The creators of Amnesia made two and a half Penumbra games before The Dark Descent was released. They may not be equally as scary as Amnesia, but are still extremely interesting in the horror survival genre. You can get all of them for $20 here. Penumbra Overture, the first one in the series, was featured in the original Humble Indie Bundle. If you missed that I could send you a key.
Well you have FREE browser based Fallen London And Sunless Sea from the same guys
EDIT: There's also the Penumbra games.
I know you didn't like Amnesia, but you should take a look at their earlier games. Many that also were not impressed with Amnesia really enjoyed their older games.
Take a look:

Yeeeppppp.. That's what I did. Definitely a very tense moment.
Last night I was also down in one of the mining dungeons. The entire time I was getting this ridiculous Penumbra vibe. It was really upsetting. There was nothing particularly scary about the experience. There were a ton of feral ghouls, but they're nothing bad. The Museum of Witchcraft at least had a ton of audio and visual shit going on to creep you out.. but I really think my experiences with Penumbra drove the fear in the mine. I don't know if it was intentional of Bethesda, but.. damn. It worked.
Penumbra is probably my favorite series of all time. Or at least a close second to BioShock. I advise playing each game because the stories do connect.
There are three in the series and you can get them all for $10.
I would have to say the last one is most like Gone Home because it is the most atmospheric. It does, however, have more puzzles than Gone Home. A lot of people skip over the last game because it is different than the two before, but I still believe it deserves to be played.
Maybe try Penumbra? It is a horror game that is one of the few that genuinely freaked me out. I never could play very far into the game for this very reason.
the site have a demo for you to try out. In the game, you can't really fight the enemy. You are just a measly human. So you are forced to use wit to beat the enemy or escape them.
You should REALLY check out the Penumbra series. They have an amazing story that is very well told, I can't stress that enough. It's from the makers of Amnesia. I'm playing the 2nd in the series right now and I'm in love. The puzzles remind me so much of Silent Hill. Though a major difference is that there is essentially little to no combat, which I like since a monster is much scarier if you can't shoot/kill it. If you end up playing it, be sure to let me know what you think. :)
