You my friend should try a SMC Reset...
"Indicators that your SMC might need to be reset
After you perform normal troubleshooting, these symptoms may indicate that an SMC reset could be necessary: The computer fans run at high speed, though the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated."

Lastly to keep your macbook awake.. caffeine is one option.. but I recommend a better version of it called KeepingYouAwake:
Located here: https://github.com/newmarcel/KeepingYouAwake
I hope that gets you back on track
Amphetamine, and the FOSS alternative KeepingYouAwake, are intended to be used interactively so this might not be the solution you are looking for. macos already includes a command line tool called caffeinate
which allows you to prevent the device from sleeping while you're running your management tasks. AFAIK none of these tools will prevent a laptop from going to sleep when the lid is closed.
Just one thing to note here - Caffeine, while still functioning, hasn't been updated in several years. The mantle has been picked up by new software; KeepingYouAwake. It supports Yosemite (style, dark mode compatibility) as well as Retina screens (2x icons).
Though Caffeine works fine in the latest MacOs update, I recommend KeepYouAwake. Caffeine hasn’t been updated in a long time. KeepYouAwake has modern icons and is being actively maintained.
Caffeine is buggy, as it wasn't update since 2010.
Try:
I recommend KeepingYouAwake, as it is the lightest of those.
The right answer is probably to use a dedicated print server like OctoPrint, but I use KeepingYouAwake. It adds a little coffee mug icon up near the clock, which you can click to prevent sleep indefinitely. It's a clone of Caffeine, which works just as well, but hasn't been updated in a long time, so looks like crap on Retina/Yosemite.
Several people recommended Amphetamine, but instead of that I recommend KeepingYouAwake
BetterTouchTool is awesome
Affinity Photo/Designer as a photoshop/illustrator alternative.
CotEditor
I use https://github.com/newmarcel/KeepingYouAwake which is an open source successor to the great app Caffeine (made when Caffeine stopped being updated). Just click the coffee cup in your status bar to enable, or right click and set an amount of time to keep it on.
If you don't need the level of customization of Amphetamine, there's another app called KeepingYouAwake that's simple and has icons for both light and dark menu bars. https://github.com/newmarcel/KeepingYouAwake
Plus it's open source, which means you can inspect the code.
If it doesn't work you can always just use the caffeine terminal command. Manual page caffeine. Or you can give KeepingYouAwake a try, which is essentially "a small wrapper around Apple's caffeinate command line utilty".
Those of you who like Caffeine I would recommend this, as the original Caffeine is not developed anymore and lacks support of retina resolution and dark mode.
You could set up an iPhone as an external display using Duet Display, iDisplay, or one of the other apps for that purpose, and follow this guide: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201834
I also found this Caffeine clone on Github
I've been using your icons for months and I can't wait for the improved and dark mode version.
You should also send them to https://github.com/newmarcel/KeepingYouAwake , which has other Yosemite functionalities and hopefully will end replacing the now defunct Caffeine.
And the continuation, KeepingYouAwake
>KeepingYouAwake is inspired by Caffeine from Lighthead Software. I used it for many years, but sadly it hasn't been updated in a while. Eventually in 2014 I decided to build a replacement for myself that was optimized for macOS Yosemite and used the caffeinate command line tool under the hood.
Er... First kudos for your app!
But, I would rather use KeepingYouAwake for this, unless you really need precise timing (like turning off after 4h 26m) or when you need a hotkey for this (which really can just be accomplished by Karabiner & caffeinate).
For people to use this, it really should have a better feature set or a lower price (I think a low price like $0.99 should work?) or maybe open sourcing the app and receiving donations might be an option?
The annoying thing about Amphetamine is that when it's running it's an actual running app that takes up space in the command-tab panel, whereas Caffeine is only ever in the menu bar
Edit: Just found Keeping You Awake as mentioned in the thread, it's a great alternative. Basically a clone of Caffeine except more polished/smooth and a nicer icon

Edit 2: Correction, the Amphetamine dock-bar app visibility can be disabled so it only shows up in the menu bar
Does the display turn off and/or the iMac go to sleep? If so, install KeepingYouAwake or Caffeine to prevent the iMac from doing so. That should help.
Here is an alternative to Caffeine, because Caffeine is not longer supported by the developer as far as i know and this is a pretty good and well done alternative! https://github.com/newmarcel/KeepingYouAwake
Replace Caffeine with Keeping You Awake. Caffeine hasn't been updated in tears and doesn't have Dark Mode compatibility. Small thing but even if I don't use Dark Mode I'd like to know that the apps I am using will at least work properly with them.
Only issue with Caffeine is that it hasn't been updated to work with Dark Mode for those who use it. KeepingYouAwake is the "spiritual successor", if you like, that adds this functionality but also offers time-limited activation.
