Found this....
Ok so here's what I do in order to save the icon packs that I've created using Icon Pack Studio. You'll need to use a file manager app (I like FX files) and an app called ThemeX. I'll put the links for each at the bottom. Once I've downloaded the icon pack that I want to save I'll open up ThemeX, locate the icon pack I want and then save it. Then I go into my file manager and look for "THEMEX", after I've found the file that I just saved I'll rename it. It's very important that you rename that file before you try to download the next icon pack, because they'll just keep copying right over the last one each time instead of making a new file folder with every new download. So once I've downloaded, saved using ThemeX and renamed the files I'm now ready to transfer my icon packs to a safe place (like Drive, Dropbox a computer, etc). At this point you'll be ready to complete your phones reset safely without losing anything. Hopefully this helps you out. It's been the only way I could figure out how to save all my work.

There are various tools that you can use to extract an icon from an icon pack (Iconzy, Themex, etc) and save it as a PNG. You don't even really need to extract the icon you want to use as a base first; it just makes things quicker and easier IMO.
Then, if your laincher allows editing icons, it is a simple matter to use IPS to apply the icon you saved and make any customizations that IPS allows.
In Nova, the steps are as follows...
Once you've selected the icon of your choice, use IPS in the normal manner to customize the icon.
It's slightly cumbersome at first. But once you've done it a couple of times, it becomes pretty easy to do.

Hi, You can use any APK extractor app from the play store. I use this app, it adds an option to the install pop up dialogue to export or share the APK to your storage. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sk.styk.martin.apkanalyzer
You just need to change the name of each file that you've exported to your device. Then when you upload a new one, it will no longer continue to update the previous file. I use a file manager app called FX File Explorer to help with locating, renaming and organizing the files/folders in my phones storage.

I thought about the same thing as I wanted to be able to securly save my work somewhere else besides the app itself as well. What I came up with is an app called ThemeX. After I installed the icon pack that I made using Icon Pack Studio onto my phone I'll open up ThemeX. Then I'll find the icon pack that I want, open it up and then save it. Then I go into my file manager and look up the ThemeX folder, then find the folder of the icon pack I just saved, rename the icon pack and save it in Drive/Dropbox etc. Hope this helps. (◦‿◦)

There is a workaround to this: Simple way would be to search for a transparent PNG online and use that.
Or if you want to use icons from your installed packs...
Using iconzy. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arun.kustomiconpack
•Search for the icon you want (e.g.tasks), this will display all icons from your installed icon packs with that name. •When you find the icon you like, press the + button to add to your collection. •In your collection, long press the icon & choose "share" from the pop up menu, save to an easy to find location •Rename the exported file & add ext ".png" •You can then use that png in IPS when single editing, just choose "from file" in the design option.
Might sound a bit long winded but it takes less than a minute.
