I'm not 100% sure honestly. It seems like reddit's best attempt at de-anonymizing the visitors of questionable subreddits. I guess they wanted to introduce 'accountability' so if someone posts something illegal they can have some form of identification. However nowadays with throwaway email accounts at our disposal it seems like a moot point to me; it's not too difficult to circumvent measures like this.
Use trashmail.com

Generate an email that will auto-forward five or ten messages to your real email or last 1 day, then deactivate automatically.

Great for all kinds of things.
if you're not already using it, TrashMail.com is perfect for this. It let's you create a fake email that forwards to your real email, then it self deletes itself at a later date!
True, I forgot about ProtonMail. I have tried them, but again my preference was with trashmail.com. BTW, this "trick" with the + sign works for many services, including gmail, but as mentioned, they can still ID you. And that does not happen with trashmail nor with Throttle (uncertain on fastmail)...
>So spam is one of those "you can't have your cake and eat it too" things.
Definitely true, although there are other ways to fight that and I'd say actually better ways. With Posteo I have 3 Mail adresses that end up in one single inbox. I use the firstnamelastname-adress only for people I know so there is no or little possibility that it ends up receiving spam. The second one could be used for accounts on sites and the third could be a spam adress. You can delete and change the aliases at any time, free of charge and add aliases for 0,10€ a month.
I think taking care and separating your email adresses is the best way to fight spam, something like Trashmail.com is very good to do that.
As I said, I've used them for one year and haven't gotten any spam.
