm sharing it here for a while (1080p 63MB): https://instant.io/#29bd2f357b389ad524c16d318106048571b63c49

I recently found a pretty good solution. Instant io (https://instant.io/) claims to use "web torrents" to send your files. What's awesome is you host your own files, no middle server required for your files to go through and as soon as you close that tab the link is dead
We are planning to support a direct “p2p only” mode that lets you share directly from your browser without the cloud upload, but the files will become unavailable when you close your tab, similar to how instant.io works.
Interesting ideas, was not familiar with instant.io and datacash. instant.io worked like a charm.
The payment required to perform actions acts a a pretty high barrier/filter for people, that is true. The "paying a microscopic amount every second or for every action" is hard to sell as the difference between extremely cheap and free is large. But that filter is part of what makes memo like memo (as an example).
You mention that users can not pay to access the media, I thought that IPFS/Filecoin did not require payments for people to download/access, that it was the hoster that paid. I may be wrong.
The moderation you mention sounds a bit like recommender systems, but based on the moderators and not the aggregate users like the typical "People who liked this also liked this" and "Similar Media" that commerce and places like pinterest.
The blockpress UI is one of the most accessible for non-technical users.
I do not have the abilities to assist in the project even if I wanted to, but I hope that others can step up to the plate, I would be interested in actually using it from your description to see what sort of behaviors emerged on it.
The main non-technical challenge I can see is how to avoid people gaming it for their own gain, social media is the advertisers dream where they do not actually have to pay the platform but the influential users there directly to promote.
And of course the laws that are popping up to regulate social media, the meme and hate law(s) in EU being the most recent examples.
Memo is still up, so that is a counter example of course.
Great detailed explanation of your plan, it is above my abilities as mentioned but wish you the best of luck with your project.

HBO can't take this one down, because it's a serverless torrent live transmission, the more people leave it open/watch it/seed the more it will last and it will transmit faster. Please keep the browser tab open after watching to help with seeding.

> We're slowly shifting back to the point where learning how to set up a media server on an old device, buying a massive external hard drive, and taking the gamble on sailing the high seas is ultimately more convenient.
You don't even have to. Things like vavoo and popcorn time made streaming just as convenient. We now have WebTorrent (Demo) which might eventually give us a streaming service that doesn't requires an application to work. That's the point where I assume that streaming services are going to lose part of their consumer base
I did, and it would work, except it only works for ONE FILE. I want to share a series of folders that contain 540+ files and do not want to zip them in one big file (rending it useless for anyone that doesn't have the complete archive).
I really think that instant.io is broken because I'd seen videos where you are supposed to receive a link once you drag files to it... but that doesn't happen to me.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
I want to switch from windows to cloudready. I can do everything inside chrome YET i need
-Torrent client (i've seen i can use instant.io which is a clientless torrent service on the browser)
-Video player with aspect ratio settings and subtitles capabilities
What video player can i use with GPU? can i get vlc or SMplayer? Can u test mkv file on them and report back?
Ok, I watched the following video (https://youtu.be/kxHRATfvnlw) that was on webTorrent's page, and at 39m40s the host does exactly what I would like to do: He drag and drops a file on instant.io, and then can download it.
However, when I try that, I do not get the same results: no "creating .torrent".. nothing basically. I tried with Chrome and Edge. It just says I'm seeding 1file (I also got "premature close").

Am I missing something?
Why don't you just install one?
For browser download try this: https://btorrent.xyz/ or this: https://instant.io/
You can also use portable version of uTorrent: https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/utorrent_portable
Here's how pigeons compare against the wired internet: https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/aujogu/1tb_microsd_cards_are_now_a_thing/eh8y2ii/
I found that if I need an easy way to send something to someone that exceeds the E-Mail limit I use instant.io
Can only be used if both parties are on the computer at the same time though.
You could use web torrents. Zip up the mods and upload them on instant. Give your friends the link and you'll seed the files to them.
Probably a overblown solution but it is an idea.
>Could you not use https://btorrent.xyz/? > >Or https://instant.io/
Those might be something for you to check out, or other webtorrent websites if you really don't want to use an external client.
Could you not use https://btorrent.xyz/?
Or any other web based torrent client because webtorrent made them easy to make. Or is there something special about it being an addon? I figure if you're going to use an addon, might as well use an actual torrent client you can configure and run independently.

I made 3 of them, you can download a zip here (Didn't use imgur because it would decrease quality). One of them is a political map I used to check if it fits, then there's the hillshading map and also a topographic map (with cities/lakes/roads etc). They're 18*11 tiles at zoom level 9.
