> But in this situation is it any more likely to be available through acoustic id?
AcID uses sound fingerprinting. I didn't yet try it but the algorithm sounds like it can do this kind of thing, even if no one uploaded this exact file yet.
P.S. About opus and m4a, looks like Full Scan in Media Library settings could be useful: see #774
I prefer to download music and make my own play list on Android.
I use Vanilla Music Player, it is very minimal and Open Source. I disabled the default Google Play Music!
Steps remaining to reach this functionality:
Tag editor and lyrics plugin should be submitted to F-Droid/Google Play.
3a. Through Google Play Developer Console
3b. Through F-Droid submission queue or via merge-request to fdroiddata
Did not have this bug yet!

You can always open an issue here. Also could you maybe upload a mp3 that doesn't work for you, so I can try it out?
This does not sound right. A known issue among the developers is that write access using the Storage Access Framework (SAF) is not implemented in Vanilla Music. But the known behavior is that just the deletion fails, leaving the database entry untouched and the song playable.
SAF is a fancy pantsy interface for app storage access that, from the users perspective, mostly stands out by theoretically allowing for custom directory access rules for any given app. At least that's what i know, could have more benefits.
SAF was first introduced in Android KitKat (4.4) and since then, devices started shipping that only allowed SDCard Write Access through SAF or by System Applications. Since Vanilla Music has not implemented SAF support and since there seem to be additional hurdles (at least for the tag editor) your ability to delete songs or change tag info of files on any external storage from within Vanilla Music depends on your luck, i've read that some vendors might allow SDCard write access to Vanilla even though and some don't.
Just tried and can confirm Vanilla Music supports OPUS, but you may need to tick "Scan full filesystem (slower)" in order for OPUS files to get indexed in the library (source).
> And one open source app I stopped using is Phonograph music player. It was beautiful, free and open source. This way it boosted a million downloads and 4.5 rating. The devloper left the project years ago and it was regularly been developed by community.... And one day I wake up, and most of the features are behind an IAP!
I use and like Phonograph, but I compile it fresh from source every few weeks. I had no idea that this happened. Moving to open source—and making a big announcement on /r/android and XDA about it—seems to be a popular marketing strategy at best, and a malicious bait and switch at worst. For what it's worth, I had a heated argument about the open source development strategy of Shuttle with its main developer as well. You won't find any trace of it because he deleted most of my critical comments on the GitHub issue.
If you want a "real" open source music player that doesn't just check the bare minimum box, try Vanilla. There is even a hall of shame in their repo where they list projects that have ripped them off.
Thanks for the link.
I look forward to seeing what happens with the mediadb.

I'm in the middle of a big re-tagging effort with Musicbrainz Picard and it's Musicbrainz Picard that is wanting the change the apostrophe. I've been putting in the little extra effort to delete the apostrophes and type them in to make sure it is the correct character, so, theoretically, I won't be seeing this anymore by the time the new DB is ready for public consumption.
Hey /u/Piscivm, thanks for your suggestion, and sorry for the late reply, I've been quite busy.
I agree that the link to this subreddit could be more descriptive.
I just changed it to "Community & support: /r/VanillaMusic". (ebcc88f)
