It could be the WoW is loading textures in those larger areas for whatever reason like because its programmed that way, or your gfx card doesnt have enough video memory.
Since you're still using spinning disks I suggest making sure they're defragged. Windows usually handles this in the background these days but it doesn't hurt to check. Just type "defrag" in the windows search bar and the windows defragger should show up.
