I'm not sure what the question is... Windows indexing is slow there are better alternatives out there for file searching such as the fantastically free UltraSearch
I couldn't find anything specifically relating to comparing search speed from and ebook to Windows search however I found an exert from this article which might help explain why it's so slow
>If using a local search tool that does pre-build content indexes, those indexes will usually live on your slower-than-RAM hard-disk, and could easily be larger than all the RAM available on your machine – so every search will still involve a scan over disk data, which is relatively slow, rather than nearly-instant in-RAM lookups.
Hope this helps!
I don't know of any, but the first paragraph on this tool's page seems to indicate it may operate the way you want:
http://www.jam-software.com/ultrasearch/ > UltraSearch does not maintain an index which is stored on your harddisk, but achieves its speed by working directly on the Master File Table (MFT) of the NTFS partitions. UltraSearch even identifies NTFS hardlinks.
Heck, the second result in my quick search is a Beta News article talking about that tool/feature:

If you do end up trying it, I'd be interested to know what you think of it (or, if you've already tried/discounted it, why).
