Why the hell hasn't someone turned milkdrop into a browser plugin so we can use it with Spotify or Pandora? I wish I knew how to code. The world needs this. The source code can be found here if someone smart wants to give it a try.
EDIT: So after doing a little digging I found this screensaver from the creator of milkdrop that works with any sound you play on the computer. http://www.geisswerks.com/geiss/index.html
You should download Winamp which has the complete version with way better optimization and options. Grab This Collection of milkdrop presets that were gathered by the guy who created milkdrop. Some of the best presets ever.
I honestly have no idea why there has never been a successor or anything that's come close to milkdrop, ever. There have been other visualizers, sure, and milkdrop is as old as the Gamecube, but none come even close to providing the jaw dropping eye candy that milkdrop has.
Sit back with your favourite indulgence and get eye fucked by math, while loving every second.
This webGL version is great for mac and linux users though, who, while they can get milkdrop to work through apps like ProjectM, it is a huge pain in the ass.
Most visualizers are totally worthless and pointless in my mind, however Geiss and milkdrop have always been on a whole different level. I have never seen anything as good as milkdrop in any nightclub I've been to, and they pay a lot of money for their systems I assume. I love opening up winamp late at night and listening to music while watching mikdrop visualizations, it's so soothing. Her's a sample of what it can do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jrh7PsFbziE Also it was so customizable, you can vote the ones you don't like down and the other up, so you tune out all the lousy ones it comes with. You can also make messages pop up which is useful if you're using at at a party or DJ'ing. I've been a big fan for forever. It's great to just leave it on when you're just enjoying music, my kids like to watch it too. So yeah, just watching EQ bars more around does nothing for me, but Milkdrop 2 was the bomb. Oh look, their website is still up: http://www.geisswerks.com/milkdrop/
Get winamp + milkdrop 2.0 from here
Install complete version
When winamp is started up hit ctrl+L or add url and type in "linein://" run line in.
if not working right away. Make sure your stereo mix is enabled in your record devices settings. Right click the speaker icon on taskbar. Go to Recording devices. Right click in blank area in the center. Show Disabled devices and Show disconnected devices. Stereo mix should appear. Make it your default recording device. If still not working go into stereo mix properties and turn the levels up. If still not working go into playback devices, right click speakers, got to properties, go to levels, turn up line-in and microphone. It should work now.
PCVR Link or virtual desktop + winamp + replace milkdrop preset with these http://www.geisswerks.com/milkdrop/favorite_presets_2020_05.zip
Unaware of any decent native apps.
What kind? Which part?
Generally you take all the audio data, run fourier transforms on it to get the frequency intensity, then visualise those intensities with some kind of spectrogram. Additionally you can use beat detection algorithms on specific frequency ranges to queue effects that time to the beat.
If they're technical visualisers they'll just be spectrograms. If they're cosmetic ones (like MilkDrop), they'll just be coded effects that use the frequency and beat data as inputs to vary and drive the effects.
Definitely get what you pay for but there is this $50 led projector that plugs in HDMI, its very much a case of you get what you pay for but it fuckin looks sick for Milkdrop or as ProjectM as I use it with my chromebook or raspberry pi. But with the cheap projector it has to be absolutely pitch black dark.
But what you are looking for is just a red green laser projector. I would say just look at on eBay who is selling the most and even buy straight from china if it cuts the price down which is always does. I but lots of stuff from china off eBay and it comes quicker than some us sellers to be honest.
Milkdrop hasn't received any updates in well over a decade. You can create/download/install new presets and there are various places you can download them from, but the plug-in isn't downloading anything automatically. If you'd like to see a list of all of the current presets, just press the 'L' key and it will bring up the Load Menu that lists them alphabetically.
The platform I'd like it to be on is Steam.
The trippy app? Nothing, NOTHING, is more trippy than the Milkdrop visualizer for WinAmp.

For a really small sample that could never really do it justice.
For myself, I distinctly remembered saying "this isn't as awesome as weed". But what I mean by that, is that I really didn't connect with the music like I do on weed. I took 220µg and what was amazing was the "light show" of closed eyed visuals. But I really believe that the type of music is important. Something like Pink Floyd, or Tame Impala would be amazing. The problem was on my come up I was just staring out the window at the trees and grass and wasn't solely focusing on the music (had tame impala going on in the background). Of course the music is better than listening to it sober, but if you would really like a trip check out "Milk Drop" it's a program that plays music and has various visual shows it goes through. Totally worth getting since it's free and awesome to watch sober (so multiply that by at least 1000 with acid)
