Hey, I'm the maker!
Many of you have heard that macOS will have some of its own translation features starting with Big Sur. The very first logical question that may pop up in your head is "Why Mate then?"
I'm glad to answer! First of all, Mate serves a slightly different target audience. Mate is different from Apple or Google Translate at its core. We focused on a small niche of pro users & learners who live languages. Who translate so much that a simple double-click saves them hours every week as opposed to copy-pasting.
To name a few, here are things that Mate nails better:
* 103 languages instead of 12
* One-click translation of sentences and words on pages, not only full page
* Translate selected text in any Mac app, not only in Safari
* Uninterrupted writing flow – always available in the menu bar
* Phrasebook for saving vocabulary that you want to learn.
However, there are things that we proudly share with Apple:
* A firm stance on privacy
* Seamless full page translations in Safari
Privacy is our top priority! Here's our privacy policy that we always share proudly, for example: https://gikken.co/mate-translate/privacy/
Yep, if you purchase the Mac app (that integrates not only with Safari but all of macOS), you'll automatically get Pro in Firefox, too. You just need to create a Mate account in the Mac app and then sign in in Firefox.
on macos you can add english→french and french→english in preferences in Dictionary, and then right-click or force-click on words in most places. also, maybe this is interesting: https://gikken.co/mate-translate/
Not a cartoon but a browser extension (all major ones) that I made specifically for this: pick up some vocab by watching Netflix. Maybe you‘ll also find it handy: https://gikken.co/mate-translate/netflix
Mate translator. Pretty good and has human readable privacy policy. You can also revoke your consent at anytime, a feature I have never seen anyone else implement, ever.
