Not helpful for you exactly but in NZ there was an app I used called Campermate which listed a load of places where you can sleep in your car with reviews from others who have stayed there.
Does anyone know if something similar is available for the US?
Make sure you have this installed on your phone with offline maps when you get there.
Download Campermate and see what camping sites there are. I like the DOC ones, they're very basic but usually scenic and only $5
I really couldn't pin a single one. Every day was just amazing. The nature is beautiful and there is a lot to see. I think the most memorable one was hiking on Waiheke Island, but that may be just because it was our first destination outside of Auckland and before getting the motorhome.
A guy I met at a work event told me that the glowworm caverns were the best thing he experienced in NZ. Basically described it as a life-altering experience. We didn't go because my gf is afraid of caves and ironically I caved in. TBF I was kind of expecting it to be a lame tourist cash grab. Well, next time.
I stayed for four weeks with my girlfriend, we rented a motorhome and drove from Auckland across both islands and took the flight back in Christchurch. We did stay in Sydney for three more days before returning to Germany. I've spoken to a handful of people who also visited NZ as European tourists and I reflected a lot on the choices and expenses and I think we did most things exactly right. The things you should be aware of especially when doing both islands (at the drop of a hat):
Have you got campermate? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nz.co.campermate&hl=en
Used it a few years ago in NZ and we were able to pretty much plan our entire year using it.
