It's your trophy rank. Check this image for what position you need for each rank. You can get these trophies from playing live matches (not ranked though), earning medals in seasonal campaign and playing TOTD and COTD.
You can check your rank either by clicking your name on the top left in main menu or by going to https://trackmania.io.
First of all, do you have Starter (free), Standard or Club Access?
You can find a detailed comparison of what you can do with which access here.
If you have Standard or Club access you don't even need to download the ghosts anymore, but can activate them ingame directly (Settings > "Interface" > "Always display records" and then open those by clicking on the clock symbol on the left side of the screen in the middle. Activate a ghost by clicking on the eye symbol) while playing in Solo mode. For Live you need Club to do the same.
For the free version (Starter Access): I honestly don't know if playing against a downloaded replay is possible, or if you need Standard or even Club there too.
Anyway, if you plan on buying it: Apparently it is advised to do so via Ubisoft, not Epic, that seems to have a lot of issues for a lot of players.
As per this update on the ranked 3v3s by NADEO, posted 31st of August 2021:

This explains trophies on cotd.
You also get a trophy 5 (middle silver one) for placing between 101-1000 on track of the day, and a trophy 4 (lowest silver one) for I think 1000-10000. Author medals on the first 3 track packs gain 1 trophy 4 each, and on red and black you get a trophy 5 (which u already got). For trophy 6 you need to place inside top 10000 on the campaign at the end (which u are rn), get top 100 on totd or be really good I cotd (see link).
That's literally it. Playing normal live arcade lobbys don't help with getting trophies, cotd, totd and campaign's the way

First off, it's completely normal to not be able to understand the membership levels and pricing. This blog post (even if written before the game's release) provides the quick summary. Full spreadsheet of features is here.
As mentioned, you open the game and there's several racing options. A typical game would be much more up-front about its racing modes. In Trackmania, "what you're meant to do" (in practice) is click around and explore the different racing options, find the tracks and game modes you enjoy the most, and play them better and better. Also there's map building. Hopefully this helps!

Add 2-4 fighting games like SFV, Tekken, SSB family :)
Cards games : HS, Magic (already in Open Beta i think), Gwent.
Rocket League and FIFA.
Moba : LoL, Dota2, HoTS.
Maybe one sim racing game ?

Try to avoid "violent" games (aka Mortal Kombat or FPS sadly). School and parents are a little cold about them :D
They are called trophies and they are a game wide ranking system. There are 9 different trophies (3 tiers of bronze, silver and gold) and they are worth points on a logarithmic scale (1 point for the lowest bronze trophy all the way up to 100.000.000 points for the tier 9 which is reserved for the campaign winner and biggest competitions). A list of notable features available in the free version would be a great addition to the FAQ. Could also include a link to Nadeo's list of features comparing the versions. There could also be a list of which paid features has workarounds to use in the free version.

Trackmania is great for this, it has a replay editor and a track editor. There's a billion releases, the most recent one is just Trackmania. https://www.trackmania.com/
You can play it free, but for some reason Ubisoft decided this is a subscription only game. You can't buy it outright, you can only subscribe for a certain amount of time. The last Trackmania you could buy is Trackmania Turbo, which has a track editor and replay editor as well. However the one people like the most is Trackmania 2, which has its own bizarreness with releasing each environment as an expansion pack, but they don't call them expansion packs.
Oh really? I didn't realize that. So if someone doesn't play for a year, they'll come back to an account with 0 points and bronze 1 rank?
The original post about the ranking system says "Progression is constant; every trophy you win is acquired and cannot be lost" but maybe they changed that later?

I use Trackmania exactly for relaxing. Tracks are short and whole game is little insane!
Newest Trackmania is free, but it gets much better when you pay 10$ to get access for huge pool of user made maps. Regular multiplayer is relaxing since you can't collide with others and latency isn't an issue, you just play with others and see how you place. If you want little competition then ranked 3-vs-3 multiplayer matches are way to go. IMO those are much better since you can't just restart the level, just get try to get in the finish and its possible your team wins.
Trackmania. Probably the wackiest and most fun racing game, which has gravity-defining physics compared to other racing games like Need For Speed. It is also competitive and more or less 'Finish as fast as you can'.
On the new TM or Maniaplanet/TMF ?
On the older ones, you get lps from any standard server up to 50/60K depending on the server, after there is some 20-70k, 40-80k, 60-90k servers to have more than 50/60k lp.

More points, that is. Here Nadeo says that every trophy is worth 10x more points as the last one so the silber trophy i have 7 of should give me 70K points, right??
Hello, the maps themself dont give you points. You esrn points for a set of maps compared to your current score. Details
Also it might take up to 15 minutes until points and times are updated.
