Lightning Browser has some simple built in adblocking (disclaimer, i'm the dev) and material design. You can download the plus apk from Github: https://github.com/anthonycr/Lightning-Browser/releases/tag/v4.2.3
Otherwise the plus app will cost you a couple bucks on the play store.
Yes it is: https://github.com/anthonycr/Lightning-Browser/blob/master/LICENSE
OP is a jerkoff for pretending that he made this thing. He took Lightning and added crap to it, including an extra permission grabbing your email address. What a fucking farce!
You said you want beginner friendly projects but you put your android development skills in between beginner and intermediate? What have you created?

Projects like this openly encourage people to contribute. I found this in like 5 seconds. I don't know what you mean by beginner friendly- but if you know any android development at all you can always try to make small contributions, or at the very least, play around with it on your own time to learn more skills.
There are browsers with adblockers (as well as plugins) on phones, you know?
If you're on Android, I've found Lightning+ to be the most consistent. (Though it's also so thorough that links through Google ads don't work.)
The dev branch has commits as recent as 4 hours ago, and it seems there will take a while to merge those changes in master, which would probably lead to an updated build in F-Droid.
I really like the April 28, 2019 unofficial build that you can find on Github (not available in the Google Play Store).
There is also a backup download link (cursor to bottom).
FYI you can get the pro version for free from the Github repo or on F-droid: https://github.com/anthonycr/Lightning-Browser/releases/tag/v4.2.3
It's safer than using a random version you find online :)
Lightning Browser is open-source and has been for a long time. In fact, it's what Javelin was based off.
If you're interested, I accept a lot of commits from people making pull requests on the repository and have made a lot of progress in the past couple months now that I'm out of school.
I would just love it if bookmarks and tabs were accessible everywhere by swiping side drawers on the left and right side of the screen, like Lightning Browser does.

I see bunch of browser that takes Lightning Browser's source and riddles it with ads. There's one that doesn't, Hola's in-app browser, but it doesn't give credits where it's due though.
Speed browser (a fork of lighting) is really quick and fluid, it's also the only browser I have found (apart from opera, because fuck opera) that supports text reflow. It also has a reader mode and built in adblock.
Edit: Here's a link.
No root required. Make sure to hit the refresh arrow in the top-right corner.
You can also just download the browser from the creator's github directly: https://github.com/anthonycr/Lightning-Browser/releases
Only the beta versions has material design: https://github.com/anthonycr/Lightning-Browser/releases
Sadly the beta only shows the domain in the url bar. So it's impossible to see at a glance on which subreddit you are or in which github repo.
