Almost exact Cow evolution clone.
But as this one is faster, web-based (platform independent), there are no fullscreen popup advertisements every time you open the settings/shop page and graphics is pretty cute, I guess this one is actually better than the original game.
It would be nice if you mentioned Cow evolution developers in credits though.
Me and my friends have returned to Cow Evolution which we used to play years ago in school. There has been quite a few changes and were all racing for the highest number of recreations.
>...but it's in no way an incremental game. It's a Tower Defense game.
I know this is months late and basically completely pointless too, but I have to strongly disagree with your concluding statement. I was basically in agreement to the first paragraph you have, in essence Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows is a tower defensive game first. It's just that last statement saying basically it's only a tower defense game and in no way an incremental game I can't agree with.
I know at first it feels like a tower defense game but the endgame content shares too many similarities with incremental games to just consider it a tower defense game only.
End game can have modes that last several hours. Playing through one stage can feel and earning your rewards at the end is very similar to doing a run and then a prestige in an incremental game. Both can take a few hours, both give you rewards, and both make you stronger when completed.
As well, the core endgame gameplay is very similar to an incremental game, with enemy health and towers growing in an exponential fashion similar to incremental games. Large health and damage numbers become involved as well, there are different builds to use (similar to incremental games like Realm Grinder, Must-a--Mine, Crusaders of the Lost Idols, and the generic idle build versus. clicker build Heroes). Also, playing endurance mode, with the right build, can allow the player to "idle" through quite a few waves. It may not be the exact type of idling in an incremental, but it's very close.
Further, there are even incremental games that incorporate almost the same mechanics as Gemcraft Chasing Shadows. Cow Evolution has the player combining cows better cows, much like combining gems. The Perfect Tower, has the player upgrading a tower that shoots at incoming enemies, the upgrades feel like the upgrading strength of gems increasing attack speed and adding bonuses like freeze, shock, etc.
The OP said the game was pretty incremental, not a full incremental, but too just write it off as a "tower defense" only, is off. Even the definition given by this sub-reddit itself fits Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows
>This subreddit is for us lovers of games that feature an incremental mechanism, such as unlocking progressively more powerful upgrades, or discovering new ways to play the game.
Notice it says an incremental element, not necessarily the full game. Unlocking progressively more powerful upgrades, that definitely happens in Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows, gems combine to become stronger, shadow cores can be spent, and talismans with talisman fragments and upgrades.
maybe it's one of the many evolution games from Tapps Games, like this:

Only thing that springs to mind is cow evolution. This might be a newer iteration though.
