Microphone + camera that transmits to the parent device. when the child hits a certain noise threshold the parent phone plays a noise and then starts feeding the audio, other than that it keeps the audio off (unless you want it to act more like a normal baby monitor). its a lot easier to hide a phone with its screen off plugged into its charger than leaving a laptop in your childs room.
I bought this app when it first came out for $10 when i had my daughter and fell in love with it. android phones are rapidly becoming what the raspberry pi was envisioned with the uses for them growing every year.
Dormi monitor is the best. Reliable and easy to use. Picks up sounds very accurately and opens mic/speaker. Free to use, there are some extra time or so that you can pay for but we never managed to consume all the free to use time in a month.

I use Dormi for Android. It's an app that gives you 4 free hours a month, with a very reasonable lifetime subscription for unlimited time (pretty sure it's less than $10). Perfect if you have an old Android phone lying around. One phone acts as the child device and you can have several parent devices that are activated if noise is detected. I also use it when we're out of the house. I'll set either my phone or the wife's as the child device, and use the other as the parent. This is a cheap solution and very convenient.

My kids are 5 and 2 now. I thought the owlet sock was way more hassle than it was worth.
A cheap IP cam blows all the dedicated video monitors out of the water for both features and price. Wyze cams (v2) worked well for me - priceless for checking on a napping baby without risking disturbing them.
Dormi is an app that runs on an old android phone (left in the nursery) that can send a push notification to your (android) phone if the nursery gets loud (like a baby wakes up and cries). Absolutely fantastic for doing yard work during naptime.
Later on, an "ok-to-wake" clock that glows red (or whatever) during sleep time and turns green (or whatever) when it's ok to wake up and leave the room saved our sanity. We use the Hatch Baby Rest- I think they have an updated version out now, and there are other things out there that do similar things.
Congratulations!
If you have an old android phone hanging around you could try this app - Dormi I used it for a while a few years ago. You can set up a phone (just on wifi) as the camera and have yours as the receiver. From memory you may be able to have me than one recovery going at once but not sure. Did the job for us.
We used Dormi with an ancient android tablet and it was great. Connects to your phone and is very reliable when there's noise.

That looks pretty nice too, thanks. Link for those curious: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sleekbit.dormi&hl=en
We use this in both our kids rooms; one is a nexus5 and the other is an LG 8 tablet.
Monitor: Dormi https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sleekbit.dormi&hl=en
White Noise: White Noise Baby https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tmsoft.whitenoise.baby
Then I have teamviewer on each device and mine, so I can control them from afar. I can turn the white noise up/down, turn it on when grandma is watching the kids and can't figure it out, etc. I can also use it to kick off youtube or DLNA on a TV via chromecast when someone else is watching them:

Unclear if Android-only would work for you, but if so, I recommend Dormi.
Have you tried Dormi? You just need an old smartphone playing as a "child" device and you are set.
