Ah yes, loading the maps from your Garmin GPS is sluggish at best. I believe at least on GPSMAP 64 series it was still USB one I believe… So i download maps I install on my laptop and plan routes only using those, then I just have to sync the trip folder to the device, which is only few kb. As an alternative to Basecamp you could try QMapShack (open source, https://github.com/Maproom/qmapshack/wiki). I quite like it, but there is a bit of a learning curve. I started using it with quickstart options, and online maps. The advantage is that the maps will always be up to date then.
Gravelmaps is just data file so not OS specific. To read the file, Garmin does have BaseCamp for MacOS. It's not well supported right now. An open source application is QMapShack: https://github.com/Maproom/qmapshack/wiki, it supports 64 bit linux, 64 bit windows, and MacOS X > 10.12.
I believe that QMapShack allows editing tracks manually as well. It takes some time to set up, understand its environment and start working with it though.
It's free software and supports GNU/Linux, MacOS and Windows. https://github.com/Maproom/qmapshack/wiki
