A similar and very awesome game is Soldat http://soldat.pl/en/ . Soldat is like this but has team vs team modes, has much larger levels and you don't die instantly, and you always have a jetpack. check it out too! (its free) Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cctyg-4zNk
I'm a fan of the design style of the game soldat website, so I figured i'd name my engine after a german word.
Kampf just seemed fitting, and it isn't meant to be offensive!
I used to play this old multiplayer team shooter called Soldat - it was like Modern Warfare in 2D with graphics kind of like Worms. Looking back, when I wasn't griefing people it was a really fun 4v4 online game: http://soldat.pl/en/
Usually I would just play in random matches to blow out a bit of steam after work, however sometimes you came across people with clan tags who clearly took it all very seriously (tags like [PLUR]3_points, [PLUR]j0llyR4nch3r, that kind of thing)
If someone pissed me off or if I was getting bored I would sometimes go to the lobby, add my target's clan tag to my profile and change my name to something very similar to theirs.
Once my disguise was in place I would log on to the 'serious' clan-match servers and (after a couple of normal rounds to keep up appearances) I would begin to TK members of my own team in increasingly extravagant ways.
Sometimes a single grenade at the start of a match blowing up everyone, sometimes picking off the entire team by sniper just when they were about to win. There was no automatic boot for team kills and the other team would always skew the votes to keep me on the server. I could just about keep up the 'sorry it was a mistake' veneer for a few rounds before going full Columbine and getting booted.
Man I had way too much time on my hands.
You may have heard of a side-scrolling arcade shooter called Soldat (http://soldat.pl/en/). It's heyday was from about 2002-2007 and I had started playing just about from the very beginning when version 1.0.5b was released.
My claim to fame is that I was most likely in the top 10-20 or so players in the world during the time that I played it seriously. It's hard to know for sure since there's no way of officially ranking players but I can make a decent guess.
I exclusively used the Ruger and moved extraordinarily fast (if you jump correctly off hills, roll properly, etc. you can move extremely fast compared to people without those skills). I had long passed the point where playing in public servers was fun as I would regularly have 30 kills and 0 to 3 deaths.
The players in the top clans would generally only play in private servers against each other. If I remember correctly the most popular ones were run by a guy who went by Flieslikeabrick. I also had a fairly extensive page on the Soldat community wiki but it looks like that wiki has lost a lot of its content in a migration.
So that's my greatest gaming accomplishment and it happened in a free to play game that peaked at maybe 10,000 active players?
I'm sure this will get buried, but Soldat.
Check out the website. The first blurb from Gamespot actually reads "One of the most addictive and fast-paced online multiplayer experiences ever created"
Soldat, http://soldat.pl/en/
It's an old 2D shooter that I played a ton when I was a kid. You run around as a small soldier with jet boots and grenades with 10 primary weapons and 4 secondaries to choose from. You can also throw your weapon after you killed someone and pick up theirs. That means you can have 2 primary weapons if you want.
It's a very small game and takes basicly no time to install and it has quite a few options to it and it's also FREE.
There was a Chinese kid in Canada somewhere who tormented me in Soldat under the name of Mr. Saw. For a while it seemed like anything I did, he aimed to do better and made sure I was aware. It was a friendly rivalry which I enjoyed very much, enough to contemplate sending him an Xbox 360 at the time so that we could continue the rivalry post-Soldat. Unfortunately, he was 16 or so, and I didn't bother since I thought that'd be viewed as awkward given that I was one of the older people in the Soldat community by a good margin and being a stranger and all.
Because another /new/ thread made me think of it - don't forget Indie games. http://kag2d.com (cross-platform) , http://soldat.pl (windows only)
edit: oh, these aren't scary. but still fun for future reference
