Just out of curiosity, is there any particular place where materials unique to Second Life are archived? I'm placing this query here so that it will wind up in Google; this can be a doorway both to the Library of Congress and to Second Life as well.

The community I would say is a solid 6/10 it has it good sides and back like Gaia itself.
Community is 4/10 from personal experience.
I have no opinion on the community but has decent ratings.
Another option is to buy Second Life Linden Dollars (L$) at secondlife.com using your credit card, use that virtual world to deposit L$ at VirWoX, trade the L$ for BTC.
In this setup, Linden Labs takes on the risk of chargeback and uses expensive, sophisticated anti-fraud methods to mitigate that risk, and the small currency exchange VirWoX protects itself behind that shield to offer exchange services.
It is also possible to use paypal or CC directly to VirWoX, but they still require you to exchange USD -> L$ -> BTC, the fees are a bit higher that way AND you'll get wasted change at both steps of the transaction.
That is more steps than simply CC -> BTC, but no leaving the house required and you can still have the BTC in your wallet within 2 hours. My testing on ~$50usd ran ~6% grand total of fees with this method (and some L$ change since VirWoX only trades integer BTC or USD, no fractions. :P)
The Second Life community is still very much there and active. In fact, during the COVID lockdowns, SL saw a huge increase in resident numbers. If you want to explore, make an account, and join us. There's much to be seen and done. www.secondlife.com
Actually, there IS a free source of potential cover images: you can go to Second Life, a video game that's available for free online. You can go there and also get free custom avatars and costumes at the aptly named freebie markets for your covers, as well as backgrounds you can use, which includes everything from office buildings to castles.
There is a catch, of course: other indie authors have used video game imagery on covers and have generally done a terrible job with the covers, and generally the books inside them as well, so video game art on the cover has been associated with amateurish and low quality writing. This could hurt your sales.
But this approach DOES offer a freebie way to sidestep copyright issues, so long as you don't use the avatars that you get when you start out on Second Life ... which are not erotica type avatars, anyway.
Your choice, of course. I would recommend getting an artist to design your covers for you, if you can afford it. But I know how it can be when things are really tight, so this might be an "out' for you.
since you feel at least comfortable enough to talk to others on the internet i would suggest using that as your springboard to social interactions outside of the computer. i would start at 7cupsoftea
talk through with some people there and build a better understanding of where your insecurities lie
then move onto a website with chatrooms and practice striking up a conversation with them.
then if you still feel uncomfortable try something like secondlife and use their virtual world to talk to people with more physical sense via text or voice
and then move onto talking more to your peers in college
hopefully taking some of these steps if not all of them over a short amount of time will boost your confidence in everyday conversation.
good luck
I run an online business in the virtual reality game, Second Life, which so far has made me around 2,000$. It's a start-up and I'm still running it and creating more products to sell/updating current products. It might be a 'game', but you have to know how to run a business for it to be successful. Luckily, I've done great and cornered a certain market in the game. For those wondering, the in game currency are called Lindens, which you can sell for US Dollars in the second life website. It's nice to have a few thousand dollars saved in my account on that game. It's basically a savings account.
It's already happening brother.
Go to http://www.SecondLife.com
Get Second Life
Buy a penis (Plenty of freebie ones out there)
Get some snazzy free clothes from a freebie place like Freebie Island (I may or may not be associated with it)
Chat up some girls
Have virtual sex with them (everything is player made in SL and peopel have made sexbeds that allow avatars to have sex in every position ever conceived ever 100 years forever and ever.)
Bones: You can use occulus rift, in preferences you can set first person view to show your avatar's body, then go into first person while having virtual sex. Then you can cry yourself to sleep for sinking so low or sleep happily knowing you're in the future and it only gets better from here.
You should add Second Life to your list. (http://www.secondlife.com) It's a 3D virtual world where you control an avatar and can do the same things you can in real life and more. The ingame currency can be exchanged for real currency depending on the exchange rates. This is a really awesome tool for LDRs and helps tremendously in helping you to feel closer to your SO. You can buy/rent virtual property, get a house, furnish it with whatever you want, build things, visit virtual clubs, visit virtual representations of real landmarks (like Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, and others), go on a picnic, go on a boat ride, skydive, race cars, relax on the beach and watch a virtual sunset, you name it! (There's even XXX rated stuff on there you can go to/do believe it or not) After checking out this subreddit, I'm kinda surprised to see a lack of this mentioned on the few lists I've seen.
Awesome! Thanks for the great list of ideas. Me and my SO will have to check some of these out. =D You should add the program "Second Life" to the "Play games together (For Free!)" section there. (Even though a lot of people don't think it's a game) It's a large 3D simulated world where you have avatars that you control and can do pretty much anything you can do in real life and more. (and I mean ANYTHING) If you can't do something on there, you can build it to where you can and can also make a profit through the ingame currency which can be exchanged for real currency. Though, it's a simulation, it may help keep the connection between you and your SO. That's where me and my SO met. http://www.secondlife.com
Second Life is a great way to make extra cash. Compared to many of the other suggestions here, this is probably the most fun and lucrative, if you have the capacity to learn how to build and do things there.
If you're a creative type, it's a fun and easy way to share your work. I know several musicians that make a decent living streaming live shows, artists that sell copies of their works, builders, scripters, landscapers, etc.
The possibilities are endless and hey, you're getting paid for playing a game with friends!
There are MILLIONS of US Dollars circulating Second Life every day. The way the economy is set up there makes it easy for anybody to make some real dough with a little (fun) work. I highly recommend it to stay-at-home-moms, shut-ins, elderly, disabled, or just plain creative people.
I know DOZENS of people who make over 20K per year (minimum) in Second Life. My little store nets me about enough to pay my real life bills, but I'm not really investing as much time into it as I could be. The friends and connections I've made there are a lifetime of priceless.
There are several Buddhist communities in Second Life. I've not been in there for quite some time but I do remember there being active groups, daily meditations, etc.. It might be something to look into.
