I have yet to see this change to twitter reported by one reputable news source presenting any kind of actual evidence. So I will remain skeptical for a while. If anyone has better sources than buzzfeed, please share.
If you are worried about the impending Twittopocalypse, then there is always player.me. it's a gaming-centric social network trying hard to recruit new members from the gaming community.
EDIT: Here's my player.me profile. Feel free to follow if you want to hear about my indie game or my Minecraft mods.
I'm coding Player.me. We're a centralized profiles for gamers, connecting twitter, twitch and youtube. You get all the updates in a single feed and a pretty page! Here's an example profile: http://player.me/huskymudkipz
We came up with the idea 'cause I'm a starcraft guy and I like getting updates and watching matches. Also, we all love gaming.
The beer also helped with coming up with ideas.
This may be a game not uploaded to http://player.me/, the website where Mixer gets their video game directory from. I had a similar issue as well with a game I wanted to stream. Through the linked website, you can request to add a game to the Player.me directory.
In the world of YouTube, I'd argue that a 20% hit rate is actually quite good. People are busy, they have lives, things fall through. It happens.
The inherent flaw in a subreddit for "networking more intimate connections" and "making friends" is that it only works on a small scale. How intimate can you really get in a community of 100? 1000? 100,000?
One of the biggest gripes people have with Channel Awesome, for example, is that it started as a small group of like-minded friends and individuals, and eventually ballooned to a massive group no one could keep track of anymore.
As far as gamer networking goes, that exists too: player.me. They're growing rather quickly and about to release a phone app. It's a much more organic setup than Reddit, and frankly if given the choice between connecting with people on a vague subreddit versus a targeted website where I can build up my own profile, I'm going for the latter.

We're a centralized profile for gamers. Basically, you create an account and you can follow pro-gamers and streamers and your friends. Instead of going to twitter/youtube/twitch, you get all their updates from there.
Also, you get a beautiful and responsive page as your profile.
It's http://player.me
A social network and centralized feed for gamers. It links with your youtube and twitch, and you get to have a nice page. For example: http://player.me/incontrol
I'm currently building a real-time reddit clone instead of opting for a traditional forum.

Nah I can share, I don't mind ;) It's just super long to write, lol.
I spent a good amount of learning design too - but I'm only at the stage when I know something is not friendly/pretty. I can't create. I don't have that capacity yet. I'm more coding than art. I'm subscribed to hack design and followed all their step - read all the stuff. Even organized Design conventions in Montreal (Montreal Meets).
I just don't have that creative touch =|.
When I first created the wizard step - as I coded it and did it, I knew it wasn't friendly at all. After letting my close friends test it, they said the same thing. When we launched private beta, 5 users reported the same thing. At that point, I can't ignore it anymore.
I know my designer is a scarce resource so from 4 basic designs, I actually did the whole website and made it responsive. You can check it out: http://player.me
Cheers mate ;) I know you're only trying to help hehe.
Ah man, hope I'm not too late!
Name: Player.me

What do we do: Centralized profile for gamers. Basically, you'll be able to make a public profile, and follow pro-gamers. Instead of going to twitter, youtube, facebook and twitch, you'll get it all in one place.
Looking for: Feedback!
