Press spacebar when a file is selected in Finder; brings up Quickview. One of the most useful Finder features.
If you want some nifty window management I recommend downloading Magnet from the Mac Appstore.
I have 2x 1440p monitors at work but I prefer the setup in this post.
Although screen real estate is fairly comparable, I like not having a border in the middle.
Magnet is an indispensable part of my workflow with the ultrawide.
I've been a die-hard fan of Moom for quite a long time. It's resizing by cells menu is one of those genius ideas that should be implemented in every OS. It's a bit expensive ($10), but for me it's money well spent. You can download a free trial from its webpage.
Recently I've tried Magnet and it's quite convenient and easy to use. It should be $0.99 at the App Store right now for a limited time.
The one thing I love about Windows and Linux is keyboard shortcuts and the single biggest thing was keyboard commands for making the active window snap to right or left 50%.
Eventually discovered Magnet and that satisfied a lot of workflow habits I had built up.

Check out Magnet in the App Store. It does a great job of using hot keys to quickly snap windows in a wide variety of layouts. I like it even better than the built in Windows functionality.
Magnet . An amazing windows management tool for Mac, allows you to easily size windows to different parts of your screen just by simply dragging to the edges. I can’t live without it!
I believe that's an intentional design feature (as that functionality makes sense in most business use-cases) so I don't think there's a setting to change it, but you might want to look into Window Management Tools to make your life easier - Magnet and Spectacle might be useful
Something about the way your describing the problem made me think of this: are you inadvertently running in single app mode? If applications are automatically minimizing themselves without your interaction, that could be the cause.
What others have said is very good advice as well. Depending on how you like to set things up, you may also benefit from a window manager like Magnet. It duplicates Windows 10's window docking at the edges of the screen, but with way more options.
So first of all, buy Magnet Window. It's like 1£ and you will have a little windows experience on Mac. It's amazing how easy it is to organise opened windows. Really Recommend.
How to check the size of few selected files or folders?
On windows you would just select > right click > properties and you would know.
On Mac, press Option+Command+I and you will get a window with information you need. What is great with this, is that the widow is dynamic. In other words, you can continue selecting, deselecting and the information on how much space selection takes will update.
To cut/pase.
On windows you do CTRL+X and then CTRL+V
On Mac this is more like copy/move. So the first operation, is the same as in copy/paste. COMMAND+C but then you need to press COMMAND+OPTION+V to paste the files and remove the source aka cut/paste.
Previewing files.
This is a important concept on Mac. On windows you usually just double click and open what you want to see. On Mac, you select file and press SPACE to see the file and then SPACE again to close. You can select few files and then press SPACE to loop through selected files and preview them. It's actually pretty neat. You can preview a lot of files, you can see photoshop file, photo, pdf, excel etc.
There's no built-in snapping feature (although there's is split view introduced in OS X 10.11) but you can get from 3rd party utilities like Magnet that sells for $0.99 on the Mac App Store.
There's certainly keyboard shortcuts on macOS.
No longer a mac user (though might be again soon, we'll see), however I'd suggest;
I use magnet for this and it works great. Once you learn the keyboard shortcuts you can quickly arrange your apps across your screen. There are many apps like this, some are probably free.
Thanks for the replies. Turns out that in a haze I had downloaded magnet and forgot that I had. Played with it for a couple hours. Perfectly simple. Liking it quite well so far. Not sure how I forgot I did that. Stoned me tried to take care of sober me. I owe stoned me a nice treat.
These are just apps that uses the OS X's window management to move windows around, they are not "full" WMs like the ones on Linux like KWin, xfwm4 or openbox.
Personally I use an app called Magnet.
