Rocket Network. Allows you to share the same project file, in real-time, over the Internet, across Protools, Logic, or Cubase, whether you're on a Mac or Windows machine. Projects are stored on a server. Integrated chat window. Track-based permissions (so each track can be "owned" by a different collaborator.) Works for MIDI, audio, and basic effects/automation.
PS: I co-founded the company and wrote a lot of the server software!
PPS: It no longer exists. Our first betas were in 1995, and we went out of business in 2003. Digidesign bought our technology and turned it into a proprietary service called "Digidelivery" that only works for Protools users. Sorry for the tease.
For a similar idea, check out: http://www.ohmstudio.com
Might want to check out Ohm Studio, I met a few people there in beta. I believe it is free until January 2013.
I found it to be very interesting software, there are a ton of features I wish it had, so not a replacement to my DAW.
edit: Still in beta, not fair to say it isn't fully functional yet. It is very nice software for collaboration.
I don't know how these new DAW's are going to stick to somebody, when there's so many standard pro level programs in the scene right now.
The only one I was kind of interested was http://www.ohmstudio.com/ but it's taking the developers very long to finish this, so I kind of lost interest.
Thanks all for the replies and suggestions so far! let’s keep the conversation going and maybe find something usable. I did happen upon Ohmstudio but that is more oriented towards studio recording.
Ohm Studio is definitely what you want. It's basically a DAW that allows both of you to connect to the same session online. I don't know the costs, but this is what you want.
yo, i'm late to the party but this seems pretty interesting.
i've never used this software, but i've been working on stuff in ohm studio which seems like a similar concept. If you're still looking for people to get in on this, id be happy to join.
All good points, if I thought about this in 1995 it might be a little different.
As for MIDI files sounding boring, I'm totally with you on that, they sound god awful but it gets the general "tune" across and I guess that's what I'm going for. You'd basically be creating the arrangement for the song. Then once it's in your DAW, you can use plugins, or replace MIDI guitar tracks with awesome Gibson solos.
All of this seems a bit redundant now that I just stumbled across this :( http://www.ohmstudio.com/
that's the obvious solution, but you can't make a recording like that right? when we're together we just hit record. I was thinking there has got to be something you can just both plug into so when it comes time to jot down some musical ideas it's available. I found this since I posted so I'll try it.
Unfortunately, I got away from the CC suite. I think this program would help the entire project. If AA is doing wonders then no need to change, thought I'd give some input on the topic.
Are you looking for something that's like an online DAW where multiple users can use it at the same time? I was looking into this a while back and found Ohm Studio. I remember waiting for a beta key but never got one, but it's worth looking into. You can record samples, import and sync it up with other members working on a project. This might be able to explain it to you more clearly than I did.
yeah, its not realtime unfortunately but its still pretty cool. I'm going to take a look into ninjam as this is the first im hearing of it but it seems like a pretty awesome concept if i can get it to work without crazy latency.
if you end up liking ohm you should add me on there. im this dude
1) I play acoustic guitar/sing/record voice stuff for podcasts. I recently got a new mic, an Audio Technica AT2020. It's under $100 and has really good quality for that stuff. Here's an example of a song cover I recorded with it. The one I got is XLR, which you'd need an audio interface to use, which will bring you well over $100. You can alternatively get the USB AT2020 mic, which is still great quality, but not quite on the same level of flexibility.
2) Ohm Studio is a program that lets you record collaboratively. It seems really fuckin useful. I work alone with my music so I haven't had a chance to try it out, but it seems like it fits what you want exactly. Also, for solo recording, I suggest Reaper. It's powerful as shit and super cheap for what it does (but you can just use the trial indefinitely if you want).
Good luck
Ohm Studio is a daw supporting realtime collaboration over internet. When you record something it uploads instantly as low-quality ogg, then as wav. If you both have plugins you can change their settings and they are synced automatically, if not - the processed track is bounced and uploaded. AFAIR free version has full functionality except loslless master bounce and 24bit recording so you can give it a try. Keep in mind it's just out of beta so the interface can be sometimes inconvenient and needs getting used to, it lacks some features that major daws have, but i can see it being really big if the devs will keep improving it.
Hmmm... too bad. I suppose there is always the online collaboration idea. I have heard good things about this place http://www.ohmstudio.com/ and they are accepting applications for their beta testing. There are also several other online collaboration sites that are listed on their beta application form, if this site doesn't tickle your fancy, but you think online collaboration is something you might want to try.
Sadly, it is after 4 in the morning where I am and I have to head off to bed. Feel free to PM me any time you want to chat, though. You seem like a good person.

Seriously. I signed up for their mailing list and a chance at the beta, didn't get into the beta unfortunately. I haven't heard anything in so long, I completely forgot about it.
EDIT: WTF. Apparently you can download it at ohmstudio.com, but checking my email shows I haven't gotten an email from them since February. Still need a beta account, but I'm going to install it and see if I can at least look around a bit without an account.
