Besides some already mentioned, I use NextApp's FX File explorer.
I see a lot of love for Solid Explorer, which is a nice looking app, but it seems too simple for my use; perhaps I'm missing something and someone can clue me in while I have a trial of the latest version.
I'm not interested in good looks over functionality. My main use is to quickly transfer files, usually from either my desktop, or the cloud.
For example, say I want to transfer some music albums from my desktop to my phone. With FX, from the front page, I can select my desktop Music folder with a couple of clicks, enter a password, and copy a folder to the clipboard. Then, another couple of clicks and I select my phone's music folder, then press clipboard icon and paste. From there, I can instantly switch back and forth between these two devices to copy more. I can add more devices to the list to copy from or to more than just these two devices.
With Solid Explorer, it seems to take a lot more work for each copy. I navigated to my desktop, copied a remote folder, but then I couldn't immediately get back without a lot of clicking. It seems like there must be an easier way.
FX File Explorer Plus addon is on sale for $1.99 now.
It's so much better than ES. My home screen has shortcuts right at the top for Local, LAN, and Cloud locations via dropdown menus. You can open multiple windows and quickly switch between them for transferring lots of files from one location to another repeatedly. Also has file sharing between two devices running FX, or a web server where you can drag files from a desktop system to your phone.
> why would you pay for Solid Explorer when FX is free?
The FX Plus add-on isn't free.

I bought both Solid Explorer and File Explorer. They are both good, which is more than can be said for ES.
I use Fx File Explorer with android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx.rk&gl=US with the network add on that lets you SCP file transfer to an SSH server. But there must be a zillion ways to get android stuff to a computer.
If you have FX File Explorer with a license key, you could browse your phone files on your browser if you're under same the network.

FX File Explorer: A file explorer app. It can also browse your cloud drives (google drive, onedrive, whatever), your SMB shares, and it can mount SSHFS. There are other features too. I'm not the biggest fan of the UI, but all the features are there and they work very well.
Solid Explorer: A file explorer with better UI and fewer features. The only time I use it these days is when I'm trying to extract weird archives. Sometimes FX just can't do it.
JuiceSSH: This app is a terminal app that SSH'es into servers. It is not a local shell. However, as an SSH client, I think its the best.
MyBoy GBA emulator. I gave up on android games, but its easy to emulate a game-boy advance and get really, really good games from the late 90s and early 00s.
Kingdom Rush Frontiers and Origins. I got them in a humble bundle, and I easily put 30 hours into each. They are a lot of fun. I can't vouc for Veangence and I don't really enjoy the base game that is free with IAPs, but that's mostly because I'm so picky about the profit model. They are good games, I'm sure.
FB Reader Premium. If you don't host a caliber library, this is the app you want to use to read ebooks. Shout out to Moon+ for being a really good runner up. If you have a caliber library... I'm not sure what the best option is. I'd probably try the plugin for FBreader first.
FX Pro is on sale now too for $1.99

You can use FTP in FX but I think you have to pay for the plus add-on. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx.rk
Yes, only if you change the file name for each icon pack after you save the to you're device. I use a file manager called FX Files.
