I changed to adw because of this. I tried to everything to keep Nova in memory without succeeding.
I think the free version of adw has everything that the paid version of Nova has. It's very fast, battery friendly, ram friendly and good looking. Give it a try.

OP already explained, but I'll give it a try also:
The home screen on an Android phone is actually an app. You can download other apps that do the same thing and choose which one to use, just like you can download other browsers or Reddit apps and choose whatever you like best.
The type of app that shows a home screen (and app drawer optionally) is called a Launcher. The one OP uses is called "ADW Launcher 2" and the one I use is called "Nova Launcher". Launchers written by people who are not phone makers usually are a lot more customizable and powerful, but also usually have a paid option.

Its very lite I even use it on my phone from 7 years ago with 220MB of ram with a cpu clocked at 1.00GHz and 2 cores mediatek and still performs perfectly.
It goes to android 2.3 and up
I like ADW Launcher because when you click on an app to edit the icon, you can preview all available icons across all your icon packs you have, in the same screen.

Includes gestures in free version, but be aware that certain customization options for icons and miscellaneous styles are paywalled. Tried it during the big update announcement but I still prefer Nova personally. You'll note the difference mainly in customization design.
Also if you're on Marshmallow that slow drawer is just a thing that happens to third party launchers. It's an android bug.
Edit: Adw upgrade appears to be three bucks.
some of the paid apps i found useful.
I prefer ADW.Luncher for my old Android phones running 2.3 (Yes I am using :))
This is the one I've been using forever https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.adw.launcher https://imgur.com/a/qsfhEBW

FORM Clock Widget - One of my fave widgets ever, it changes colors to match your wallpaper.
Vivid Navigation Bars for Substratum
Icons made by me based on Compacticons, day of the week widget made by me in Zooper Pro.
I hope this is acceptable quality, I tried all kinds of different screen recorders, this is the best quality I could get.
Spatial Glass Liberated Icons - Loving these icons right now! There aren't that many of them but I <3 them.

The neon city widget is with XWidget Pro
Then the solar system is with Zooper Widget Pro and this template, I have no idea if it actually works.
Then the navigation bar is part of a Samsung theme by Minwoo Bae/Minu called Figure Skating, but I don't know how to link to that as it's in the Samsung theme shop.
Whew! I hope that's everything.

I'd also love to hear suggestions for a sleeker, light music player with a good shuffle feature. I'm currently using Pulsar but I'm not a huge fan of the way it looks.
