This would actually make a cool monthly thread, recapping on the shared startups from a year before.
Seems like the top post, Glip was acquired by something called RingCentral, I'd be interested to hear from /u/ppezaris about what the acquisition process was like / how it came about / how big his/her company was before they were considered for acquisition.
We use Trello for assigning task (You can discuss on each task too)
and we use Glip https://glip.com/ for general communication.
By using these two tools, we have successfully reduced our dependency on emails for up-to about 95%
Like with anything it has its good and bad points. For me...
The Good No commuting - fuck spending two hours a day going to and from work Get more work done due to less distractions and lack of travelling I can work from bed, with my cat You miss out on office gossip
The Bad Lack of built in exercise - walking / cycling to work Sometimes communication is tricky, things get lost, items get dropped, conferencing isn't as good as face to face You don't have as much ambient information about what the organisation is doing outside of your realm You miss out on office gossip Creativity can be a bit harder as you don't always have people to bounce ideas against
Motivation for me is the same, I really care about what I do and ultimately, like any job, if you don't perform you're out. Perhaps I work even harder because the work isn't always so obvious.
And yeah, meetings are either skype, we use a lot of email, we use glip (https://glip.com/), and we use smartsheet. We have people in every continent so sometimes they hours can be varied and long too.
I think it ultimately comes down to what type of person you are. I'm relatively anti-social and can more than survive on my own for a day, others crave the interaction. The biggest bonus for me is that I can work from anywhere in the world which is something I have always wanted and may not last forever so I want to take advantage of it.
I found the perfect thing for us: https://glip.com/ - "Team Newbie" is the name for the team.
It has a team feature, where we can have a global discussion, share files, adjust calendars, have video calls up to 20 people, share from google drive, dropbox, Github. Then create our own groups, for small group chats and projects.
I've created the Team Name - 'Team Newbie'. You need to be invited to the group (sucks i know) so send me a pm or leave a comment with your email (real or throwaway). And best of all its FREE!
If you have any trouble joining the 'team', search for Jamie Mumford, and i'l help you out.
