Just by the way, TouchMousePointer can do this, but it feels buggy to me on my SP4. I'd like a more simple solution.
I don't need any of the other features - only transparency... like the lock screen.
edit: if you download the "Tablet Pro installer" it works much better than the older versions. I had an older version when i tested it. Transparency works well, and TouchZoom is handy.
Here's a picture of it in action.
I'm going to settle with this. I can finally see behind the keyboard when im typing.
All the other Bay Trail processors on the market are essentially the same sans the Lenovo Thinkpad 8 which has a slightly higher clocked CPU. You can't go wrong with the Dell especially if you don't need the stylus. If all you need the stylus is for light note taking, the dell should do perfectly fine otherwise the Note Tab 8 may be more appropriate if you are heavy into drawing.
I had the Dell and I was perfectly fine with it until I ended up upgrading to the SP2. Again, you can get by without the stylus all together. I suggest downloading TouchMousePointer, when activated it transforms your entire screen into a giant touchpad making navigating in Desktop mode a whole lot easier.

For chrome download touch mouse pointer.. it turns your screen into a touch pad. http://www.lovesummertrue.com/touchmousepointer/en-us/index.html change the settings to full screen mode, then its awesome.
Linx 7 is turning out to be a cheaper option than what I had in mind, so I might actually get that instead. Thanks :)
As for the clicking issue, I've seen others mention TouchMousePointer as a solution. Have you tried it?
This program will turn your entire screen (or a portion of it) into a virtual trackpad. It should get the job done, more or less. Very useful for touch-only Win 8.1 tablets.

Might want to look at Touch Mouse Pointer. It adds an icon to your taskbar that lets you enable a virtual mouse on your screen and it uses your touch screen as a track pad. Very useful in situations like this. I use it on my Acer W3 and it works pretty good.
I can promise you'll love it if that's what you're using it for! For the price and its capabilities compared to something that runs a much higher price (Wacom Cintiq) it's just crazy, and you feel like a bit of a badass when you rip off the keyboard and carry on sculpting.
(When you get it I highly recommend RadialMenu for setting up softkeys on the screen, TouchMousePointer for using the screen as a trackpad (you'll understand this one more and why you'd want it once you get your Surface) and LazyNezumi for adjustable pen smoothing profiles; these aren't necessary but the N-trig digitiser in the Surface can sometimes jitter when you're doing slow strokes, it's nothing drastic but for something like sculpting or inking having the option there is nice.)
I was thinking the fact that it's a windows tablet might help, as there might exist a driver that lets your touchscreen act like a mouse.
Sadly, this thread (http://www.eightforums.com/tablet-touch/38864-emulating-mouse-touch.html ) seems to indicate there is no exact solution, BUT it does contain a link to this thing: http://www.lovesummertrue.com/touchmousepointer/en-us/index.html
which might solve your friend's problem to a large degree (especially when it's run in fullscreen mode).
Hope it helps, tell your friend to take care
I installed the trial version and found it to be buggy. The mouse bounces back and forth between where you touch and where the pointer appears to be.
Here's a free, donationware app that has far more customizability -- TouchMousePointer.
(You can set 0-100% transparent floating window to make it more like appymouse. The window is also resizable and moveable.)
This is a pretty cool app I just found that basically turns your whole screen into a track pad. Very similar the interaction on the Team Viewer app for Android.

There is no formal equivalent. It's a significant concern with modern UX.
But I can recommend an app called TouchMousePointer. It adds a button to your taskbar that toggles a track pad mode that gives you a mouse cursor.

Have you tried using TouchMousePointer?
I started using it for situations where I needed to position the cursor accurately, now I have it enabled 90% of the time. I find fullscreen mode to be the best.
BTW, have you tried using TouchMousePointer? It really does help navigating the Desktop without a stylus. It essentially makes your whole screen into one giant trackpad. I do recommend playing around with the settings. I found that the default settings left a little to be desired but once I changed it to my liking, I realized that I really have no need for a stylus.
If you do end up getting the Dell Venue 8 Pro, be sure to install TouchMousePointer. This program is a godsend for these types of devices and desktop mode. The program lets you use the screen as a giant trackpad when you need mouse capabilities without actually needing a real trackpad. So far, I've been perfectly fine without a keyboard. When on the go, it doesn't bother me that I have to use the onscreen keyboard especially when paired with the program I mentioned above.
